Any of the techies out there have an opinion on the best choice for antivirus software? My nortons is about to expire and I'm wondering if there is something better out there.
I'm running XP with an athlon chip.

I run Avast antivirus. The free version. So far so good. Updates itself everyother day it seems.

I use Panda Titanium (http://www.pandasoftware.com/home/default.asp) for my home network. I find both Norton and McAfee to be system hogs. AVG (http://www.grisoft.com/doc/40/lng/us/tpl/tpl01) is a great product and many people find the free version quite adequate.

Does AGV hog the system?
Not from my experience. I have several customers who insist on operating computers with very low Ram and I have found that AVG works well on systems with limited memory. I have a few customers who still try to operate at 128 Ram (this is crazy, by the way, XP needs at least 256 to function properly) and AVG was the only antivirus I could find that wouldn't cause their system to come to a standstill. AVG is very inobtrusive and the free version is just fine for most people. One of the drawbacks with the free version is that you can't schedule updates and scans, you have to live with the default schedule. Not really that big of a deal.
*Forgot to mention that AVG Free does not have a firewall, so if that is a necessity, this will not work for you. Most users today have XP which of course has a firewall built in.

Replace an 11mo old comp? What do think I am..... a Chiefs fan? Maybe I should just give it a mullet and call it good. Not even a comp virus would go near it then. :boxing:

Have numerous run ins with Symantec so I avoid their products. I get McAfee from Costco. Seems as good as anything with auto updates.

Personally, I would either go with Nortons or Panda ( no particular order )on top of that I would check out microsofts anti spyware beta. I found that their beta is better than every spyware removal tool out there. I had a customer who had an infected computer. I used Adaware & Spybot Search & destroy to try to remove the infected files neither worked. Microsofts removal tool found the files instantly!

For what it's worth, and from a tech stand-point, it aint worth too much credibility because I'm not much of a software geek...BUT, I run AVG free edition & it's caught everything headed my way PLUS it sucks up very little Ram
It also helped clean out a badly infected computer of a business associate of mine, who then bought the 'professional' version for his whole office.
grisoft.com for the AVG free edition
You can schedule daily updates just by downloading it with a default schedule, or, as I prefer (& if you can remember), update it manually to avoid conflict with your boot-up.

I had heard good things about Trend Micro PC-Cillin. Surprised it hasn't come up. I have heard of Panda, but not AVG. AVG seems to be getting good reviews here. I'm not thrilled with Norton's product. It just seems top-heavy in the way it hogs resources and I'm not convinced there isn't something more effective out there.
I appreciate everyone who has made usful comments here. Thanks.

I run Norton but I got a high end computer. I run Norton but not even really for the AV, but for the system tools. For what I do on my computer, there ends up with a lot of windows and disk errors and Norton has great system tools to fix these problems.
AVG and Panda would be my recommendations on old skool computers though.
Microsofts Spyware beta is kickass and I highly recommend it. I even removed Spybot and Ad-Aware SE from my machine because I no longer need them.

in the world of virus protection I'd have to say that Norton is the
nevermind that it hogs up all your computers resources but have you ever tried to uninstall Norton that was installed from one of the system works cd's? can you say REFORMAT

Is that right? I would like to hear someone second that emotion. You can't remove it easily from your system?

it just depends on how it was installed and what other software you have on your pc..
I've had more problems than I can remember from trying to get rid of older versions of Norton... maybe the newest version isn't too hard to get rid of, but I know from first hand experience about the older versions of Norton and Norton system works... I've had to reformat my old 98 machine numerous times because of Norton Antivirus, Internet Security, and system works.

No offense to you, Jelw, but I have thought this thought process is a large part of the reason we all have so many issues.

My company runs trend on their network and on all our laptops. DON"T bother. Memory hog is not adequate...slows the boot up by a factor of ten or so. Its own control panel is horrendously slow. Of course maybe the corporate version we get stuck with is set to stop everything ...but I have never liked it.
I run Mcafee on my home PCs, and it has been adequate (buy at costco) but I get tired of it always hawking its own upgrades and its ads. Plus its a bitch to uninstall completely, (leaves trash all over the registry)
Treid Norton once and it was even worse.
Guess I'll be looking for something new myself when my updates time out.

So how happy are you that Mac switched to the Intel chip and will likely be a big target for virus; and adware now. Good luck on that whole "more secure than PCs" theory.

Just did a Norton uninstall on a brand new Dell for a customer. Dell installed it even though the customer had specifically asked them not to put it on there. It was installed, but had to be activated and paid for within 30 days to keep it. I couldn't believe how much Norton had taken over that computer. Looking at startup and registry, there were Norton items everywhere. It took roughly ten minutes for XP to uninstall all that crap. Ten minutes is pretty long for an uninstall on a new computer.

It took me awhile to get rid of norton even after uninstall for a major manufacturer i think thats pathetic to leave stuff on your system after an uninstall.

OK, I may be leaning toward Panda now with their Trueprevent Technologies. It is loaded in their anti virus bundle and apparently attacks malicious code by it's behavior... allowing it to sniff out bugs that your AntiVirus hasn't even downloaded protection for yet. You can load this software on singularly as an add on as well.
PC mag or PC World mag reviewed it in the latest issue and claims it performed well on tests. Any opinions on this out there?

Good that's gonna make my current Mac G-4 laptop a highly sought after classic machine some day.

Panda always performs well on tests and is usually rated high in reviews. I've used it since 2000 - currently running Panda Titanium on my home network. The current version includes a firewall, but if your XP firewall is enabled, you don't need to turn on the Panda firewall. In fact, having two firewalls enabled may create problems for you. I run Panda with Microsoft's Antispyware beta and Spyware Blaster. Don't remember ever picking up a virus with this combination.
Microsoft Antispyware (http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx)
Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html)
Both of the above are totally free (no adware of any kind).
