He talked to his Dad during the week and gave up some info and then he went out and basically threw the game by have an injured Herndan covering Atlanta's #1 WR instead of Bailey. Then when Shanny told him to switch the coverages he didn't and Herndan gave up another TD.

Holy crap! I didn't know that but that would explain why he's still unemployed by the NFL. Damn traitor!

Fired mid season and still unemployed speaks of more than what has been said so far although the insubordnation to Shanahan could be enough to get him fired but would that keep him from being hired by another team?
And what does this all say about Coyer's ability as a leader

You must remember this A kiss is still a kiss A sigh is just a sigh The fundamental things apply As time goes by And when two lovers woo They still say I love you On that you can rely The world will always welcome lovers As time goes by Moonlight and lovesongs never out of date Hearts full of passion, jealousy and hate Woman needs man And man must have his mate That no one can deny Its still the same old story The fight for love and glory A case of do or die The world will always welcome lovers As time goes by
Either 13 just watched Casablanca....or she thinks Gibbs was involved in a love triangle...
or she was just waxing philosophically...

David Gibbs must have fu###d up so bad, they had to fire him right away. The Broncos are taking the high road staying quiet about it. If the guy is not coaching that tells a lot about the seriousness of the firing.

I expect him to resurface as the head coach at a second tier college to try and rebuild his reputation.

I'd say it says a lot. If somebody isn't pulling their weight, or messing up, you gotta get rid of them. Some coaches lose their jobs because they won't cut dead weight. If Coyer couldn't work with Gibbs and pulled the trigger on him it sends a message to the rest of the staff to do their damn job.

I was thinking more about the post that claimed a power struggle among the other coaches then went so far as to affect game day play.

If this is indeed what went down, the guy should never be allowed on another coaching staff ever again....he gave gameplan info to the opposition and then threw the game....that's unacceptable and unexcusable.

It's my understanding that Coyer never had a say in any of these defensive coaches hirings, and the results of his promotion led to some ego issues that effectively wrecked our season. That whole episode was a huge distraction at the wrong time.

For what it's worth, we'll never get the *actual* story... Like so many stories (a suprising amount of stories) the people involved don't want it to get out, and the people close to them that know a little more don't want any leaks traced back to them. Like so many stories, plenty of news folks "know" the details but didn't want to lose their sources by going public with the information told to them "off the record" and "in confidence."
I get a small taste of some of these stories on occassion... Stuff that leaves me with my jaw in my lap, but unable to say anything because it might hurt a negotiation, or otherwise hurt the Broncos if the news were to reach the public. But these stories often come to me with the caveat that "if this gets out, they'll know where it came from, so you've got to keep this one under your vest." Drives me batty, but I love it.
This place amazes me sometimes. I can't believe it.

Good God. I never knew his antics reached that level. Why he hasn't been fined by the NFL and the Falcons I sure would like to know.
No wonder our secondary went down the tubes during the game and was never the same after it.

Wow, some of these posts are a little wild, although they all contain some truth...if only a little here & there.
David Gibbs, Defensive Line Coach Jacob Burney & Pass Rush Coach Keith Millard all, at one time or another, simply ignored defensive scheme calls from Larry Coyer in the booth.
As you might expect, much of the detail of all this is still kept in house, and, from what I understand, Shanahan gets very testy if asked about it, most recently (when I was in attendance in January) saying; "We've already said all we're going to say about that. We wish David Gibbs the best...next question"
I've heard the talk that Gibbs actually gave away schemes and game plan material to his Dad the week of the Atlanta game. All that the press could confirm was that he did talk to his Dad several times prior to the game...but he's his Dad.
If there was any evidence of such an incredibly egregious breach of confidence & league rules, Shanahan would have been obligated to report it to the league offices and no such report was ever made.
It essentially came down to personality conflicts between Gibbs, Burney, Millard & Coyer. When the dust settled, Gibbs was gone, Millard released at the end of the season, Burney, to my surprise, remains BUT, you will notice...he has a little help now...a man answering only to Coyer & Shanahan...Andre Patterson...which should create a competitive dynamic this year for sure...because one of them will be gone after '05.
Denver fields the largest coaching staff in the NFL. They are bound to step on each others toes from time to time. They just have be careful WHICH toes they step on.

I haven't had the chance to meet or watch Brewster yet SoCal, but I have heard that he's made a hell of a strong impression on Shanahan, Kubiak, Putzier & Alexander.
Everyone knows he's the guy that helped develop Antonio Gates with the Chargers, so, much is expected...perhaps even with the FA kid without the football background...forgot his name.
Brewster innovated schemes for the Charger offense that centered around red zone offenses, so I'm guessing his ideas will be integrated into Denver's plans this year...and they need it...obviously.
Haven't heard anything about Doll, although I thought he was the Special Teams coach as well as LB Asst. ...tells you how out of touch I've been with all this.
I also understated the in-fighting between the defensive coaches...labeling them personality conflicts. While there were personality conflicts for sure, the problems went much deeper into defensive philosophy...bordering on revolt at one point. Coaches are told pretty clearly they need to talk through issues between each other, and if issues remain, settle them together with Shanahan.
From what I understand, Burney did, Millard didn't even try & Gibbs denied there was any conflict, preferring to run his own show no matter who said what. That, ultimately led to his firing mid-season...an extreme rarity for Shanahan.

Yeah, Shanny hates breaking up coaching momentum and creating unneeded friction off the field. I will say this though: After they brought the hammer down and insisted that Coyer's authritah be respected, we started getting a decent amound of turnovers again. I felt like our defense overall improved as well. It might have had more to do with everyone sticking with a plan, rather than Coyer's playcalling being superior, but it did improve.
