"V: The Second Generation" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0366112/maindetails)

Plus I found this thread on it at BelowTopSecret (http://www.belowtopsecret.com/thread122893/pg1).

I remember the original scared the hell out of me as a kid, but I couldn't peel myself away from it... As I understand it, this new series is going to be a remake of the original... And not so much a sequel.

For those who were too young:

"V" -" V" stands for "Visitors," aliens from a distant planet Sirius IV who entered Earth's atmosphere in an armada of huge spacecrafts that hovered over all the major cities of the world. A representative from their mother ship made contact with the governments of the Earth assuring them, the only purpose for their arrival, was to share their advanced technological developments. In exchange, the Earth would give the aliens a shipment of minerals that were plentiful on our planet but lacking on theirs. Slowly, the aliens unloaded personnel and arranged for the transfer of materials. Using the Media to their advantage, the aliens created a propaganda package that convinced the people of Earth they had nothing to fear from their friends from the stars. In reality, the aliens planned to use the population of Earth as a food source for their home world, transporting the bodies in freezer-units located on-board their spacecrafts. Another alien deception was the Visitors' appearance. Beneath their humanoid facades lurked the scaly faces and bodies of two-legged reptiles. However, all good plans of mice and reptiles soon go awry. Their master plan was uncovered by a crusading broadcast journalist, Mike Donovan (Marc Singer) and a brilliant scientist, Dr. Juliet Parrish (Faye Grant), who formed a unit of freedom fighters to battle the alien occupational forces. Diana, (Jane Badler) the ruthless leader of the aliens, reveled in the torture of her human captives and in their eating. The hand-to-hand defense system used by the Visitors was called "Revoc" taught by the blood-thirsty mercenary, Klaus. It consisted of the deadly "silent strike" technique. However, not all the aliens agreed with their empire's plans to slaughter the Earth's population. Many followed the teachings of a renegade priest, Zon who taught against the tyranny of the Visitors. His disciples chanted "Zon is the cause for which I would die, but not for which I would kill." A partial solution to the alien occupation was the development of a red-powdered dust chemical compound safe to the humans but deadly to the reptiles. This "red dust" bacteria infiltrated the alien's gill tissues and suffocated them. With this weapon, the freedom fighters slowly began to win back the Earth from the alien domination. A female earthling, Robin Maxwell (Blair Tefkin) had fallen in love with one of these aliens, before she realized his true form or intentions. Her interplanetary romance produced a hybrid child with strange powers...powers that the alien empire wanted to exploit. These reptilian invaders first appeared on the 1983-84 miniseries "V" and on the subsequent spin-off V & V: THE FINAL BATTLE/NBC/1984-85. See also - "V"

I feel old.

Ha!

I don't remember much about "V" - - not because I was too young - - but because in the 80's I was out partying every night and never bothered with TV except to watch the games on Sundays.

I do remember an earlier "evil aliens" show called "The Invaders" with Roy Thinnes that ran in '67 and '68.

Now that was a scary show:

The Invaders - Alien beings from a dying planet
Their destination - The Earth
Their purpose - To make it their world
David Vincent has seen them, for him it began one lost night on a lonely country road, looking for a short-cut that he never found. It began with a closed deserted diner, and a man too long without sleep to continue his journey. It began with the landing of a craft from another galaxy. Now, David Vincent knows that the Invaders are here, that they have taken human form. Somehow he must convince a disbelieving world that the nightmare has already begun .

I thinkk this was remade into a 4 hour miniseries in '95 with Scott Bakula, but I never caught that version.

V was great. I wouldn't mind seeing a new version, but not a remake. There is so much story that could be told, why retell what we already know? That's like remaking Star Wars 4-6 instead of making the prequals.

On the plus side, DVDs have come to the rescue. I got season 2 of Combat! on DVD for Christmas. Those are still great shows. I was amazed to look back & see the quality of their co-stars - Lee Marvin was in one episode, Nick Adams in another, James Coburn playing a Nazi infiltrator in another ...

other episodes had Charles Bronson, Eddie Albert, Telly Savalas, John Cassavetes, Warren Oates, Robert Duvall ...

