I've been listening to the audio of his confession. He calmly recounts the graphic details. There's no emotion in his voice at all. He sounds more like a lawyer or politician with his retelling of events. It's actually quite scary that he appears to not feel sorry for anything... Yikes!

a straight up guilty plea or by reason of insanity?

straight up guilty. In fact, the judge asked if he was pleading guilty because he was guilty, and he said yes. He's guaranteed to spend eternity behind bars because these murders happened before Kansas brought back the death penalty. Therefore, he isn't eligible to die for these murders.

Too bad. Obviuosly has no remorse for his actions and shouldn't be allowed to live. Can you imagine the shock this community has been through. This guy was a scout leader! Wow! Amazing how no one even had a clue.

If I were a relative of a victim or a resident of the area, I would be happy that there will not be some long drawn out trial on the front page of every news publication and news broadcast. He gets the max and goes away quietly.

What's even more amazing is that Park City is VERY small. It's an "everybody knows your name" type of town. This nut was able to hide the truth from even his neighbors for MANY years.

Happens like that more often than not, serial killrs are hidden inside while they appear to be normal citizens to everyone.

Looks more like veteran character actor Michael Ironside to me:

He was also the president of his Lutheran church council.

I have to believe the guy is split personality....living here in Kansas the local news eats this story up with things that don't merit national media, but this guy uses himself as a second person in communication via his mails and such...not only did he fool his neighbors, he had his family fooled for all these years.

Death penalty is what he needs .......

Unfortunately, since these murders occurred at a time when Kansas didn't have the death penalty, he's not eligible to die by the hands of the state. However, when he runs into "Bubba" in jail, the inmates may decide to take matters in their own hands...

I'm from Wichita, he got himself caught for a reason. So guys like us and the media would talk about him. F*** him he can rot in hell.

He talked about Masturbating over a young dead girls body.

The life sentence is much more deserving.

I hope Buba gives him a taste of his own meds.

I'm trying to figure out whose idea it was to go over all those details in open court.

On this whole remorse thing ... he didn't have any remorse after he killed the first family. He went out and killed again. And again. And yet again. And after he quit for awhile and had a chance to think about it, he apparently didn't have much remorse then either, because he did it again. And then waited several years and did it again.

Then, after a long period of dormancy, he starts communicating. He wasn't sending his thoughts of remorse. He was taunting people.

He didn't turn himself in. He was caught.

So why on earth would anyone think that his guy would show up at court and start bawling and crying and telling everyone how sorry and remorseful he is?

And if he did that, would there be a single person who'd believe him?

He did this for thrills, and it sounds like he enjoyed every minute of it.

I think there is some value in getting his statements out. We can learn something about how freaks like this think. How they pick their victims. What kinds of preparations they make and what kinds of things they overlook. Maybe understanding some of this will help us catch the next predator at an earlier stage and save some lives.

His lack of remorse tells me that his statements about his techniques are probably accurate. If he was doing the Ted Bundy thing and having all these last minute attacks of conscience, I'd be much more skeptical about a lot of what he said.

But I don't understand why all this was done in front of the families and the press. An interview in his cell would have produced the same information without subjecting the families to his arrogance.

I'm not sure whose idea it was to get the details of the murders at the arraignment. I don't think Judge Waller knew that he was going to plead guilty, so I'm guessing it was the idea of Rader and his lawyers. I know the courts did put the kibosh on someone who was claiming to offer "spiritual advice" to him, but was really arranging for a book to be written. The only way the story would be told is if he offered the information himself.

The judge did a good job with the interview, but maybe it WAS the wrong forum...

It's hard for us "normal" (maybe not the right description for some people on this board) people to understand how he can talk about murder with no emotion.

From what I understand psychopaths like BTK have no emotional connection to anyone. No empathy and disconnection from society allow them to kill people and go on with their lives like nothing happened.

I saw an interview on CNN with an expert on seriel killers. He said 4% of males are psychopathic, most just don't go out an actually kill. That seems like a high number, but if its true thats pretty damn scary.

... I'm guessing it was the idea of Rader and his lawyers. ...

Rader maybe, but his lawyers? I doubt it. Think about it. It couldn't be much fun to stand up there next to this POS and stare at the floor while he droned on for 45 minutes, in a fairly meticulous fashion, about all the psycho details of the crimes... with the families of the victims sitting out there and staring at you with laser beams of hatred and anguish at your little congregation.

Of course, defense attorneys are probably all sort of crazy to start with ...
