Raiders | Looking to Acquire Owens?
Thu, 30 Jun 2005 09:41:47 -0700
WPVI.com reports there is some speculation the Philadelphia Eagles could trade WR Terrell Owens to the Oakland Raiders for WR Jerry Porter. If the trade were to occur, the Raiders would have two of the best wide receivers in the NFL: Randy Moss and Terrell Owens. Moss told reporters Wednesday, June 29, he could co-exist with Owens as long as he got the number of passes he deserves.

Owens' Days as Bird Numbered?
PHILADELPHIA-June 30, 2005 — With all the contract squabbles continuing, are the Eagles about to give T.O. the heave-ho?
There are reports a trade is in the works with the Oakland Raiders. Owens would go to Oakland for wide receiver Jerry Porter.
T.O. may be trade bait because he wants the Eagles to give him more money.
If he goes to Oakland, the Raiders would have two of the best wide receivers in the NFL: Terrell Owens, and Randy Moss.
Yesterday, Moss told reporters he could co-exist with T.O. as long as he got the number of passes he deserves.

With their Oline that would be a scary combo. Collins would be throwing til his arm fell off. I wonder how Jordan would feel getting less touches as a starter than he got as a backup.

I don't think it could. He wants to be the highest paid receiver if I'm not mistaken. Do they have the room for that? I guess if Porter was one of those, they would.

Won't happen. This is just crazy ass internet speculation. Porter just resigned with the Raiders. He got a nice signing bonus on a 5 year deal. Trading him now would accelerate everything... and that's not even dealing with the issue that once we get T.O., we've got to probably pay him more than we're paying Porter at the moment.
This may make for fun banter, but it's not going to happen.

I could be wrong, but this seems like one of those reach stories. First of all, Oakland is too cap strapped to be doing many moves. Secondly, they would be fools to take on 2 WR that are nearing the end of their careers. This sounds to me like fodder to keep people interested for the next month. I would actually be happy to see Oakland do the deal because I think it would suicided. I think Philly would make out like bandits in this deal -- a younger, cheaper WR that is locked up for a long time.

Hoping, and wishing, and praying, and lovin....... That much money invested in WR's would equate to 0 chance of them fixing that defense anytime soon. Of course it'll be hard to stop them offensively. I honestly think they're looking at being top 3 without the addition of Owens. But their defense will be horrible!!!

Ah... but after any touchdowns, their _efense has to take the field.... allowing the other team's offense the opportunity to tie up the game. The Fade would be sacrificing "balance" for many seasons to come for the high-powered offense. Like the recent Chefs teams have demonstrated, a potent offense isn't always able to counterbalance an incredibly-weak defense.

Good point. People who don't understand the cap are going crazy over this.
The Eagles aren't in a good position to trade TO (for the same reasons that TNS pointed out above). If they traded him it would be like if they cut him in terms of the cap. The remainder of his prorated signing bonus would count against their cap this year. That's a huge number. If they traded him right now they'd have to cut a number of players just to get under the cap for this season. A trade is really not possible. And TO is going to have to go back to them, or they'll be able to go after his signing bonus. He'll have to repay his portion, and the portion that the IRS took. Uncle Sam ain't giving his money back because TO wants a new deal. You think TO still has that kind of jack? If he sits out that house on MTV Cribs will be up for sale. TO really doesn't have a leg to stand on here. Either he plays or he'll be broke by the time the Eagles are done with him.
The only way this trade could ever work was if both teams were way under the cap, and they didn't mind having all that dead money. Or if both teams were willing to cut a bunch of players to get under the cap.

A. TO is "locked up" for a long time and look how that worked out.
Yeah TO is locked up, but he's 32 and coming off a major injury. Porter does not have that same brash attitude to ask for another deal after one year. All things considered, I would rather have Porter than TO if I am Philly. He is younger and cheaper and they have demonstrated they can win without TO.
B. I think Randy is just getting started... another 7 good years.
Tough to predict, but there's no reason to think you're wrong. In general, once a player gets over that 7 - 8 year mark they are peaking. I doubt Moss will dominate the way he has for 7 more years, but he could very well be an elite player for that long.

I'd take TO and all his problems over Porter. Porter is a middle of the road WR. When is he going to have that break out year? TO is a Super Star. He's an MVP type player. He may be causing problems now, but he'll be back with the Eagles. His agent isn't going to let him holdout for long. He would be the big loser if that happened. The Eagles would take all their money back.

That's why I said all things considered. I'd take TO over just about any WR (maybe Moss?) in the game for one season. After that he is just plain cancer. So yeah, he's a better WR. But he is burning bridges fast. I think Philly would take Porter because he is young and would be a viable WR to go along with their rookie Brown. Porter may not be on TO's level, but he's younger, cheaper, and more reliable over the long haul.

