If I remember right, Knievel also didn't give himself 10,000-ton mounds of dirt, correctly shaped to his ballistic trajectory, to land on. Didn't EK try to land on wooden or metal ramps pretty much like the ones he launched from? Seems like I remember watching EK bounce off his bikes *after* making initially successful landings.
Now it makes sense: the wooden ramps might not have had enough mass to absorb the impact of the bike landing at whatever ungodly airborne speed... so the impact first went down and then right back up, sending EK flying again... straight into the ER.
Using the dirt ramps makes a whole lot of sense. Still an amazing jump.
