My kids used to fight over stuff like that. I used the same method. The tv's went away for a couple weeks. Amazing now they seem to be able to solve their problems without me getting involved.

Ha! I had a heck of a time explaining why my son could not say the words 'piece of sh*t' when something would not work like he wanted. Then the wife explained how I do it all the time out in the garage.

While Spider's kids' video game collection sounds similar to the stuff in our house, there are very few arguments here most of the time and those that do erupt are usually settled pretty quickly. A gentle reminder that there are two toilets and two toilet brushes in the house quiets things down fast (trust me, no kid wants to be assigned the task of cleaning a toilet... ;D).

Exactly... and by choosing the most objectionable task possible, you usually only have to follow through once or twice to make the mere threat effective in stopping a squabble in its tracks. Ha!

Get rid of all the TVs but one or two. Try having the entire family agree on what programs will be watched during the evenings. No MTV, reality shows or that kind of crap for the kids (or adults for that matter). Get rid of all the video play crapola stuff. Worst thing ever invented for trying to raise kids. Make them find things to do outdoors.
I doubt you will follow this advice, hardly any parents do these days, but it will benefit the kids and the entire family if you did :)

This is how it is in our house. I too, will not allow video games. I've seen my nephews and so many other kids just turn into chubby, inactive potatoes on them. Plus we only have 1 TV, and I'm not giving up my time for them to use it for that crap.
I still think they watch too much TV, but I am incredibly strict about what I let them watch. They'd much rather be outside any day, anyway.
My daughter's second grade class just had something they call a bike rodeo. It's basically a skills class and safety stuff mixed with some fun stuff. These are 8 year old kids. There was one little boy who didn't even know how to ride a bike at all! I felt sorry for the poor kid, but I just cannot fathom that. My kids have been on bikes since they were tiny and they love them. All I did when I was a kid was ride my bike. These are the kinds of things I wonder about when I see stuff like this. I don't know this kid's situation, except that he is a very smart kid...but I also have a feeling he is one of the little gamers that abound so much these days.
I'm not anti-TV/video games, that's just not the way I want my kids raised. I didn't mean to come across harsh to those who have that stuff. :)

Oh your poor children, having to slave away cleaning bathrooms and losing TV priviledges. I never put any kind of restrictions on my children, because it would hurt their feelings and stifle their emotional development... Wait a second, there's the police at the door bringing Johnny home again. Hilarious!
You know, I think that is why I like to hang out on the Mane, because there are alot of good people here. I see a bunch of good parents who are trying to make a difference in their children's world. I thought at times I was the only one who make my kids clean their rooms, and do dishes and thier own laundry, as well as watch their manners in public.

Gosh, sometimes I wonder if the parents themselves were taught manners the way I see kids acting these days. I guess some people just don't put stock in the whole good manners thing. I am very strict about good manners, and I get compliments on how well behaved my children are....in public that is. Then when we get home, all the time having to be good has gotten to them, and they let their inner demon out. :D

I'm the same way, if they are at the house and in "our environment," they can let their hair down, and like I tell them. If there's no blood involved, I don't want to hear it. However, when they are in public, and especially around adults, it's yes ma'am/sir, no ma'am/sir, please and thank you. I spent two years on the drill field with knuckleheads that their mommies and daddies didn't put up those simple boundaries. The payoff, for my children, is that they always receive praise and comments from adults on how nice it is to have them around, and how well behaved they are. My son got accused of some wrong doing at school, and the principal dismissed the allegation (the real culprit was found two days later), because of his simple manners. I don't get why some of these "touchy feely" parents don't get it. ??? An ex-girlfriend of mine, is having all kinds of problems with her 12 year-old girl, and wanted to know my secret. I gently reminded her that it was the thing we broke up over a couple years prior, she didn't approve of my parenting techniques and putting degrees of expectations on how they behave.

LOL Yeah, he's different from my kids then... although they have cleaned the toilet on occasion, they have never wanted to do it. LOL
As to the video game/TV/activity thing, it isn't an issue for us... the kids have all liked physical outdoor activities like bike riding, sports, and fishing. They're all height/weight proportionate and some people might even describe one son and one daughter as "too slender" (no eating disorders either; thank goodness; just fast metabolism).
My philosophy is that if the kids' behavior is such that I enjoy their company, other people are likely to enjoy their company as well. And as others here have said, it's not uncommon for our friends to remark that they're very well-behaved.

I know a guy that the first time the boyfriend came over he asked him to drive him to 7-11 to get some cash. Boyfriend thought oh boy hes gonna give me "the talk". Nothing was said all the way to 7-11 the father went in and came out a few minutes later with at brown paper bag he had hidden in his back pocket. He proceeded to jump into the car yelling GO GO GO I just knocked the place off. The boyfriend flew back to his house scared to death. Obviously the father had not knocked off the store Ha! The daughter was not impressed in the least.

I've already had my child catastrophe story and I hope its the only one, damnit.
When my son was 3, he decided to take the car for a ride. It was the 4th of July and we were just getting ready to leave my mom's. It was 1:30 in the morning, and we had put the kids in the car and gone back inside for something. All the sudden, I saw my husband go running and yell, "OH ****!" I knew immediately what had happened. Unfortunately, her driveway is just one huge, SHORT hill. He pulled it out of gear and it coasted right down the hill, quickly, I might add...straight into the neighbors shed. It completely trashed their whole shed and the whole rear of my van. He was ok, thank God, but man I was pissed!
Plus, we had to go wake up my mom's neighbors and tell them what had happened. Turns out most of his shed was filled with computer stuff. Oh joy. They were incredibly nice about it though.
It's funny....to this day, no one will leave their car doors unlocked when my son is around.

I would have been fine with all 3 girls. Some days I wonder if he will make it through his whole childhood. The kid really knows how to get to me! Everyone tells me that I will be happy I have him when they all hit the teenage years and the girls start in. Again, that's just something I'd rather not think about right now.
