Forty years from now those gay ass movies from the 30s and 40s wont be on the list anymore. Of all of those crap movies, Citizen Kane is the only worth a damn and, its actually slotted at the proper spot at #1. Once all these nostalgic old critics die off, real movies can get into the top 100.

I've seen 86 of them.
The only ones I haven't seen are Singin' in the Rain, Sunset Boulevard, Annie Hall, It happened One Night, the Best Years of Our Lives, Birth of a Nation, An American in Paris, Wuthering Heights, The Gold Rush, City Lights, Mutiny on the Bounty (the 1935 version, anyway), the Jazz Singer, Bringing Up Baby and Yankee Doodle, etc.
I've seen cuts from a few of them (like Birth of a Nation) but never sat through the whole thing.
Some of the older movies on the list were pretty so-so by modern standards, but they probably made the list as "landmarks" due to innovations of one sort or another.

See, one example of what I was talking about is "The Third Man" which is ranked #57.
There is no way that this was the 57th best film ever made. It's almost un-watchable. But I guess it set the stage for a generation of "Noir" films that were influenced by German Expressionism or Existentialism or some ism like that, so it makes a lot of lists.
Which is fine, but don't waste your time watching it unless you're really into film history.

In many lists a lot of films are placed according to their importance to film and film history. Birth of a Nation was a racist film that the Director himself later apologized for. That fact notwithstanding, at the time it was considered an incredible advancement both technically and narrative in film production. So even though the subject matter was very questionable (even for many people at the time), its influence in film is undeniable. Citizen Kane's is considered one of the greatest groundbreaking films from many different perspectives. Its influence in filmmakers is to of importance today. However a film like the Graduate is very dated by today's standards, but again, based on its historical influence it is rated highly. So just because a film is listed there does not mean it would be relevant to many viewers today. That being said, I do like many of the films post ;)
PS, I think this list is from The AFI (American Film institute) top 100. There are a number of other lists (e.g Roger Ebbert, Village Voice, Barry Norman, etc.), but they share many similarities. e.g. CK #1 (or close).

I've only seen part of "Singin in the Rain", but I'd like someone to explain why it's all the way up to #10 on the list.
"Rocky" is only #79? Who doesn't love "Rocky"? That was a classic. They rated it about 25 spots too low, IMO.
"Patton" is rated below "Platoon"? That's a crock... :cuss:

I've seen 31 movies on that list and they were all good. I think it's B.S. that they didn't include any movies from the last nine years. Did we forget how to make good movies or something. I would put the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, the extended editions, in the top 10.

The choreography of Singing in the Rain is considered groundbreaking. You may personally not like that type of cinema, but the rating is based on its historical significance as well. Rocky is a great story, but it has been told many times (i.e. the American Dream). Consequently, because its historical contribution is not as strong, it affects its rating.

How did Pink Flamingo not make the list???
It is very shocking and low budget. It's gross and crude and made me wince.
http://img.epinions.com/images/opti/ac/f7/1016327-movie-resized200.jpg
In 1972, John Waters shot a ultra-low budget film called Pink Flamingoes. It became his "best" work, a cult classic that was banned for many years after its release, but released in 1997 in a 25th anniversary edition complete with commentary and cut outs by John Waters. Interestingly enough, the trailer for the film, John Waters mentions, doesn't show any footage from the film, the distributors, New Line Films, probably too afraid of controversary which may result if even one still was shown.
Pink Flamingoes stars Divine, a transvestite who plays Divine a.k.a. Babs Johnson, self-billed as the "Filthiest Person in the World". She is hiding out from the FBI in a run down trailer in the backwoods of Phoenix, Maryland. Divine lives with Edie, her mentally-ill obese mother with an egg fetish played by Edith Massey; her son Crackers, played by Danny Mills; and Cookie, played by Cookie Mueller.
Divine and her gang are criminially opposed by Connie and Raymond Marble, played by Mink Stole and David Lochary, a married foot-fetish loving urban white trash couple jealous of Divine's notority. The Marbles feel they deserve the Filthiest title because of what they do for a living basically an illegal baby adoption ring replete with kidnapped women chained in their basement. The two sides touch off a family feud, the Marbles coming to burn down Divine's trailor; Divine and Crackers defiling the Marble's house by licking down everything with saliva.
Along the way, there are plenty of perverse moments, like Raymond flashing people in the park with assorted sausages and a turkey head attached to exaggerate his size. He gets outdone himself when he tangles with a woman in a park who first flashes her breasts, then scares him off with her penis, the woman really a transvestite. There is a lot of full male nudity in this movie, but that shouldn't be too much of a shocker, it is par the course.
Topics run the gamut from bestiality to coprophagy, and everything else inbetween. There is murder, incest, lynching, arson, rape, cannabilism, transvestites, lesbians, nudity, graphic sex, lewdness, incest, fellatio, window peeping, humilation, obesity, mental illness, egg fetishism, foot fetishism, late term abortion, emasculation, defecation, vomiting, masturbation, flashing, perversion, kidnapping, nazis, white trailer trash, bad tastes in clothes, animal cruelity, sadomasochism, even evily possessed couches. I'm sure I'm missing a few here.
Most of the time, it is cheap base humor, with the freak shows to match. If you decide to watch, don't miss out on Bab's birthday party. It is insane, both humorous, and flat out outrageous. The park scene was good also, the audience
will fall for that one too. If for some reason, you are inured to what's going on around you, John Waters will make sure to get you with the poodle scene before you leave the theater.
As a film from the 1970's, it certainly was shocking and revolutionary for its time. It is now 2001, and the film is still shocking, which is good; society's morals seem to be intact.
John Waters certainly is the auteur of bad taste; well.. no, that is not kind enough compliment... He is the king of perverse, and tasteless humor. If its not outrageous, demented, shocking, and most of all real enough to be beliveable, then its not John Waters.

