As much as I respect the flag and everything it stands for, I see flag burning as an expression of free speech that needs to be protected. I've always felt that way. It doesn't infringe on the rights of anybody else, and nobody is physically hurt. Therefore, it's free speech in my book.

Ya.. I've always taken great pride in the fact that I live in a place where NOTHING is more sacred.. even the symbols of the country... than the freedoms those symbols represent.
Now.. a bunch of pricks who don't seem to understand what freedom REALLY means want to change all of that because they're not comfortable with it.
"I may disagree with what you say (I may disagree with you burning our flag), but I'll defend to the death your right to say it (i'll defend to the death your right to burn it)".

Agreed this is a bad idea. I was just listening to a talk radio show out of Minnesota and they were talking about this. How Rebublicans will try to use against people like Hilliary saying she is un-american if she votes against it. Then they talk about how that if they get the votes and it passes then Dems will use it to say the Rebublicans are "highjacking America". Their point was it is just a political football being punted back and forth to rally each of their base voters.
Plus, when did this become a problem? Is there a bunch of flag burnings go on that I'm missing? I've lived on this Earth, in these United States all of my 33 years and have never seen a flag burning in person in my life.

I swear that sometimes our "lawmakers" suffer from some serious cranialrectal inversion. Yes, I love my country. Yes, I love the National Ensign. However I love the ideals that this country, and the flag that represents this country more. If it takes a flag to be burned, to guarantee that personal freedoms are always protected by the government, we put in office; then so be it. Constitutional ammendment, have they lost their minds? The constitution was a contract between the government of the United States and the people. This contract was meant to protect those right sthat we are all born with, including the right to protest and assemble. If a flag gets burned in that protest, but no harm is done to my fellow citizens in the process, give me a match and a gas can. The flag stands for freedom, has for over 200 years. At this rate, it won't stand for another 200 years. :moody:

I agree with everything you're saying here.

As a veteran, I would be extremely pissed if I saw someone burning the flag, but I would still have to acknowledge the truth of your statement.

Gee let worry about taking away are our freedoms, while SS, Medicaid, Medicare run out of money. Forget the Chinese are refusing to play fair in the economic arena. Forget that North Korea is problem, forget the wounded vets need help; we got other stuff to do for political power.

And if you watch cable news, you'll never know any of these things are happening (but you'll know all there is to know about Michael Jackoffson and the runaway bride.)

Amendment I
Congress shall make no law(They should have stopped right there, it would have made for less headache now) respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
If Old Glory burns, she protects the right of unabridged free speech. If there is no mass riot, and Old Glory burns, she has protected the right of the people to peaceably assemble. If Old Glory burns, she is an effective way of petitioning the government for a redress of grievances.
As a Veteran, it pisses me off when they show the American Flag being burned by some islamicfacist, or in Europe, or wherever in the world. Then I remember the preamble to the Declaration of Independence, and that our forefathers believed that all men (and women too) were born with inalienable rights. Not just American Christian men and women, but all men and women throughout the world. You burn my flag out of fear. Fear of what she represents. A symbol of Traitors who believed that personal freedoms meant more than life itself.
I think Washington, the Blue and the Red have forgotten that.

That why this even more of waste of time, since there are states that will not vote for it. Session is out in August and Congress sit on their asses.

Yes I agree, we have a problem with SS, Medicaid, Medicare, VA benefits, poverty, hunger, Aids, crack, the list goes on. However, you give one freedom away, what about the next one, and the next one, and the one after that. Pretty soon, you have no longer a democracy, you no longer have property ownership, America will cease to be what those Traitors believed in so much. America will cease to be the oppressors of tyranny that landed on Omaha beach. America will become the oppressor to its own people, and every ounce of the freedom we have preached about will go away.

I was being sarcastic, I believe this amendment is waste of time, and should be stop on general principle. The list was all the other problem congress should be focused on.

The ironic thing is that if i excpress my right to free speech-expression and kicked the ass of someone who was burning the flag...I'd be in jail.
I do find it odd that you libs will allow our national flag to be burned and desecrated in the name of free speech, expression, or call such acts art...but God forbid someone piss on the Koran, huh?

This is what you get post 9-11, I'm a patriot, etc, etc... As has been already pointed out here, our country is built on freedom of speech, and became the greatest country on the planet because of our freedoms.
This bunch of lawmakers currently in power are one of the worst groups I've ever had the displeasure to watch, listen to and be disgusted by.

This part of your post is not very smart. Kicking someone's ass is not free speech, it is assult.

You should have just posted this part, that I can agree with to a point. But no totally, because I still think you should have the right to burn the flag. IMO, it is stupid and offensive, but I support their right to be stupid and offensive.

Errant with the view from the lunatic right-wing fringe.
1) The right to free speech guaranteed by the First Amendment doesn't include the right to kick someone's ass.
2) "You libs" doesn't cover everyone who has posted on this thread.
3) Your flag/Koran analogy doesn't hold water insofar as the constitutionality of desecrating the Koran was never the issue - the geopolitical consequences of such an act was the issue.
