I just find it curious that you chose Howie Long over Guys like Bruce Smith and Reggie White.

Howie didn't get the numbers of Bruce or Reggie because they moved him up and down the line - you never knew where he would line up. I picked him because, overall, I think he caused more disruptions to an offensive line than anyone I've ever seen play. It's not just sack numbers.

At the time, I hated him. But I had to admire the way he played the game.

I'll probably take some heat for this, but Atwater wasn't even the best safety on his team. Although Atwater was a great safety, he wasn't better than Dennis Smith.

:nono: Smith was a great safety no doubt. But #27 was better.

That's a good one, ATlas (though I couldn't take Rathman over Campbell). Smith and Atwater were both great safeties. I think Atwater had a much higher "Fear" factor. I can't count how many times I saw WRs go all "alligator arms" going across the middle when Steve was back there. There's no stat for "Caused WR to drop pass." Ronnie Lott had that same effect.

I concur. Atwater's play in the SB will always guarantee him a special place in my heart!

The list includes no one who played before 60, just because I didn’t see them.
QB the Duke

RB Sweetness

FB ... hard to say. Earl was really a RB ... a big one. Moose was the prototype of today’s. Jim Taylor blocked AND ran. I’d think Bronco Nagurski could do the job, but not my era.

WR Rice

WR Maynard, really had the yards in the old days. Bambi was arguably more explosive, but didn’t play as long. Hard to overlook Raymond Berry too.

TE Sharpe

OT Munoz, greatest.

OT Of those I saw, I’d put Yary or Shell. But, they had nothing on Zimmerman. Bob Brown is another guy. He arguably revolutionized the position by attacking.

G Hog Hannah, ain’t nobody close.

G Larry Little or Upshaw.

G. Webster roided out. Dierdorf (kidding) Dwight Stevenson’s my pick.

Kicker - Jan Stenarude (-:

DE Deacon Jones

DE Elvin Bethea and LeRoy Selmon. Damn, and then there’s Slap’s guy, Younblood. I’m going Bethea simply cause he was AFC, but Selmon was a force of nature.

DT Alan Page

DT Joe Green, though for rupturing Howard, I’m going Bob Lilly. Buck Buchanon wasn’t half bad, but I saw enough of him to be sick of him.

MLB Butkus. I got no choice.

OLB. Crackhead

OLB Jack Ham

CB Louis Wright (homer pick) I really considered picking 3, but I just don’t see anybody in the HOF who, imo, was really better, except Lem Barney. I don’t understand the focus so much on whether Atwater or Smith were better. Smith hands down, imo. But, I think Billy Thompson was a better SS than Smith, who played there cause of Atwater, and I think Billy Thompson actually played some FS when Bernard Jackson was here. Maybe the other way around. Lots of drugs in the 70s. But of the four, imo, Wright was clearly the better player.

CB Night Train Lane is credited with being the first modern CB, but he’s outside my timeline. So, I’d go Willie Brown for excellence and longevity, though why Den traded him is something I don’t understand and get pissed about, so I’ll cut him off and go with .... Lem Barney, who imo was better anyway.

SS Lott

FS Willie Wood, though Larry Wilson wasn’t bad either.

P the Faid guy.

I think that you have to put Barry Sanders as starting RB.

Shannon Sharpe is an easy #1 TE.

Henry Ellard? Terrell Owens? I think that Marvin Harrison or Moss might be on that list when all is said and done.

When we got the ball:

QB - John Elway - Obviously.

RB - Walter Payton - Jim Brown loses his job for being a prick 24 hours a day and also for retiring early.

FB - Earl Campbell - Technically a tailback and Payton was better blocker, but I just want to see him flatten people.

LT - Anthony Munoz - Naturally.

LG - Hog Hannah - Ditto.

C - Dermontti Dawson - Edging out Dwight Stephenson.

RG - Larry Allen - Huge and mean.

RT - Dan Dierdorf - People laugh at the guy now, but he was probably the best right tackle of the last 30 years. He was a naturally huge man who was light on his feet and excellent in all phases. He even stepped in at center for Tom Banks near the end of his career. Great, great player.

TE - Shannon Sharpe - Easy call.

WR - Jerry Rice - So far ahead of the second best WR its laughable.

WR - Charley Taylor - Retired as the all time leading reciever despite spending first three seasons at running back. Big, strong, fast and deadly in the open field.

K - Who cares. Elam, I guess.

When they got the ball:

LE - Deacon Jones - The Reverend.

LT - Reggie White - The Minister, God rest his soul, moving inside where that bull rush will do even more damage.

RT - Buck Buchanan - Height, durability, pass rush.

LE - Jack Youngblood - Had to shuffle my front four and switch him to the weakside to get Jack in the lineup, but he's worth the trouble.

SLB - Jack Ham - Smartest LB ever.

MLB - Dick Butkus - Shut up! My parents named me that because they love me!

WLB - Lawrence Taylor - Worth the headaches, especially the first few seasons.

CB - Mike Haynes - Most complete cornerback ever.

CB - Dick Lane - Big, physical, great hands.

FS - Ronnie Lott - Gotta give him his due.

SS - Ken Houston - Best safety ever.

P - Pat McInally - Just wanted to snub Ray Guy.

KR/PR - Billy Johnson and Rick Upchurch.

Slap: Yeah, I missed on Reggie. Clearly better than Selmon or Bethea. Though Bethea did play in a 3-4 for at least part of his career, and he could still turn games on his own. A great player.

I just can't put Dierdorf on my team. I just hate the guy, as an announcer and for being a a-hole in taking money to advertise telling people BEFORE the new bankruptcy law to take out an equity loan on their house to pay off credit card debt. Hell, the guy Ray Lewis helped kill prolly NEEDED killing, and Crackhead the greatest linebacker of all time only did drugs.

I can prolly agree with Houston as being the best ever, and that would move Lott to FS, but I didn't have anybody from the Green Bay dynasty, which was arguably even better than the Pittsburgh teams, and Willie Wood seemed sort of a natural. 3 back to back NFL titles outta be worth something.

D. Dawson and L. Allen, no argument, but I liked my guys just as much.

I just can't do the stickem guy at corner, and imo Wright was just as good. If the Hall and Dan R66v6s wouldn't give him his due, f-em.

--
Brown/Sweetess/Barry/Emmitt. I just think Sweetness was the most complete back. He could break them early in his career with horrible teams. He could block better than guys bigger than him. He could catch. He was gold on short yardage. And he literally played his heart out.

you shouldnt get any heat for it, since its the truth.

as great as atwater was, smith was better.

he hit harder, played smarter, and was substantially better in coverage (especially in his older years)