Oliver Stone's JFK should be included just because of the editing. It's brilliant overall IMO.
I'm glad to see Eastwood's Unforgiven make the list. One of the best westerns of all time.
Pulp Fiction should be rated higher, if only for the impact it had on modern cinema.

Im still stunned that the Exorcist didn't make the list. No doubt David Lean was a great great director tho.
I dont understand how come Star Wars is there on the list but none of the others are(if you wanna place it there). I mean, I just fail to comprehend film critics who says that the first one was good but the others suck. Heck, it's like saying only the first LOTR is good and the others arent?
I counted 46 movies that I've seen. I might have seen more tho, but they used to translate or give the movie a norwegian name before. So I might have seen more.

I agree that "Casino" is overrated in regard to being one of the best films of all time, but it is however a very good film. The thing I like about Scorsese's mafia films is the well wriiten story structure and dialogue. As a novice to screenwriting, I've studied "Casino" in and out.

I'm a film major currently looking at the end of my education in that field. There are a couple of things you need to remember when looking at this list and understanding why certain movies made the list over others.
Is the movie quality? Are all the production elements sound? Does it fit tigether nicely and ultitmately tell a story?
Was it ahead of its time? Did it break paradigms? Was there some new editing technique, lighting style, or general innovations featured?
Movies like the original Star Wars were generally very average compared its contemporaries in terms of lighting, sound, and composition. However Star Wars single handedly revived the years of the Blockbuster movies and general film excitement.
Some of you don't like Citizen Kane. (Personally I think Casablanca goes at number 1.) However, Citizen Kane used lighting, sound, plot elements and imagery in a way that was light years ahead of its time. Even after its release, directors had trouble being able to replicate the beautiful aesthetic that is achieved in that film. Even today they do!
Some of the films showcase revolutionary acting ability like In On The Waterfront and Rebel Without a Cause. The latter was more about exposing the real living rooms of America, but both showed a free, realistic approach to movie acting that ran against conventions. Its mainstream now, and watching James Dean and Marlon Brando fromn today's standard is actually quite ho-hum, but you need to keep perspective on what these films did to the industry back then and how they set conventions that are still used today.
I reccomend just about all those films. If you watch all those films with a critical eye, you will have a real good understanding of American cinema. And remember that its just American.
I'd sit through Beavis and Butthead do America long before trying to sit through half that crap.
Maybe 20 of those movies would be on my top 100 list.....at best.

Cmon Anubis...you cant really tell me that the storyline and acting in that movie deserve a spot in the top 100...
Well, depends on what your looking for. overall the movie is very good and entertaining. i mean, when i look at Casablanca it doesnt do anything for me and i cant say that the acting is all that great either but some say it does. but i would be willing to say that at least 8 out of 10 movie fans would say that Scarface belongs. i mean, i was pretty disappointed that like 80% of the movies on this list were really old. i just dont find that very objective when it comes to deciding these kind of things.

