My younger sister just graduated from HS and is getting ready to go to college. She pretty much has her mind made up and wants to attend Devry (Sp?) B/c she can finish in 2 years. I've done a little research and I'm not too impressed with the school thus far. Has anybody on the board or anybody that you folks know attended this school? And, if they did attend how did they fair after they graduated. That is, was it difficult to find a job in the field of your degree? Was your/their degree viewed the same as a degree from a 4 year school or even a smaller Jr. College? I'm also somewhat turned off by the price of the school. I know Texas A&M for example comes out to nearly $44k for ones degree. My other sister is a Sr. this year and will be graduating from A&M in Dec. Devry or Devrie or however you spell it wants $25k per year. They say it takes 2-2.5 years to complete their degree programs. My sister wants to be a CPA and looks like she may be able to finish in two years...... if everything goes smoothly. She'll also be taking 12 hours per semester, but somehow she goes 3 sems. per year. 36 hours per year is a lot. $50k for a 2 year school that doesn't come close to a UT or A&M is an awful lot as well. What do you guys/gals think?
Thanks for the help. I'll have her check this thread out after a few replies are posted. Thanks again!

Does Devry have a secret handshake? (very important)

I would definately push her to a 4 year school. I don't have any facts to back this up, besides my own perception of things, but I can't think of a situation where this 2 year deal would ever be viewed on the same level as a 4-year degree from an accredited college.
Like I said, I don't have any facts or stats to back that up, but yeah, Devy, ITT Tech, those types of deals, don't seem all that great to me.

Dervy (Da-v-fry) is a second hand college...like ITT Tech and Eco-college...it's not going to net here a good job. She can do better for less at an in state school but it will take 4 years. Plus it's highly unlikely she'll be a CPA anyway. Most people on average don't know what they want to do with their life until the age of 26.

I take it that she lives in Texas? Consdiering you're comparing Devry to Texas and A&M, I figure she is from texas and wants to stay in state for college.
Those 3 semesters that you're talking of, are 3 trimesters, msot colleges over the past few years have gotten away from 2 semesters and have rather gone with 3 trimesters. Semesters are 2 15-16 week courses, trimesters are 3 9-11 week courses.
As for school of chocie outside of Devry, I really can't help if she wants to stay in state. I did visit a good amount of campuses during my senior year, but they were all in either Ohio, West Virginia, or Michigan(not Michigan U though, would never even think about it.)

That's pretty much what I've been hearing Garcia.
Yes she wants to stay in state and in Houston as a matter of fact. That really doesn't limit her that much though. She can choose between Rice, Baylor, UofH, A&M, UT, St. Thomas, San Jac, and Devry as well as a few others I'm sure. There are a lot of choices, she just seems to think that she can start her career faster with this Devry thing.
Is Devry in most cities or is this a Houston thing? Thanks for all of the responses folks! Specially the handshake.... GOOD ONE! :D

Devry is everywhere, we have one in Columbus I believe, and New Brunswick, NJ is their "main" campus of them all.

So what do you know about Devry DF?
To put this in perspective, my little sister started receiving letters from Duke when she was a sophmore. She could easily go to any school based on academics alone. She's carried above a 4.0 (4 pt scale) her entire 4 years of HS. She placed 2nd in Houston and top 10 in Texas in their annual Math and Accounting State Comp. She's a smart kid but I think she is seeing a quick and easy path to a lucrative career. If I thought this school was going to actually challenge her I'd be all for it, but it seems like more of a Pay for your Degree type of program than anything else.

Honestly, I don't know much about Devry, one of my classmates attended it for 2 years, but we were never really friends in HS so I never reaslly talk to him about it. He went down to Columbus-Devry for an IT degree, haven't heard of him since really, but he ahs stuck with it so he must enjoy it somewhat and thinks that this will be a good place to launch his career.
With those credentials, your sis can and should go elsewhere, a bachelors degree from a major University pretty much seals the deal on a successful career. She'd be able to go anywhere with those grades, Univerisities would give her the scholarship to atend their school, plus Texas has a handful of big time schools. She shoudl really look into some state colleges and maybe she'll find it more intriguing.

Take the 4 year college opition if it avaible. The Devery will not help in the long run, future employers would prefer established school, plus there is a lot more to the college thing then just a degree.

I tend to agree with you guys. I'd much rather see her go to a 4 year school. Hopefully she'll change her mind and atleadt think about UofH or Rice or something like that.... though Rice is high dollar as well!

This is the way I see it BM. If the school has commercials that run during Jerry Springer and Judge Judy, I'd stay away.

She has the oppurtunity to goto Rice or UT & she is considering Devry? Am I missing something?

My .02 is a friend went to devry and he is still paying back money for his tuition. To spend the same amount in 2 years as in 4 is ludicrous. Go to a 4 year where jobs will look at you more, and plus, my friend isnt even working with comps anymore. And he cant find a job in that area. So having a 4 year degree never hurts.

Is it all about her career? Doesn't she want to have fun and enjoy the college life for a few years?

Do a google search on Devry. I seem to remember a little while back they were heavily investigated for either misrepresenting tuition or misappropriating tuition. If I remember right there were "raids" on several campuses removing all computers, files, bookkeeping programs, etc. I don't know if I ever heard the outcome.
In state schooling is such a bargain in Texas. My daughter got an Architect degree from the University of Houston and she could've gone just about anywhere. But they have a great program there and for the price, well, as the one paying the tuition I really can't complain.

Some of my friends here at UT are lucky enough to be in the Professional Program of Accounting (#1 accounting program in US) at Mccombs School of Business and have 60k+ jobs waiting on them when they graduate.......and none of them want to graduate. College is awesome.. Why else would Matt Leinart stay in school instead of being the #1 pick in the NFL draft?

You can't compare a 2 year tech school with a 4 year college.
My degree is in CS and while DeVry would be a 'step up' over nothing, it isn't close to a 4 year degree.

Devry (and the like) are technical colleges meant for preparing you for a career in a particular field.
Whether you go there or to a 4 year school really depends. The most important thing is to get a degree that means something, no matter where you go. A degree in a good field is valuable at either school. The most important thing is to have a plan for getting the degree and putting it to use, whether it be apprenticeships, people you know, whatever. One thing to consider is that most 4 year degrees are pretty broad and require further education (Masters) to get really techncial in learning a trade, skill or job. Anything in the college of business or liberal arts is ususally pretty general as an undergrad. The college of engineering offers a more direct college to the work force path.
Having said all that, I will say that people that attend 2 year colleges typically pay more (compared to the quality of education and number of courses) and generally don't do as well. Not doing well probably says more about their ambitions and how they put their degree to use than the quality of the school though.

And no matter what DeVry or any other tech school says, Employers classify grads of those schools much differently than those that go to known universities. It's very hard not to be pigeon holed as only a PC Tech, Secretary, Diesel Mechanic, etc. with a Devry type degree.

Certainly a fair point, but it really depends on what you want. Not everyone aspires to be a CEO.

Agree, but I would also contend that most 20 year olds do not know what they want to do the rest of their careers so it is important for them to prepare for some flexibility.
I started college as a chemistry major and could see myself doing nothing else. 30+ years later, I can' imagine life as a chemist.

If she wants to be a CPA, she best forget about DeVry. She needs to attend a school that is known for Business Administration and or Finance. There is a lot of financial assistance for those who score well on the ACT or SAT and has graduated in the top of their HS class (if money is a problem.)

A degree from Devry will get her a higher dollar per hour rate.
A degree from a real university will get her an annual salary.

Very true
A 4 year degree will allow for much greater flexibility, plus she can pursue a graduate degree later if she chooses
