I'm going with Bobby Abreu in this one, may be a darkhose with Ortiz and Teixeira involved, but I have Bobby winning it.

Mind boggling that Albert Pujols wanted to participate and MLB tells him no. I'm so glad we're going to get to see Hee Sop Choi and Jason Bay instead.

Ouch, maybe the nerves of his first ever Derby kicked in.

It happens, I remember the derby back in 1998(I think it was) when Gary Sheffield knocked a total of 0 HR's that year, including one that he entirely missed.

Did I mention that Albert Pujols volunteered to participate?

Did I mention that Albert Pujols volunteered to participate?

Why on earth would MLB allow one of the best hitters in baseball to put on a show for the fans?

I mean come on, they're already giving us what we really want by awarding home field advantage in the World Series to the league that wins a meaningless exhibition game. Uhh

To be fair Hee Sop does have the power to be in here, but he needs to put it all together first.

Geez, it's gonna sound silly now, but I would have picked Abreu to win it. It's easy to pick a guy AFTER he hit 24 homers in the first round and obliterated the record, but Bobby is my favorite hitter in all of Baseball.
Just because he hit 24 in the 1st round doesn't mean he will win it. He still has to perform in the next couple rounds and he starts at 0, not 24.

Bobby has one of the sweetest swings I've ever seen. He never overswings. He is so consistent. He is more of a line drive hitter then anything else. I would have picked him because I think he has a more consistent swing then anyone else in the Derby.
That said, I hope Bobby stays within himself and doesn't think that he is all of a sudden a homerun hitter.

Congrats Bobby. It's about time you become a household name!

God bless Hee Sop and Jason Bay, but neither of those guys have accomplished much of anything in the Bigs yet. I just have to laugh, you have the NBA, where they have to beg guys to participate in the dunk contest, and every year they wind up with a couple guys that are virtual unknowns to casual fans. MLB has the best player in the league eager to participate in their exhibition and they stiff him.

He was my first round pick on several roto teams this year. True five category superstud.

They wanted eight guys from eight different countries. David Ortiz better whale ass because he's keeping Albert and Vlad on the pine.

Believe it or not, Ichiro nearly represented Japan. Instead we got Hee Sop-Mania from South Korea. Not sure why Hideki Matsui got stiffed, maybe because he stopped hitting homers this year.

Wow, it's tough to chose between Ortiz, Albert and Vlad. Maybe they offered all 3 a spot and Big Poppy was the first to reply?

How are they gonna decide the USA's homerun derby contestant when we have a handful of sluggers again? Remember it wasn't that long ago when you had names like Griffey, McGwire and Bonds all in the same derby. Imagine making that decision?

I mean come on, they're already giving us what we really want by awarding home field advantage in the World Series to the league that wins a meaningless exhibition game. Uhh

The whole idea of an All-Star Game, for all the sports, is a huge Catch-22 it seems. The problem is, if they just play and screw around, people whine that they're not really competing, playing hard, etc. (See: NBA All-Star Game)

Now that baseball has tried to fix this, people complain that they're letting an exhibition game possibly determine who wins the World Series, especially if it goes to 7 games.

And then there's the NFL sham that is the Pro Bowl, which nobody even remotely cares about, period, because it's after the season is over.

I think both sides have legitimate beef. On the one hand, you kinda want to see these guys go hard on these dream teams of stars. On another hand, you don't want your guy to get hurt playing here. You also don't want your team to get screwed at the end of the year because of what happens in a meaningless game.

I don't think there will ever be an All-Star solution that will make everybody happy. For me personally, I only casually watch baseball in October, and tonight for that matter. So I don't really care what they do with it, because I'm not even rooting for anybody. But I can see both sides of the issue, and it plagues all the major sports.

Off the subject but I was just offered Oliver Perez for a guy that I was high on in Erik Bedard. I did accept it but I still can change my mind. Any thoughts on Perez returning to last years form? This break could do him some good. Also Bedard has yet to pitch deep into a season because he is so young. Its head to head action and neither guy would be a starter right now but Perez seems to have better upside this year. Thoughts?????
