View Full Version : Question for the gamers, which system?
Master___Pain

I am looking at getting a gaming system soon. I had the PS2 but got rid of it a few years back. I have never played Xbox. I am mostly interested in sports games, maybe an occasional first player type game like metal gear or something similar.
All input is appreciated.

Man, each one has advantages and disadvantages and really, you are not going to be dissappointed no matter which one you go for. I went for the X-Box becuase quite simply, its an American company and I have been boycotting Sony and their over-priced goods for a decade now. However, if you decide on a PS2 you wont be sorry about it. The games are almost as good and there are tons more for them.

Yeah I would wait both next gen versions of PS3 and X-box360 will be coming soon, In fact I have been thinking of quitting the console systems altogether because EA sports have a monopoly on NFL and College football I think the prices will be large for these games. The PC version of these game are usually ten to twenty bucks cheaper, and you don't have to subscribe to an online gaming service like x-box live

The movie function is not important to me. I have a good dvd player now.
They are both around 149.99 correct? I was also thinking of buying a used system from a EB games or something similar.
Aside from personal bias, I hate ____ because they do ____ I just need an assesment of the actual gaming system.
I was a huge fan of the EA College FB game series when I had my playstation and PS2, I liked it better than Maddden infact.
What about the PSP? If there where a netflix type way of getting the movies and games for it I might be inclined to try it.
Again, thanks for the input.

PS2 is popular, XBox is better. No question about it. But, if you are looking for sports games you have to go with the PS2. Not because the games are better, but the controls on the PS2 are much better for sports because of the four shoulder buttons (L1,L2,R1,R2). I don't know why XBox never made a "sports" control that had the shoulder buttons. I play Madden, and I can never find the black and white buttons without looking at them. In a fast paced game there is no time for that.
I'd take Xbox in all non-sports games. It's not even close. But when it comes to sports, go with the PS2.

The PS2 system is worth the money just for that game...That is good stuff. The game play on College FB is definitely better and smoother than Madden...Not sure why they don't just copy the game play.
I've only dabbled with XBox so I can't say much about it but as long as EA makes sports games for the system then it probably doesn't matter much as to which system it is...

Actually it is. The lines on the players are far less pixelated on X-box than PS2, the motion is a bit smoother as well, even though the bones of the engine are the same.
There are other benifits, like ESPN on X-box has the weekly sports center replay where it plays back all the plays of that week with Berman yacking, rather than just showing pictures on the PS2 version.

X-box, no question. It's just better than a PS2 in amost every way and it can be modded so you can download an emulator to your harddrive to play old NES, SNES, Genesis, PS1, and N64 games if you download them. PS2 does have some very nice games that you can't get on xbox though, and better controllers...but thats about it really. If your willing to wait the xbox 360 is going to be sooooooo worth. I think its suppose to have free xbox live?

From what I understand, there is going to be some form of free X-Box Live! on the 360, but there will be Silver and Gold packages too that offer more for premium costs. I think gold is expected to remain the same as the current bill for X-Box Live! at 49.99 per year.

No kiddin it is crazy how I can whup up on someone on my ps2 but when I play the same game on X-box I am always getting sacked cause I am fighting with the controller, it just doesn't feel right, I saw an adapter at Wal-mart that will allow your ps2 controller to work with a x-box.

Xbox is head-and-shoulders above the PS2 when it comes to graphics. There are some 'PS2 only' titles like Final Fantasy (if that matters to you). When games are released on all 3 platforms the Xbox version blows the PS2 version away every time. Most of the 'big' titles are released on multiple platforms, except for stuff like FF (PS2 only), Halo (XBox only), Zeldo (Nintendo only), etc.
The Xbox 2 (called the Xbox 360) is scheduled for release in November. I will be getting one. It is 100% HD (which goes well with my HD TV), will play my current XBox games, and should rock. There are disputes on which is better (XBox 360 vs. PS3) - each camp is saying they have the better system. From what I have read PS3 has a slightly faster chip but Xbox 360 has 3 chips.

I am not sure but I think that the College game runs of the same engine that Madden is bulit only it is always behind Madden, for example this years NCAA football will be similar in play to Madden 04, graphics and all that stuff, I think i read that somewhere.

The PS3 beats the X-Box 360 in only one category, floating point calculations. Everything else the 360 is better than the PS3 on, including graphics, raw processing power (3 cores compared to 1 in the PS3) and memory.