Sorry DF...but realistically Scarface is one sh!tty movie...If this was a top 100 OVERRATED movies of all time, then I'd understand what you mean about it being left of the list...
No way man, I love that movie and it is a great piece of film, Pacino acts great in that movie and overall is a great storyline and that is payed to perfection.
I don't know if there are 5 movies out there that I would rather watch than Scarface, I honestly put it that high up there.

So that should prove that Anubis's theory of 8 of 10 movie fans that Scarface belongs, is a load of crap...

I saw "Der Untergang" on saturday. That was an awesome movie. It portrays Hitlers last days in the bunker until he took his own life along with Eva Braun.
The acting was just awesome. Words cannot describe. And it does portray him as a human being, not the devil incarnated which other movies tend to do.
You'd have to bear with subtexts to see it tho since it is in german.

I would rather watch the Bride instead of Tony Montana...
Not only that...I'd rather watch Blow instead of Scarface...atleast that story is sort of realistic, based on a true story actually...instead of some fictitious wannabe...

How does "The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly" not make the list? How does "The Silence Of The Lambs" make the list, but not "The Exorcist"? Where's Akira Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai"? Very disappointing!
PS: "The Godfather" should be #1 IMHO.
Where is Scarface? Definitely a movie that I can watch over and over. Glad Jaws is on the list though!!! Easy Rider, cool movie but top 100, I dont know?

How is scarface not that realistic? The Cubans coming over in flocks to escape communism and Castro did happen, and they were met with having to do whatever they could to make money.
He came over and started out as a dishwasher for a corner restaurant, met the right people and made his way up the charts, I don't see how that is so unrealistic.

Not to everyone and not everyday, but his personality made it that way, he didn't take **** and he wanted the world, stopped at nothing to get there.
Why do you think they made such an emphasis on his personality and character in the movie? Becuase any Joe somebody would've never made it in that business, they portrayed him that way because that's what it takes to be the guy on top.

I really have no problem with a lot on this list....however Duck Soup? Sure it was a great Marx Bros. film, but W.C. Field's The Bank Dick & It's A Gift were much funnier.
I thought CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, MIDNIGHT COWBOY & 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY outright sucked. I have little use for musicals, so I avoid them at all costs.
I'd add Donnie Brasco somewhere on there as well.

Screw AFI's list. Never even bothered to read it. And IMDB.com's list is a known fanboy list. That being said, there are some real gems to be found that are not in the top 250 that could easily rank as cinematic masterpieces.
My own personal favorites would have to be...
Godfather Trilogy
Goodfellas
Shawshank Redemption
Lord of the Rings Trilogy
Jaws
Fight Club (Just for TJ ;D )
Usual Suspects
Pulp Fiction
Raiders of the Lost Ark (Indy Trilogy)
Die Hard
Alien (and Aliens)
The Good, the Bad, the Ugly
The Right Stuff
Big Fish
The Big Lebowski
Star Wars Trilogy (Original)
Leon
The Matrix
Kill Bill vol 1 &2
A Christmas Story
Snatch
Se7en
Braveheart

To be honest, Scarface is much more of an icon and quote filled movie to me more than the actual substance within the movie itself.
Lots of fun scenes, some decent action, and an outright hilariously bad bunch of accents by some of the characters. The pacing is just too jumbled at times for me to really make it one of my favorites. But that doesnt stop me from loving the gore and violence
I give it 6 out of 10 yeyo's ;D

Screw AFI's list. Never even bothered to read it. And IMDB.com's list is a known fanboy list. That being said, there are some real gems to be found that are not in the top 250 that could easily rank as cinematic masterpieces.
My own personal favorites would have to be...
Godfather Trilogy
Goodfellas
Shawshank Redemption
Lord of the Rings Trilogy
Jaws
Fight Club (Just for TJ ;D )
Usual Suspects
Pulp Fiction
Raiders of the Lost Ark (Indy Trilogy)
Die Hard
Alien (and Aliens)
The Good, the Bad, the Ugly
The Right Stuff
Big Fish
The Big Lebowski
Star Wars Trilogy (Original)
Leon
The Matrix
Kill Bill vol 1 &2
A Christmas Story
Snatch
Se7en
BraveheartGreat list! I have every one of those on DVD except A Christmas Story, which is always played multiple times on cable during December, anyway. Leon (The Professional) is such a great movie.
I've recently been plowing through a bunch of foreign films on Netflix. I watched Good Bye Lenin! this weekend and enjoyed it.
On the Scarface issue, it's an entertaining movie but I wouldn't put it on any top 100 or 200 lists. I thought Pacino was overacting a little too much. Still, his Tony Montana will be remembered forever by many people.

