LAWRENCE, Kansas (Ticker) - After struggles on and off the court, both Kansas and J.R. Giddens agreed that both need a fresh start.

Giddens, a sophomore guard who failed to live up to lofty expectations and was involved in bar fight on May 19, will transfer, Jayhawks coach Bill Self announced Thursday.

Although no charges have been filed in the incident, Giddens and five other people were injured in the incident. Giddens sustained a knife wound to his right calf that required 30 stitches.

"With everything that has transpired with this situation, coach and I are in total agreement that a fresh start would be best for Kansas and me," said Giddens, who hasn't decided where he will go next. "I'm sorry for what has transpired. Regardless of guilt or innocence, I put our program and myself in a bad situation."

While charges still could be filed, Kansas is conducting its own investigation into the matter, concerned about the reputation of its program.

"The last six weeks have been a difficult situation for all parties involved following the May 19 incident," Self said. "J.R. and I have both taken enough time to remove the emotion of the decision and come to the conclusion that a fresh start for both parties would be best.

After averaging 11.3 points and making 37 3-pointers as a freshman, Giddens was expected to be a major contributor in 2004-05, but his scoring averaged dipped to 10.1 points and he made 11 fewer 3-pointers. He went without a field goal in the Jayhawks' surprising 64-63 loss to 14th-seeded Bucknell in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

I saw that he was transferring yesterday on ESPN but didnt get the details.

No big loss, dude was capable of putting up a big fat donut on the point column in games.

He's the sort of guy that could get you 30 points or 2 points. I didn't see increased playing time helping that either. Defense was weak.

Defense, ball handling and jump shot were pathetic.

So, maybe JR wasn't the best player, but at least he has had experience on the team...who do we have coming back next year...Moody? And - they just hired a new "director of basketball" ??? What is going on in Lawrence!? We certainly aren't going to have the caliber of team we have had for a long time...

Every program has a few down years every now and then, but Self brought in a nice recruiting class last year and I'm sure KU will be doing the same this year, they're just reloading up for another run in a year or two.

I knew this would happen when your defending National Champion Coach, (Coach Roy is what we like to call him) left that criminal haven for a great team.

I bet that fight wouldn't have taken place if Roy was there, maybe he will transfer to UNC and Roy can turn him into the model player as he has done for all.

I think a lot of KU fans are just down on Self because of the let down last year.

I think he is a great coach. And I think once the spectre of Roy has subsided a little (in other words, now all his recruits are gone) the players will buy into it more.

Self did have a fine recruiting class last year and this year looks promising too. I think Crush Girl is right though, KU is going to have a bumpy road next year, BUT, the future is not as dim a picture as RR has painted for us.

I will agree on that, KU took a bad beat in the tourney and now the inexperience going into next year makes it for a bumpy road.

They'll be back though, Self was the one that brought in all thsoe Illini players that we all saw play for the NC last year, so he's a great recruiting and is bringing a lot of talent to Lawrence.

All big programs go through it, UNC did just a few years ago, UCLA did back in the late 90's, and Indiana is a in a big funk right now. UNC had a class of Sean May, Rashad McCants, and Ray Felton to bring the Heels back to the promised land, UCLA has landed some ncie players over the past couple years and they are headed on the way up again, it just happens.

When you lsoe players like Gooden, Collison, Heinrich, Simien, and Langford all in a 3 year span, there's going to be some adjustment periods where the inexperience shows and it tends to create a tough year for programs standards. KU will endure it for a year and then they're back up to the top.

The thing that did the 3 programs mentioned was the coaching, UCLA flopped under Steve Lavin, UNC flopped under Matt Dougherty, and Indians is currently flopping under Mike Davis. KU doesn't have that coaching problem, because going from Roy Williams to Bill Self isn't a big difference as Self is already proven coach with good recruiting and a system that players can buy into. The other 3 took a chance and got burned, so I doubt KU will be down longer than a year since Self is a much better coach than to let these players down.

NC is going to be rebuilding next year, too. Lost four first round picks. They'll be glad to make the tourney this year. Roy is a great coach, but he will have his hands full.

As for Roy leaving a "criminal haven", who exactly recruited those "criminals"? Roy allowed JR on his team, even though JR had just been arrested for helping steal $4000 worth of electronics from a local Wal-Mart. I don't mind Roy givind JR a second chance, but don't blame the problems JR has caused on Self.

I know. The truth is, nothing in this world could be as obnoxious as JJ Reddick being cheered on by a bunch of Dookies.

Reason #1 why I love Maryland fans, they are merciless when it comes to yelling at Duke players.

The "JJ is gay" chants are just classic, I always tune in to watch the Maryland vs. Duke games because it's a chaotic scene with those Terrapin fans.

North Carolina.

Kansas.

Wow, two of those three teams really had good years last season. You can tell the coaching change was good for them.

Kansas just got a bad draw in the tourney, having to face the mighty powerhouse known as Bucknell in the opening round was just wrong.

KU was shafted by the committee.
