Does the XBOX need a hard line for on-line play or can you access the internet through a wireless connection?

It needs a hard-line, but I believe there are 3rd-party wireless adapters you can buy. At least there are for PS2.

You can use wireless with anything...but the signal strength is going to determine whether it's playable

I use a wireless connection with mine... Don't have too many problems except on major solar interference days... which all wireless has trouble on. Or so I've been told.

You can buy a wireless Gateway device. It is an adapter to bridge from your ethernet port to a wireless interface. They are not cheap (at least $50.00), but they will work great.

A nice benefit is the ability to add other devices to that bridge. Lets say you had a computer in close proximity, you could attach a wired swtch to it and then uplink to this bridge device.

The sad thing is that every wireless router out there is really a bridge as described. If you disable / do not use routing functions from a wireless router, you can just connect it as an access point to the rest of your wireless network and plug in your XBOX to a physical ethernet cable.

Benefit of going this way is you can pick up a wireless router sometimes for about $9.99.
