Ok, so its been about freaking ungodly hot here in SoCal already this spring and we topped temps in the 100's for 4 of the past 7 days. Anyway, as always, just when you dont expect it, the AC cuts out! Horror!
So, what I need to know is, my Lennox unit at my pad has crapped out after only two years of service. I am getting airflow (albeit warm) and I can hear the compressor clicking outside but the return air is coming out with regular air. I've checked the coils for ice, checked the fuses, and made sure there wasnt a short in my thermostat.
Could my refrigerant have already needed a recharge after only two years of service? What the hell else could it be?
Second question, how much does a recharge of freon cost usually (including the service call by HVAC tech?) I dont want to get crushed financially over this but I suspect I am going to drop a few Benjamin's over this :cuss:

I suspect the refrigerant too, but I'm no expert.
What's the life expectancy of an A/C out there? Is this a large model or one that costs $89 new at Home Depot?

The model is meant to serve a double level home of 2000 sq feet I believe. It was new along with the house two years ago but we frequently had to run that sucker at nights since it gets so hot here in the summer. Freaking desert climate...

IF its your refrigerant, then you have a leak somewhere where its getting out because 2 years is far too short for you to run out.
As for costs, that depends on your area AND the type of refrigerant. Since its only 2 years old you are almost gauranteed its not R-12, which is good. Its the coldest freon but no longer used and the stuff is more expensive than gold.
Your first problem is that you got a Lennox. Trade that ****er in for a Ruud or Trane.

It's been raining for days here. Everything is flooded.
Pez, I'm surprised you don't have central air conditioning out there (or do you?). I thought you were talking about a window unit.
Anyway, I gotta go get my kids. Sorry for the lame snowman pic. :) Good luck.
If we don't hear from ya we'll just assume you melted.

Tell me about it... R-22 sucks. I remember helping a buddy replace his unit with some R-502 but he was a HVAC guy anyway so it was never a big deal.
Believe me, if the warranty didnt still cover the compressor, I would bag this POS Lennox unit in a heartbeat.

I'm really enjoying this spring weather after living in Miami the past three years and finally returning to Colorado. I felt guilty running the air conditioner last week when it was in the low-90's, but hell, I have it so I might as well use it :approve: .

Isn't there an ocean that you could go to and cool off for a few hours?

The lineset leaking after 2 years is not that un-common. Out here on the East coast the prices for R-22 (refrigerant) are going up fast. The days of manufacturing ac units that use R-22 are coming to an end soon. Get it checked out sooner rather than later before the prices on this stuff get out of hand.

Thanks for the info Rich Karlis. I didnt know that R-22 was going the way of the dodo. Hopefully this damned unit is not using it. CB-Champ, screw this, lets go to the beach brah... Laguna sound good?

Pez.....Try this first Replace your filter if you havent already.....they need to be changed about every 2 - 3 months though I usually wait until something like this happens....If the filter is dirty as mine was last week it restricts airflow which causes freezing, which in turn does not allow for cooling.....seriously time to pull the filter and take a look it would probably located near forced heat if you have it or your blower....and filters are very cheap mine was 7.59 for a 3 pack

Nah... I change the filters religiously. Believe me, with the smog and crud in the air down here, its a moral imperative to do that every few months without a doubt.
Hey ya stranger, I just realized you are back! Bout freaking time Xtreme. Been doing any gaming lately?

Hey Pez, you need to move closer to the beach. It's been in the 80's sunny and breezy here near the coast.
I heard that they're going to start charging nearly $12.00 on the 91 toll on thurs and Fri. soon. That's just crazy. only a few years ago it was only around two dollars.
Toll roads are the such a crock! Glad I don't need to use one.

I use the 241 and 261 tollroads every day brah. Money VERY well spent IMO. Screw the 91 toll lanes... they are still terrible. As for moving closer to the beach, believe me, I would love to move to the Dana Pt, Laguna or Newport beach area where temps never get above 85 or below 55 year-round.
Well, I called the damned Lennox HVAC peeps closest to me, and of course with the holiday coming, they cant come look until next week, soooooo...
it looks like I'll be camping out up in Big Bear or hiding at the beach for the next few days and "roughing it"

I feel your pain Pez, it's almost midnight and the temp in my apt is 93. The AC unit crapped out and manager hasn't fixed it. I really, really hate the central valley, thats why I am enjoying my stay on Mustafar, not as hot.

Serrano Campground in Big Bear is always good if you're playing on the lake. I think it was the 'evening star loop site' that were the best camps there for tents and small pop-ups.
The 4th of July fireworks are great off the lake there too.
That reminds me of a few years ago camping there early in the season when I was woken up early in the morning to find a car full of L.A. hood rats attempting to set up their tent not three feet from ours on our camp site. Good thing I was camping with two other couples to back me up. I guess they couldn't find a site open (since you have to reserve these weeks in advance) so they were just going to squat just anywhere.

That sounds about par for the course. Of course, they probably couldn't afford batteries and would of cranked up their car stereo up high enough to chase away bears.

They damn near got perm stuck when they high centered their low rider as they pulled it over the fire pit and wood to use the high-beams to see...and try and figure out this thing called a tent they must have 'found' somewhere that day. I'll never forget that holiday weekend camping trip.
Ya gotta wonder what some people think. Like I'm not going to mind someone driving through our camp, pointing their head lights directly at my tent lighting it up like a CIA interagation....as they wack away at their tent spikes three feet from my head at 2:00 in the morning.
Then they had the dumb looks as to why we took exception to this.
Not only did we have to kick them out... we had to physical push their low rider out with them as it was stuck.
Holiday weekends are the worst to try and do any kind of camping in the nearby mountains around here. It always brings out the looneys that just up and decide to experience pine tree's and clean air for the first time.
