Jeff Legwold, of the Rocky Mountain News, reports Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan said he is looking for WR Jerry Rice to come in and compete for the team during the upcoming year. However, because Rice will be 43 during the season, Shanahan also realizes that guarantees cannot be expected.

Jeff Legwold, of the Rocky Mountain News, reports Denver Broncos WR Rod Smith remains the team leader despite the team bringing in WR Jerry Rice during the offseason. Rice is wearing jersey No. 19 rather than the No. 80 he has worn his entire career, a number which is also worn by Smith. Smith has not offered up the number and Rice has not asked for it. Rice said he has too much respect for Smith to request it.

He said he knows year after year that he has to prove himself all over again. He is hopeful the Broncos younger receivers will pick up on how he prepares during the week, which he approaches as if it were a game situation.
