Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor, described as a "person of interest" in an assault case, turned himself in to Miami-Dade County police on Saturday, ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reported. Taylor has been charged with aggravated assault with a firearm, a felony, and simple battery.
The assault happened Wednesday night and shots were fired, police spokesman Mary Walters said. No one was injured.
According to a police statement, Taylor pointed a gun at an unidentified person Wednesday during a dispute over two all-terrain vehicles he claimed were stolen. Taylor left the scene but returned about 10 minutes later and punched one person.
Police had been looking for Taylor since Friday.
"We have just been made aware of a potential situation in Miami regarding Sean Taylor," the Redskins said in a statement Saturday night. "The representatives for Taylor are keeping us informed as to the developments of the situation. There is nothing we can add to the process at this time."
Taylor's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, did not return a phone message left by The Associated Press late Saturday.
Another man, Charles Elwood Caughman, threatened and chased another victim with a baseball bat, police said. Caughman, 19, was arrested later that day and charged with aggravated assault.
Taylor, who wants a new contract, has been working out in Miami despite pleas from coach Joe Gibbs to join the team in voluntary workouts at their home base in suburban Washington. He signed a seven-year, $18 million deal as the No. 5 overall draft pick in the 2004 draft.
The former Miami Hurricanes standout has had a tempestuous start to his NFL career.
He has fired two agents, was fined for skipping one day of the NFL's mandatory rookie symposium and was accused of spitting on a player during a game at Cincinnati, although he was not punished because the league said there was no video evidence.
He was also charged with drunken driving in October, when he was pulled over at 2:45 a.m. after attending a birthday party for receiver Rod Gardner. Those charges were dismissed in January.
Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

I get the feeling that they are VERY close to the edge now. One key injury like last year and I think they are done.
I can't think of another teams 1st rounder next year that I would prefer Denver to have.
If they pull out of this tailspin this year and finish over 500 I would vote Gibbs for coach of the year.

I don't know, did Ray Ray get suspended for helping to cover up a double homicide?
Taylor should be done until charges are dropped or he's found not guilty, he shot at someone.

Wow, I heard about this, but didn't realize the events were as serious as they appear to be.
If Taylor is convicted, he really could face years in prison.
Then again, Jamal Lewis was caught red-handed making a drug deal on his phone & he basically skates on a 6-month hand slap.
Separation of the classes I suppose...as it is, has been and always will be.

The redskins potential problems
1. QB issues _Ramsey vs. Campbell
2. The star LB pissed because feels that team cheat out of $6M, coming off injury
3. The starting RB that doesn’t fit the style of team
4. Oline that might suck up the middle
5. Shawn Spring is only proven CB
6. A bunch of midget WRs.
7. No pass rush.
8. Your number #1 pick last going off the deep end