That's what people thought when the Avs signed Teemu and Karyia last year. Just because you assemble a ton of talent doesn't mean you'll have a good team. Chemistry and attitude play a big part of the overall success. I'm not saying it couldn't happen, but it's not likely to be long lasting success if it does. Both of them always blows up sooner or later. The Raiders would have 100 million tied up into 2 30+ WR. That's scary.

Randy Moss and Terrell Owens are indeed very scary by themselves, but they dont scare me when their on the same team.
They both play when they want to play and they both say this to some extend every season.
TO will run that 10 to 8 yard curl only if its the 4th quarter of the superbowl or if its in the Endzone. Yes, He'll catch the hard ones, hes tough like that. But he only catches the hard ones. If you dont tell TO he's getting the ball or if he thinks your throwing to Moss, he wont run the route right. Now, if you throw it to him a lot then He'll be happy but then Randy won't be. And both of them will be in collins face if he throws to Curry or audibles run.
TO could get open anytime he wants, but why should he help out the team unless hes sure to get credit for it? With 3 guys on him TO can produce the same amount as when he has 1 guy on him so i dont think its going to change that much.
Randy doesnt run across the middle. Infact, Randy doesnt catch short balls. You gotta throw outside and deep for Randy. Watch the Bear game in 2004, he runs across the middle on a dig on 4th and long, Culpepper throws down the middle and..... He stops and lets the ball nearly get picked.
Honestly, TO and Randy can get open as easily with 2 guys draped on them as with 1. So teams are just going to cover them 1 on 1 now and blitz Collins all day and take their chances. My guess? For nearly every TD Collins throws next year he will throw a pick.

I'm not a Moss fan but I think there is a mis-conception that he wont go over the middle or catch a short pass. I've heard it before but find it hard to believe that the only balls he catches are long balls. So, I did a little research to see if it was true.
1st-10, MIN27 4:04 D. Culpepper passed to R. Moss to the right for 8 yard gain
2nd-3, MIN34 0:36 D. Culpepper passed to R. Moss down the middle for 12 yard gain
1st-10, MIN26 10:36 D. Culpepper passed to R. Moss down the middle for 2 yard gain
2nd-10, GB12 14:55 D. Culpepper passed to R. Moss to the right for 12 yard touchdown. M. Andersen made PAT
D. Culpepper passed to R. Moss to the right for 9 yard gain
D. Culpepper passed to R. Moss to the right for 5 yard gain
D. Culpepper passed to R. Moss to the right for 6 yard gain
This is two games here. There were some long balls to him in those two as well but he does catch short balls and does go over the middle. Not as much as he probably goes long, but he does catch short balls. I'm sure the highlights only show the long balls and the short ones get no attention. But when we're sitting there watching the Bronco game at the same time the the vikings were playing, you really have no clue what he's doing cause only the long glamour plays get the highlights at night.
Moss does like the outside routes but that's his strong point. The outside routes are where he eats up CB's. He will go short and over the middle though.

Here, long after I made my official declaration, is what NFL Reporting GIANT (in the same way that the National Enquirer is a HUGELY important American Newspaper) profootballtalk.com has to say about it:
T.O.-FOR-PORTER TRADE RUMORS "LUDICROUS"
There are rampant rumors among NFL fans and media that the Philadelphia Eagle might send disgruntled wideout Terrell Owens to the Raiders for Jerry Porter.
One league insider termed these rumors "ludicrous." As the source said, "Anyone who knows anything about football knows that this deal will not happen. There's a better chance of the Eagles giving Owens a new contract, and the chances of that happening are zero."
The biggest impediment to such a deal is that the Raiders paid a $7 million signing bonus to Porter earlier this year. With the bonus spread over only five years per the CBA, Porter's current cap number is $2.4 million ($1.4 million bonus allocation and $1 million in salary). Trading him would cause the entire bonus to accelerate against the 2005 cap, pushing the total cap hit to $7 million, for a net increase of $4.6 million.
Picking up Owens' salary would chew up another $3.25 million in 2005 cap space, pushing the total cap cost of the deal to $7.95 million.
On top of that, Owens wants a new contract.
Also, it's important not to underestimate the reality that the Raiders recently handed one of those oversized PGA tour checks in the amount of $7 million to Porter. As Saints owner Tom Benson would attest, those are "real dollars." It's hard for any team to justify giving a guy $7 million -- and then sending him on his way.
If, after all, Al Davis had a set of vampire dentures in his pocket for T.O., Davis could have jumped into the bidding a year ago, when Owens was a quasi-free agent.
Besides, trading T.O. would be an implicit admission by the Eagles that Owens won the high-stakes stare down over the current value of his contract. Even if there would be a chance (and there ain't) of moving Owens to get a guy like Porter, the Eagles aren't going to do anything that would imply that the flinched.
So an Owens-for-Porter trade will not happen. Ever.
How f***ing smart am I, right?