MS claims it will play the 'major' games. Due to a different chipset they are building per game emulation into the system. I am positive it will play Halo, Halo 2, Splinter Cell, etc. It might not play the lesser known games. But everything I have read said it would play most games.

The original Xbox controller was the size of a brick (felt like one too). They then released a smaller, more contoured controller for the Japanese market (I don't know if maybe Japanese gamers have smaller hands?)
Anyways, people seemed to prefer that one - and it become the 'standard' after a certain time. If your buddy bought the system early in its life he could have the original (which some call the Duke). If he bought it later he might have the 'S'.
The Duke looks like this:
http://www.llamma.com/xbox/ShoppingCart/original_microsoft_xbox.htm
The 'S' looks like this:
http://www.xbox.com/en-us/hardware/xboxcontroller-s.htm
My point - the 'S' is much better (in my opinion) - I can't play with that brick controller.

No, the 360 will be fully backwards compatible now. After E3, MS saw the desire for this to happen and that it would be a major decision making process in which console to buy so they are adding built in emulators to emulate previous X-Box games that are not compatible with the new ATI graphics card. In the beginning, there will be some of the oldest XBox games that may not be able to be played but updates for emulations will come as warranted by the users. Freely downloadable to your HD from X-Box Live!

Prices havent been disclosed but odds are opening cost will be 300-400 bucks and heard that PS3 will probably open at 450, but a lot depends on how well MS does.
This is really the tricky part of the console war right now. If the 360 does better at launch than Sony thinks, they are going to have a rough ride. MS plans on releasing Halo 3 on or near the date of the release of the PS3 to help curb sales for the Sony console.
I will fork out 400 to get one. The thing has more processing power than 3 of my laptops combined and I got a really nice laptop. I paid 3K for it, so 400 for something 3 times as powerful is a bargain IMO.

Exactly, I had my Nintendo for years and years before I had to upgrade to the Genesis, and ran that forever until my first PS then PS2, these console's are coming out to rapidly, just another way to bleed us dry. I don't know why you cannot upgrade your exsisting console instead of buying a whole new system. I am seriously thinking about just buying all the games on PC it's cheaper.

Even with the S control it's still a problem for sports games because of the black and white buttons. It's easy to find the L2 and R2 buttons on the PS2 control. If you are a serious gamer those buttons are very important for sports games. I can't play Madden without them. On XBox, the black and white buttons do the same things, but I can never find them.
The S control is great for all other games. It's a good control, and much better than that boat that they first came out with. It's just not great for sports games.
Overall I'm XBox all the way. It's a much better system. But PS2 has it beat in sports because of the control.

Yeah, I used to play Puzzle Fighter all the time. In fact I used to have a MAME emulator on my PC with about 50 games. From Rastan Saga to 1943 to pacman and Ghouls and Ghosts and more. Then my girl was cleaning the cpu and didn't save the files, but saved the actual shortcut! I had downloaded all those games for free. Damn that pisses me off!
I was the **** at Golden Eye. About 6 years ago me and a bunch of friends took a sheet of acid and we played Golden Eye 4 player split screen for about 14 hours straight. Amazingly I never lost a game. I ****ed up a lot of people with those mine though! And yes I've blow myself to pieces a few times after forgetting where the heck I put those mines.
On people complaining about the XBOX controllers, I have to agree I hate those damn things. I have played with them at friends houses and I can never find the black and white buttons without looking.
The new consol controllers for PS3 and XBOx 360 are going to be wireless. And Microsoft took away those stupid white and black buttons and went with the shoulder buttons similar to Sony's.

I never owned an XBOX. Just a PS2 and Gamecube. PS2 has a great selection of games. I have made my decision on the XBOX 360 to be my next gaming system. The 360 blows PS3 away in almost every catagory except variety of games. And I had heard the 360 will be compatable with all the xbox games, not just a few.
Yesterday I bought Winning Eleven 8. That game is awesome. If you like soccor games this is the one to get.

Normally I'd agree with you. But in the console wars Xbox is like Sega. When the 8-bit started Sega had the better color and contrast, but NES had the better games. When Dreamcast came out and had the better color, contrast, and light effects, but PS2 came out and had better titles. Xbox is the same thing. Xbox has the better color, contrast and hardware and still PS2 still beats it in sales.
