Mini-Camp Notebook: Rice Left Catching His Breath

Jerry RiceBy Andrew Mason

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Five practices into his Broncos career, and Jerry Rice is still trying to catch his breath.

"Rod Smith told me yesterday, 'You need to get in some shape,'" Rice said as he departed the field following the Broncos' second mini-camp practice.

Not even 20 seasons of NFL experience could adequately prepare the NFL's all-time leader in receptions, receiving yardage and touchdowns for the challenges posed by practicing at an elevation of over 5,700 feet.

"I'm still trying to get used to this mile-high (air)," Rice said. "But I look at some of the other guys, and they're having a little difficult time, too. So there's hope.

"I don't care what type of work you do down at sea level; once you get here, it's a whole new ballgame."

But Rice noted that Smith wasn't immune from the same challenge to the lungs he faced.

"He was gasping for air, too," Rice said.

WORKING HIS WAY BACK: Jeff Shoate's recovery from offseason surgery on his left knee remains in progress, but the second-year cornerback has managed to participate in individual drills with his fellow cornerbacks.

"It's doing all right," Shoate said. "I still haven't really been able to go in and get reps yet. It's really a day by day thing. Some days it hurts really bad. It's not back 100 percent. There's going to be discomfort."

Shoate's timetable for a return to full speed remains the beginning of training camp, although he's still experiencing pain in the knee.

"There's still some pain in the knee; coming out of breaks isn't always easy," Shoate said. "IT's still difficult to stop and go.

GET OUT OF TOWN: When the Broncos adjourn following mini-camp, some coaches take the opportunity to squeeze in one last period of rest and relaxation before working almost every day for months on end.

So for such tranquility away from the hurly-burly of the NFL, Head Coach Mike Shanahan has a favored destination.

"I go to Tahoe every year and kind of get away for a few days and just kind of mentally prepare (myself)," Shanahan said. "It's a long season and we go about six and a half or seven months -- hopefully -- without a day off. There is that bye week, which does give you a little time to recuperate, but hopefully we don't have a lot of rest at the end of the season. So you have to get mentally ready and mentally sharp and I think our coaches do a good job of that."

Practicing at altitude naturally increases your hemoglobin. This is something that is always an advantage for home-trained athletes and one of the reasons Denver teams can be competitive.

I waited all day for these two weak ass reports? After yesterday's I figured Mason and Co. were finally on to something. 1 day of good reporting...then back to the old.

GARBAGE! Thanks for posting it though... not trying to shoot the messenger!

Ya know, I like Jerry, I appreciate his time in Oakland and have no hard feelings whatsoever him going to you guys or even retiring a Donk, but if I were a Donk fan I would be concerned with the same things that concerned Oakland and that is taking time away from a possible star WR, we found out what Gabriel and Curry could do when the old guys were shuffled out, and I feel he will only take valuable reps from someone that will have to learn the curve sometime.

I've said the same thing and more, over and over. He's not here to help the Broncos win crap. He's here for his own self-serving purpose and taking roster spots. I could go on and on.

I really don't think he will be more than a special situation 3 wr for you guys, he has no speed left, still runs great patterns I am sure but I don't think he should be striking fear in any D's plans to cover him.

Donks will see early that he is done and slide him to the side like we did and the sea chickens did, about the only thing he is gonna do is burn a roster spot and maybe help give a young guy a positive attitude.

I guess that means something

Do you really think he'll beat Watts for the #3 spot, RR? I don't.

This article makes me wonder if he'll even make it through training camp. IMHO, he should have retired after the SB loss to the Bucs... if not back when the 9ers let him go.

I predict under Shanahan Rice will make a play that will win one game for us that is up for grabs at the end of the fourth quarter.

Whily old fox +Shanahan = secret weapon when you least expect it.

You hear so much about the altitude affecting visitors, but I have to say, I can't remember the last time I saw a visiting team really sucking wind in the 4th quarter in Denver.

shanny's secret weapon: at least one WR goes down in every camp, so he's loading up on the law of averages by bringing in some guy who needs a golf cart to get on the field.

Burning up a roster spot?

Shanahan says he has to earn his spot, so if he is on the final roster, then that means none of the "future stars" were able to beat out a 41 year old man.

Be good or be gone, and that included the GOAT.

I agree. I always have stated that Rice will show a good example for the younger kids BUT that he should be cut at the end of Preseason.
