Tim Brown to retire as Raider

By Janie McCauley, AP Sports Writer | July 6, 2005

ALAMEDA, Calif. --Tim Brown will end his prolific NFL career with the Oakland Raiders after all.

"Tim will sign a one-day contract and retire as a Raider," team spokesman Mike Taylor said Wednesday.

The Raiders plan to hold a news conference later this month with owner Al Davis to recognize Brown, the former Heisman Trophy winner and longest-tenured player in franchise history.

Brown was released last August when he refused to accept a greatly diminished role in coach Norv Turner's offense. He signed with Tampa Bay to play what turned out to be his last season with former Raiders coach Jon Gruden.

Brown, who turns 39 on July 22, played the first 16 of his 17 seasons with the Raiders, and always hoped to be remembered as the organization's greatest receiver. He was the last former member of the Los Angeles Raiders and the person young players turned to for advice.

The self-proclaimed "Mr. Raider" holds most of the club's receiving records, and his 240 games with the team are the most in franchise history.

Brown was a first-round draft choice by the Raiders in 1988 out of Notre Dame.

The Raiders are happy he's part of the team again, even if he's no longer on the field hauling in passes.

"I'm glad to hear that," fullback Zack Crockett said. "When you hear Tim Brown's name, you hear nothing but Oakland Raider. You don't hear Tampa Bay. We followed in his footsteps with the Raiders. That's excellent for him. He's one of those guys who paved the way for everybody."

With the Raiders, Brown had 1,070 catches for 14,734 yards and 99 touchdowns. Last year with the Buccaneers, he had just 24 catches for 200 yards and one touchdown.

Brown is tied for third with Steve Largent on the career receiving touchdown list with 100 and second all-time behind Jerry Rice for career receiving yards with 14,934. His 1,094 career catches ranks third.

In his final season with Oakland, he had 52 catches for 567 yards and two touchdowns. Brown also helped the Raiders reach their first Super Bowl in 19 years after the 2002 season.

The team is planning to honor him before training camp opens at the end of this month in Napa.

"We hoped he would wait until training camp to do something formal, but he has something pending that necessitates he make a formal announcement now," Taylor said.

The story was first reported by NFL Network.

I liked how Tim Brown used to call Al Davis a punkass bitch in public or remark on the stupidity of Raider Nation. He also tried his damnedest to become a Bronco.

FTR!

He should have retired in orange & blue! :yep:
Classy guy...I would have liked seeing what he could do for the Broncos...

I think every fan of the broncos nation would have preferred Tim Brown to Anthony Miller...

Janie McAuley is a twit. "Mr. Raider" is Jim Otto's nickname, and everybody knows it. Tim Brown didn't "self-proclaim" a damned thing... particularly since "Mr. Raider" has worked for the Raiders in a front office capacity for years and years now...

He also tried his damnedest to become a Bronco.

You're a funny guy, Slap. He was offered a contract by the Broncos and the Raiders matched it. Tim Brown never looked back. I guess with that few of your own players in the Hall of Fame, you've got to go with a "he tried to be a Bronco!" but I think you'd be better off claiming Tony Dorsett or something...

Touchy, touchy, geez.

After signing the offer sheet for Denver, Brown had several caustic things to say about the Raiders & ol' greasy Al.

He back tracked for months after that.

...and yes he did look back. In an interview last year...I think it was on ESPN after he was released by the Raiders, he was asked if he ever regretted sticking with one team & he said;

"would have been nice to win a couple of Super Bowls"

I thought this was a direct reference to Denver's back-to-back championships...but, of course, raider & Chiefy fans will see it differently of course.

One of the few guys from Craptown I've ever respected. One of the all-timers, congrats on the retirement Tim!

I now have to throw up a little bit for complementing a Faider

OK, I'm better now

Good for him. I remember despising this guy growing up, because the Raiders would always it seem find a way to beat us it seemed.

But he's one of the greats, and I hope after this season, or whenever he chooses to retire, Rice does the same with the 49ers.

No different than you guys were when Elway retired.

He back tracked for months after that.

And this off-season, Trevor Pryce had some caustic things to say about the Broncos, didn't he? But then his contract got fixed and everyone played kiss and make up.

That's just the nature of the beast.

Answering a question hardly constitutes looking back, wabbit. Nice try.

Well, i think; "Football is a business and this place is all business", as opposed to...(and i don't even pretend to remember the exact quote, but fairly close);

'It's good to be going to a franchise that isn't run by one old man'

(I'm certain the 'one old man' was the subject of the comment)

One certainly seems to be more caustic than the other, but maybe that's just me.

I believe he was answering a question, not asking it

Very good for a very long time. Who needs to be great to get in the HOF?

Is that how you're spinning it these days, wabbit? Because I could have sworn that you had a different view of how things went back when it was all transpiring. I wonder why I remember it that way?

Oh, yeah... because you DID (http://66.49.247.155/BB/showpost.php?p=564768&postcount=22) look at it differently back then! Or were you talking about somebody else when you were talking about angry words being exchanged and hoping that rhetoric got set aside?

And since I said "Answering a question," I'm not honestly sure what your point is...

I remember some Raider fans taking his comment about SB rings the exact same way we did. But their retort was that the Raiders would get Tim those SB rings before he retired. Not with Al they wouldn't. Unfortunate for Tim. He always was a class act and probably why HE could see the problems with the way Al ran/runs the team.

Bottom line is Brown tried to bail when he could and he wanted out on more than one occasion. He ripped Greasy Al in public. He also ripped the unbridled ignorance of the Raider fan base in public. Mr Raider. Sure. Whatever you say.

You must have a terrible knack for reading people, Kaylore, because I'm far from angry. Seriously, I think this thread so far is hilarious. Tim Brown "tried his damndest to be a Bronco?" or "tried like hell to leave town" when the fact is that Tim Brown was literally hours away from unrestricted free agency had he used an out clause in his contract in 2000... but decided to stay with the Raiders. This, by the way, after a season that saw him notch 90 receptions for 1344 yards, and 6 touchdowns.

Yeah... he tried like hell alright...

And then you get the "he was very good but never great" argument, which is even funnier. The guy is top three in receptions, yardage, and touchdowns on the All-time NFL list... but he's not great?

Again, I think it's hilarious. The reason I can see the humor in it is because, frankly, while I am without a doubt a homer, you've got to draw a line somewhere. You're not going to catch me saying that John Elway wasn't one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time just because he played in Denver. Same story for Shannon Sharpe at TE. While I'll argue that Terrell Davis didn't play long enough to warrant the HOF, you'll never hear me say that, barring injury, he wasn't (a) one the best backs in the league and (b) well on his way to Canton. Why won't you catch me doing that? Because to do so would be ridiculous beyond reason.

Ditto that for the comments about Brown in this thread. To deny his greatness doesn't reflect on Tim Brown's career but rather on the objectivity of the poster attempting to deny it.

That's why it truthfully does make me laugh. It boggles the mind how far some will go in order to justify what they wish were true...