I enjoyed this part the best of PFT's take on this.

I didn't mind it so much. Yeah, Al Davis has vampire dentures... I suppose he loaned them to Jerry Porter on that trip to Invesco last year.
No, wait... that can't be right. It was Champ Bailey that was sucking in that game...

Pray this doesn't happen... Anyone who thought the last 2 beating's the colts gave us was bad.... (((Shudders)))... With their O-Line, Collins deep ball, and those 3 recievers..... (((Shudders)))...
In order to be able to sleep the rest of the week i'm going to pretend i didn't see this.
Doesn't scare me in the least. In fact I would find it entertaining (Moss and TO wanting the balls they "deserve"). They both had two of the best QB's throwing to them and still weren't happy, still didn't get SB rings and now they would have Collins throwing to them. Let's all watch the Raiders implode all over Al's white jump suit.

It scares me. They didnt need Moss or TO to come up to our place and make us look like a bunch of queers when we should have ran their asses off the ****ing field by halftime. Moss and TO= We'd get raped. Period. Pretty much anyone would, and that includes New England, esp. if Collins had time to throw and he has two young and upcoming lineman. Thank God that Defense sucks ass.

My fears exactly, SoCal. It'd be what nightmares are made of. No wait, all the Raiturd fans flooding over here after we'd been raped would be what nightmares were made of.

Ha! Considering the number I've heard the term "scoreboard" from Bronco fans, it truly makes me laugh to hear y'all act like b*tches and throw out that "Oh, yeah? Well... we beat you the time before you beat us!"
If I bring up the ass whipping you got in the snow, can you break out that "we won two times ago" excuse again? I swear, gunns, it never gets old!

Yeah i dont want to think of more troll infestation. We'd see all these homers, who have, at best posted here maybe once or twice before all thumping their chests after hiding in caves for 2 years.
On the bright side, i honestly dont think it could be worse than all the Chiefs fans who infest this site when we lose or when they beat us during the last two years in particular. God thats about the most awful thing to bear. Chief Fan has a rare gift for being an assholish troll on a message board. I think there is a chemical imbalance or something in them. Prolly has something to do with the fact that they prefer BBQ sauce on their vanilla ice cream instead of chocolate syrup. The body doesnt react well to that i dont think.

First of all, the game in the snow wasn't an ass whipping. You have to admit that was a good game that was decided on a field goal. We were back and forth in that game.
The game we beat you guys in your house was a genuine whipping.

Since when did a one-point squeaker morph into an "ass whipping"? And Elam had the opportunity to put the game away as time ticked away.... even the most rabid rival homer has to acknowledge that Elam makes that kick nine times out of ten.

Please.
Don't try that sh*t with me now. Over the course of Shanahan's run over Oakland, how many of them were decided by 7 points or less?
And how many times did I have to hear about an "ass whipping" from you guys?
Yes, that snow game was an ass whipping... from the second the final gun sounded, just like all of those Denver wins were... ha!

A lot of those wins were by less than seven points (more than just a couple by a Jason Elam FG)... and while those still go into the "W" column, I do not characterize them as "ass whippings". Normally that term is reserved for two-score wins.
No the snow game was a "squeaker"... you can't spin a 1-point win (that would have been a loss had the last-minute FG been good, as most Elam attempts are....) as a dominating, convincing win.

Eagles laugh off talk of Owens-Porter trade
http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/3732064
While it sure made for some interesting speculation, don't count on the Raiders forming a superpower receiving combo of Terrell Owens and Randy Moss.
Broadcast rumors Thursday the Raiders and Eagles were discussing a trade that would bring Owens to the Raiders in exchange for receiver Jerry Porter. But a high-ranking Eagles official just laughed it off.
"It won't happen," the Eagles official told Phillyburbs.com.
Owens has spent the off-season demanding a raise and grumbling about holding out until he gets one. But the Eagles have stood firm, refusing to rework his contract and with players and management taking many opportunities to let Owens know that they can with win him or without him in the lineup.
"Like I always said, if I'm one of the top players in the game, pay me like I'm one of the top players in the game," Owens said in an interview on Comcast SportsNet. "That's not being selfish. That's not being greedy. Right is right and wrong is wrong. ...
"I don't have to play football. I don't have to play for the Eagles. It doesn't matter what any of my teammates have said about me. That doesn't matter to me."
Owens caught 77 passes for 1,200 yards and a club-record 14 touchdowns last season, and he had a big game in the Eagles' Super Bowl loss to the Patriots.
Porter caught 64 passes for 998 yards and nine touchdowns last season and signed a lucrative contract extension this off-season.