Pretty nice casting for a TV show.

Maverick is one example of how a movie version of the show helped, at least in my case. After watching the movie, I WANTED to go back and see the TV show because I liked the movie version so much.

I saw him get shot and tossed out of a moving car. I saw him jump off the second floor of a warehouse onto an armed perpetrator and get up like it was all in a day's work. I don't know of any detective show of its time that was more violent.

I was also madly in love with his secretary Peggy Fair. She was the perfect woman. Smart, beautiful and loyal to a fault.

Facrotie is Gaelic for favorite.

Cosby Show was good, but those multi-colored sweaters everyone always wore tended to wear on my eyes a bit.

Ahh. Thanks for the definition.

It's much funnier to me now that I have my own kids, goofy sweaters or not. :)

Herve had health problems and he did end up taking his own life. One day I was driving down Hollywood Way in Burbank and I almost ran him over jaywalking. Scared the hell out of both of us and he gave me a really pissed off look. Shot himself a couple months later.

V? Are you serious? It was great - when I was 10!

And does anyone see a huge PR disaster looming with their plans to promote this POS with a "fly over the city creating a huge red V in the sky?" Hey, NBC, it's not 1983! If you have picked up a paper in the past 10 years or so you might have noticed a few events that make people a little edgy when they see aircraft doing weird things in the sky over major metropolitan areas!

Come on NBC, why don't you just put Natalie on the Biggest Loser, give Blair some botox, get new skates for Tootie and roll out a new version of "Facts of Life?"

it sucks. the first 8:30 of the first episode is over on Hulu to be viewed. the writing looks to be very bad. typical non-thinking crap they always spit out in Hollyweird. for example, the ships appear over the cities. people rush to see the ship. even though all of these people saw the movie Independence Day and know what "may" happen when a giant spaceship appears over your city. then, as they stand around, the National Guard instantly appears... like within minutes of the ships appearing, and start pushing people around and telling them to move on because it's a restricted area. and of course that leads within a few seconds to citizens rioting and fighting with each other. because that was the lesson of 9/11. americans are just dumb oafs and faced with something that scares them, they don't HELP their fellow citizens, they start fist fighting with them. didn't you see all those fist fights in NYC while the twin towers were burning? nobody was helping anyone... they were just fighting. apparently that's what Hollyweird believes. and then there is the touching scene where a mother calls her son and finds out he's in the hospital. she tells him to stay there, she's on her way. of course, he doesn't, he tries to ride his bike home. only to be thwarted by those jack-booted national guard thugs who tell him to turn around, it's a restricted area. and of course in the middle of this riot and mob, his mom shows up and they find each other and everyone lives happily ever after. or not.

it's just stupid. this script has been filmed a dozen times before. giant storm coming? let's all go riot in the streets. nuclear armegeddon? let's go fight each other in the streets. everybody loses consciousness for a couple of minutes? let's all wake up and start rioting. because when people get scared, they resort to mindless violence. blech! it's all nonsense. i won't waste my time watching even the first episode in its entirety when it airs.

V was great. I wouldn't mind seeing a new version, but not a remake. There is so much story that could be told, why retell what we already know? That's like remaking Star Wars 4-6 instead of making the prequals.

The idea, from my understanding, is to remake the "franchise" with fresh faces, so they can take it in a different direction and make sequels, kind of like what is happening with the Star Trek franchise now.

If we want this to happen, the best thing we can do is watch November 3rd. And it's on ABC, not NBC.

Though popular with the public, Villechaize proved a difficult actor on Fantasy Island where he continually propositioned women and quarreled with the producers. He was eventually fired after demanding that his pay be on par with that of co-star Ricardo Montalbán. The show's popularity waned after this move, and it was soon canceled. According to his former butler in an episode of E! True Hollywood Story[2], Villechaize never got over losing his job, and for the remainder of his life practiced an often nightly ritual of drinking in a darkened room while screaming obscenities at an episode of Fantasy Island playing on his television.

He played the lead character in the 1980 cult classic movie Forbidden Zone.

He made his final appearance in a cameo as himself in an episode of The Ben Stiller Show.