Taylor Turns Himself In to Miami-Dade Police
Redskins Safety Was Charged With Aggravated Assault, Simple Battery According to Two Reports
By Jason La Canfora
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, June 5, 2005; Page E01
ESPN.com and the Miami Herald reported that Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor turned himself in to the Miami-Dade Police Department last night and was charged with a felony count of aggravated assault with a firearm as well as simple battery, but police officials would not confirm that and continued to say that Taylor was a person of interest in this case.
The Herald said Taylor turned himself in, accompanied by his lawyer, about 10 p.m. last night at the Cutler Ridge district police station and was taken to Turner Guilford Knight correctional facility.
Reports say safety Sean Taylor turned himself in Saturday to answer questions from police regarding an incident that occured Wednesday in Miami. (Jonathan Newton - The Washington Post)
Redskins 2005
Redskins safety Sean Taylor reportedly is charged with one count of aggravated assault and one count of simple battery stemming from an incident in Miami.
Taylor, 22, selected with the fifth overall pick in the 2004 draft, and a friend were at the scene of an incident involving a stolen car and shots being fired on Wednesday night, a police spokeswoman said on Friday, and was wanted for questioning in the case, although the department would not stipulate if he was a suspect, victim or witness. As of 1 a.m. this morning police officials were still calling him a person of interest and would not confirm any other information or elaborate on the subject.
Several police staff members spoken to late Saturday night said they had been instructed by the department's media relations department that no new information was available and that they would issue a news release if or when developments warranted. A source at the Miami-Dade Correctional Facility said that as of 12:45 this morning Taylor's name did not appear in their arrest information, but added that it could take several hours for that to occur if someone was in the process of being questioned by police.
Taylor's mother, Donna Junor, said that she did not know if her son was being questioned and still had not heard from him recently. "I'm not aware of that," she said when reached at her house at about 11:30 p.m. "I don't know anything about that."
The Washington Redskins had not acknowledged the situation until after 11 p.m. last night, when the team released a statement saying: "We have just been made aware of a potential situation in Miami regarding Sean Taylor. The representatives for Taylor are keeping us informed as to the developments of the situation. There is nothing we can add to the process at this time."
Taylor's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, has not returned repeated phone calls for the past two days.
Police officials have said no one was injured in this incident. One police source said Friday that the scene took place in a residential area in south Florida and shots were fired into a stolen vehicle, but the nature of Taylor's presence there and any involvement in the case was unclear. At that time police said they did not know if the stolen vehicle had belonged to Taylor or his friend or someone else.
Police investigators had contacted Taylor's family and league officials hoping to find him, but several of Taylor's family members said on Friday that they did not know where he has been. His father, Pedro, is chief of police in Florida City, but was unwilling to speak to this matter when reached on Friday, directed reporters to call Junor. Taylor has not been at Redskins Park since the end of the season in January and has had no contact with team officials, refusing to return calls from Coach Joe Gibbs and his staff.
Taylor, who left the University of Miami after his junior season, has spent much of the offseason in south Florida, where he makes his home, while skipping the club's voluntary workouts, with Gibbs expressing his disappointment in that decision on numerous occasions.
While Taylor, who attended the University of Miami, had a strong rookie season on the field, he was plagued by problems off of it.
Taylor was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated in October, suspended for one game by the team, and then later acquitted. He fired his agent twice before returning to Rosenhaus due to unhappiness with the six-year deal -- worth a maximum of $40 million -- the he had signed under previous representation. Taylor was fined $25,000 by the league after leaving its mandatory rookie symposium without permission and a member of the Cincinnati Bengals accused Taylor of spitting on him during a game last season, although the NFL could not find evidence of the claim after investigating it.

it looks pretty bad for Sean right now. There was some commentary on the Hurricanes board and now on the Skins board about Florida's 10-20-Life law regarding felonies although there is a little dispute about whether it applies to all felonies or just some. This is pretty serious though either way. Its really a shame because he has more ability than even Ronnie Lott and he very well could have thrown it away. We'll see.

Well Denver certainly looks like the got the right Miami player in the draft last year. KWII has missed two seasons already and Taylor might miss the rest of his career before it ever gets started.
Wait, its just the legal system and not injury. I'm sure he walks with more hand slappings and then sits out the year in a contract dispute while getting another arrest for disorderly conduct and resisiting arrest. Yeah, that sounds more like it! Damn socal, the U boys are making FSU look like a seminary these days

What burns me the most about that, is that Jamal Lewis was able to serve his time during the offseason. The justice system made sure it maneuvered the sentence around Jamal's Schedule. I mean what does the Justice System think Lewis is, a politician or something.
Jamal Lewis needs to serve his time during the season, and get docked that year's salary to boot. Complete BS!!

Jayson Williams blew an innocent man in half with a shotgun. He lied to the police and conspired to cover up the crime with his scumbag friends, most of whom eventually testified against him in court. He had a lengthy prior history of violence and reckless behavior with firearms. Not only did he walk, he practically signed autographs for starstruck jurors on his way out of the courtroom.
Sean Taylor will walk with a slap on the wrist, but he'll be even more bitter towards the world because lawyers will have taken most of his money.

I am still waiting to hear Portis' spin on this one though. He hadn't been hanging with any of the Miami guys that were in Coral Gables to legitimately work out. He had only gone to the UM weight room once all spring and that was to play basketball, not work out with Andrew Swasey and the former-Canes he trains.
Something is obviously very wrong in Taylor's mind right now. From not returning Gibbs' calls to not working out in Coral Gables to this idiotic incident, Taylor must have gone crazy since the end of the '04 season. It was common knowledge around UM that in his three years there Taylor was a decent kid, albeit aloof. It looks like that aloofness has manifested into something worse. I still don’t get why the millionaire son of a respected police chief would resort to what Taylor did over a stolen ATV. It doesn’t make any sense, but I guess that’s life.

