Nationals to trade for Rockies OF Wilson
Posted: July 8, 2005
The Rockies have agreed to trade outfielder Preston Wilson to the Nationals for righthanded pitcher Zach Day and Class AAA outfielder J.J. Davis, the Sporting News has learned.
Before the deal can be completed, the two clubs must agree on how much the Nationals will pay on what remains of Wilson's $12.5 million salary. Also, Wilson must OK the deal because the Nationals are one of five teams to which he can reject a trade.
The Cubs, thought to be the frontrunner for Wilson, could re-enter the picture if the Nationals and Rockies can't work out the particulars.
The Cubs called up Class AA outfielders Adam Greenberg and Matt Murton Thursday after they sent Corey Patterson and Jason Dubois to Class AAA Iowa.

Don't know those players from Wash. Would be nice if they could contribute in the next year or so.
Guess between the Rocks and the Broncs I should have invested in a moving company that sepcializes in the route from Denver to Washington.

I'd say that depends on how much of the salary got dumped. I like the potential of a young outfield.

I grew up a Mets fan but I have really enjoyed the 5 or 6 Rockies games I have been to. Great park and great bar atmosphere around the park. But how long do you think the city will support a team that is this bad and has been for so long? If they keep bringing up the bottom every year will the fans keep showing up?

Day is a soft throwing righthander. Nothing more than a guy who can fill out the back of a rotation, but he fell deep into the doghouse in Washington. If JJ Davis isn't much of anything, than that means the Nats were simply the team that was willing to absorb the largest portion of Mookie Jr's contract.

That said they have actually been to a World Series and been a competitive a few times in there history so the fan base has a little something to hang their hats....Unlike the Rocks they have never sniffed respectibility in any season yet.

The fans have been showing up for years now despite the lack of direction or commitment from ownership. They're still drawing about 20,000 per game even though they're one of the worst teams in all of baseball with little to no relief in sight.
The only way I can see a serious fan backlash is if they get out from under the dead money from Walker, Hampton & Neagle and still refuse to spend money to improve the team.

They sure shot their foot off with that Hampton deal...Paid him a lot of money to pitch poorly for the Rocks and now pay him a lot of money to pitch well for the Braves.

How long as KC been a team compared to the Rockies? I don't really care for either team but give Colorado more then 10 or so years before you pull the plug, hell it took Boston 100 years to win the WS again and fans still went to see them lose.

I'm sure it will happen sometime. Still a newer team, it started from the ground up didn't it? Then I would think it would take some time to get the farm system in place, and all that other jazz. That said picking a junior in HS when he couldn't be drafted in the third round isn't going to help the team get better anytime soon.

Well the Marlins bought the first ring, but they did earn the second ring. But I agree with you on it. They have found better young talented pitchers then most teams in the MLB. I don't think that will ever happen to the Rockies. They could get RJ, The Rocket, Curt, Santana, and Halladay as the 5 starters and Lidge and Gagne in the pen and still have a 9.00 era.

Absolutely wrong. Thanks to WGN, Colorado was a Chicago Cub town. -- Therefore we were already used to futility.
And Nappy, the answer is, the season ticket base is already below half what it was just a couple years ago. The fans know the only way to tell the owners they've done a crappy job is to keep the money in their own wallets.
This is a tough season. At first I was one of the nay-sayers, and now I am coming around to believe if they are going to be successful they are going to have develop the talent. The kids are doing about as expected, but getting better. Who knows? Get rid of the money they are still paying to guys playing anywhere but Coors and they might become respectable again.

The Roockies need to do what the Phillies need to do. Get rid of the first 10 rows in the outfield and push the wall back about 40 feet.
You have to be nuts to be a pitcher willing to pitch in these bandboxes. Teams like the Sillies and Rockies are gonna lose year in and year out on big name free agent pitchers.
I don't care what anyone says, pitching wins championships. If you don't have a staff of at least 4 really good pitcher, you have no shot.
You can try to assemble a team of bomb hitters like the Sillies have but when you do that, You load your lineup with strikeouts. That is the Sillies main problem. Too many god damn strikeouts.