News
Redskins' safety Sean Taylor was released from a Florida jail on Saturday night after posting a $16,500 bond. Earlier in the day, Taylor was arrested on a felony charge of aggravated assault with a firearm. The Associated Press notes that the police report includes a claim that Taylor pointed a gun at an unidentified person on Wednesday after arguing over two all-terrain vehicles the second-year player claims were stolen. The 22 year-old defensive back left the scene but returned 10 minutes later and allegedly punched one person.
Views
The second-year safety has been holding out of offseason workouts in boycott of the seven-year deal he signed before last season. One can only hope that Taylor's latest arrest will cause him to drop his demands for a new contract and report to training headquarters while he still has some dignity.

Taylor's latest legal trouble, a felony charge of aggravated assault with a firearm in Miami, led the Redskins on Monday to issue a statement excusing the safety from the rest of the team's off-season meetings and practices.
"As an organization, the Redskins believe that it is in Sean's best interest to focus on his personal and legal issues at this time," the statement said.
Taylor turned himself in to police Saturday night after a three-day search. Police said Taylor pointed a gun at an unidentified person Wednesday during a dispute over two vehicles he claimed were stolen. Taylor also punched one person, according to the police statement, leading to a second charge of simple battery.
Taylor, 22, is free on $16,500 bond with an arraignment date scheduled for June 24. His football career is in serious jeopardy if he is convicted of the felony charge: It carries a minimum sentence of three years as a result of a crackdown on firearms-related crimes passed by Florida's legislature several years ago.
Taylor has been the only unexcused absentee from the Redskins voluntary off-season workout program and has not returned phone calls from coach Joe Gibbs, who several times expressed disappointment that Taylor was not participating. Last week, before the arrest, Gibbs did not know of Taylor's activities or whether Taylor would attend the mandatory minicamp on June 17-19.
Now, Taylor needn't bother.
"We have informed Sean's agent that, as of today, Sean is excused from participating in the remainder of the club's voluntary off-season workout program and the upcoming mandatory minicamp," the Redskins statement said.
Taylor's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, declined to comment.
The statement said that the Redskins will discuss any further action with NFL officials, who wait until the legal process is completed before disciplining a player. The statement does not address what will happen if Taylor's situation is not resolved before the start of training camp on July 31.
Redskins spokesman Karl Swanson declined to elaborate.
Taylor's offseason absence is just one of a laundry list of headaches the talented player from the University of Miami has caused the team since the Redskins chose him with the No. 5 overall pick a year ago. Gibbs has repeatedly call the selection "one of the most researched things" ever, but Taylor has instead repeatedly tested Joe Gibbs' No. 1 rule for players: "Don't embarrass the Redskins."
Taylor fired his agent the week the Redskins selected him, keeping his contract situation in limbo all summer until he hired a new one. He then fired the new one because he wasn't happy with his seven-year, $18 million deal. He also was fined for missing one day of the NFL's mandatory rookie symposium.
Taylor was charged with drunken driving in October after attending a late-night birthday party for receiver Rod Gardner. He missed practice after the arrest and was benched for the following week's game.
The charges were dismissed in January.
When he was on the field, Taylor was a formable presence. He started 13 games and had 89 tackles, four interceptions, one sack and forced two fumbles. He finished fourth in voting for the AP's NFL defensive rookie of the year.

It's going to be very interesting how Gibbs deals with this situation. In his past tenure and his latest one, his most hallowed rule for players was and is "Don't embaress the Redskins"
I wonder if Gibbs will continue to follow his brand of football coaching (he suspended Taylor last year for an incident I believe) or will he cave in to Danny Snyder's demands of buttkissing his players.
I hope Taylor does get treated fairly, in other words, goes through the legal system due to the nature of his crime rather than his celebrity but I doubt that happens.
It seems one of the perks of having an NFL career is being able to use "live" target practice with nominal repercussions. What a fu**in' joke.

I wish Gibbs would just walk away from that whole mess right now. He has no credible front office support and a leadership vacuum among the players.

Sean, as talented a safety as he is, simply isn't worth the aggravation for the Redskins. His act has gone from juvenile (blowing off part of the league's mandatory rookie symposium) to embarrassing (his difficulties reciting the alphabet when pulled over for suspected drunken driving) to defiant (boycotting voluntary offseason workouts) to, perhaps, criminal (if there's any validity to these charges in Miami that include aggravated assault with a firearm).