The Roockies need to do what the Phillies need to do. Get rid of the first 10 rows in the outfield and push the wall back about 40 feet. That would be disastrous. The outfield in Coors Field is already by far the largest in baseball. It's not the home runs that create all the offense in Colorado, it's all the bloopers that are easy outs in most other parks but singles in Denver. The Ballpark at Arlington, US Cellular Field, Citizens Bank Ballpark, Miller Park, and the Great American Ballpark have all been easier home run parks than Coors Field but the final scores still aren't as high there as in Denver.
Many people think the fences at Coors Field should be moved in, with high walls in left and right-center field. That would create less base runners and hopefully keep the home runs at a similar level, thus lowering scores.
The other big problem is the fact that breaking balls don't break as much at high altitude than at sea level, making it easier for batters to hit the ball.
Tredici was right about the Cubs being the most popular team in Denver before the Rockies. The other two most followed teams were the Cardinals and Braves. The Royals were never big here.
The Rockies were competitive in their early years and the attendance at Mile High and Coors Field was better than any other team in history. Colorado has finished a season over .500 more times in their history than the Marlins (though Florida should tie it after this year). Before last season the Marlins had won the World Series the only two times they finished above .500.

I remember when this was proposed once before and the manager of the Reds said then everybody gets an extra outfielder when they played there. Said it was already the hardest outfield to cover the gaps in.

Looks like Colorado really is getting next to nothing for Wilson. Not that much salary relief, either.
According to the Denver Post, "Money and patience emerged Saturday as primary factors holding up Preston Wilson's trade to the Washington Nationals. The Rockies would receive 27-year-old starting pitcher Zach Day, nearly ready to come off the 15-day disabled list, and marginal prospect J.J. Davis, a Triple-A outfielder. However, the Rockies would have to reach a compromise with Wilson on deferred compensation to prevent him from vetoing the deal. Wilson's representatives planned to have discussions with Rockies financial officers to iron out wrinkles. Colorado is expected to eat $3.3 million of the $5.58 million remaining on Wilson's contract. The veteran center fielder has been open to deferring money to facilitate his exit from the Rockies, but not without interest, which would mean he would lose salary to go to a team on his no-trade list."
If JJ Davis is a marginal prospect, than this was a full blown fire sale because Day is certainly nothing special.

Yes sir. Actually, Brett Myers has pitched lights out save for his last 3 starts. Before his last 3 starts his ERA was under 2. He has gotten very little run support all year thats why his record is hovering around .500. I never look at record though. I look at ERA.
Lidle has actually pitched phenominally this year. He's an aging, journeyman pitcher who has Tommy John in his elbow. Somehow though, through all of that, he has thrown like a really good #2 starting pitcher.
The guy I'm really excited about is Robinson Tejeda. He is the guy replacing Randy Wolf. Tejada has given up 1 or fewer runs in 5 out of his 7 starts. His biggest nemisus is hi cntrol. He tends to walk to many hitters and runs alot of deep counts which means he is at or near 100 pitches by the 6th inning. If he gets his control down, he could be a lock for the rotation.
Padilla is a flat out bumb who needs to be kicked to the curb. He is a mental migit on the mond. One bad thig happens, ie, a home run, a walk, an error, etc, and he falls apart. I'm tired of him.
The Sillies need to trade Leiber to the Yanks or someone looking for a #4 starter. He has okay stuff but he has no future on this team.
Look for these names on the trading block once the boneheads that run the show realize what the fans already know. The season is over.
Billy Wagner, Tim Worrell, Jon Leiber, Ugeth Urbina (if they don't move Wags), Possibly even Lidle.
These guys could be dealt if the Sillies eat alot of their salary which is not likely to happen.
Mike Leibersuck (Leiberthal to the non Philly fan). Make $9 million a year to be a suckass 8 hole hitter
David Bell- The guy is leading the NL in BA with RISP. Likely won't be traded unless we get a 3rd baseman in a deal for Wags or another pitcher
Jim Thome- It's gonna be hard to deal Thome because he has been on the DL twice this year and is hitting about .220 with on 5 or 6 dingers. If the Sillies could trade him to the Red Sox or someone in need of a DH with pop, I would do it for a bag of peanuts to free up some money for next year. Ryan Howard is the real deal and he is the Sillies future and present first baseman.
Here is a name that will pop out at you. There are rumblings around here that Bobby Abreu's name has come up in trade talks. Who knows if they are true but I would love to know what names are being thrown around in return for Abreu. I am dead set against trading Abreu but the Sillies should at least entertain offers.

If they trade Abreu it better be somewhere other then NY. He might be good with the Yankees but I would rather not risk losing my best fantasy player to not being able to live up to the pressure of NY. I shipped Beltran, Bonds, and Eaton away for Matsui, A.Jones, and Morris because Beltran was not living up to the hype in NY.