Jurassic Park...
That was a joke right?
Watching Animtrons chase little kids in a kitchen? Did it occur to any of these morons a Raptor would sniff out these monkeys in about 10 seconds?
It's almost as pathetic as "My Jewish Geinius" on Independence Day. Me and Wild Wild West are going to just go plant a "virus" into the mothership.
Yeah, like they might not have something called a password.
I did think the "I'm Back" scene was amusing tho.
It would of made more sense to simply jam the alien crafts shields than to have some rediculous routine.
Jurrasic Park was horrible. Possibly the worst movie of all time.

I think the Blade Trilogy is very solid action/horror and its pretty underrated. I was never a big fan of the comic book character. I never read Tomb of Dracula and I avoided any comics inked by Gene Colon, who appeared to using a Magic Marker to ply his trade. I was aware of the Blade character, but never really gave him a second thought. Still, the concept of a DayWalker, a being with all the powers of a vampire, but none of the weaknesses was interesting. Especially since Blade came to be as a result of his pregnant mother being bitten by a vampire, thus his lifelong pledge to eradicate every bloodsucker on the planet.
Wesley Snipes does a great job in the title role. He's very convincing in an action movie because he's extremely physically fit. Its my pet peeve to see badass comic book characters portrayed by actors who don't look like they could beat up anybody in a fight. Blade himself is not a complex guy, but Snipes is a better actor than most action movie hacks and he does a solid job sneering his way through all three films. They also do a nice job of casting vampires and vampire killers who are also physically suited to roles in action films.
The proper casting of this type of film really shows up in the action scenes, especially the fight scenes. The violence in Blade movies is always harsh and relatively realistic, given the medium. The martial arts moves are either blocked, or ducked, none of this pansyass dancefighting you see in the Matrix films, where the "combatants" are punching air two feet away from each other.
I really see these as action films first, but they play up the horrific element pretty nicely. The vampires are unfailingly cruel and the contempt they show for humans is palpable in almost every scene. You really grow to hate the human familiars who serve the vampires and I enjoy every time one of the little rats gets what's coming to them.
David S Goyer wrote all three films. Most people loved the first two and hated the third one, but I liked all three of them. Goyer is also the writer of Dark City and the eagerly anticipated Batman Begins.

Dude? AOD is a classic. sure, its not the same as Evil Dead I or II but i found Army of Darkness to be a gas.
All three of those movies were great IMO.
Bruce Cambell for president.

If someone hasn't mentioned it, "The Iron Cross" is right up there with the best war flicks of all time. I hope I got the title right, James Coburn . . . . .

I haven't seen those.
To me Bruce Cambell will be always be know for his Evil Dead movies. He was one tough son-of-a-b****
Anyone that can cut off his own possessed hand and laugh while doing it gets my vote as toughest man in the world.

"88 posts and not one goddamn zombie movie. You people disappoint me."
Hey, Slap --
You're right, this list needs zombies. I'll take the original "Night of the Living Dead" or Lucio Fulci's "Zombie," from the mid-70s. "Zombie" had some amazing cutting-edge gore, and how can you not like a film with an underwater fight between a zombie and a tiger shark? Now that's something you'll never see anywhere else...

I just saw Cinderella Man. It is very good 4 stars!!! Slap you would love this movie because of it's historical relevence.
Opie....errr I mean Ron Howard is one of the great directors of all time. This show is so much better than Rocky it's amazing. A can't miss!!!!!
James Braddock's story was an amazing one. I'm going to definitely check it out. Sea Biscuit was an excellent depression era sports movie and I'm told Cinderella Man is just as good if not better.

Finally, someone mentions The Crow! Thought I was gonna have to do it myself... The original Crow, with Brandon Lee, gets my vote for best action movie of all time, even over Terminator 1. I saw it with three friends, and we all walked out stunned into silence. Just got in our cars and drove away, without even saying "good night." I described it later around the office as a dark, gritty, violent, beautiful love story. What more could you want?
I think the thing to remember with the Evil Dead trilogy is that what Raimi attempted to do with the movies shifted as the series progressed. The first Evil Dead flick was a serious, straight-ahead attempt at low-budget horror. There are no shots of a "monster" because the budget was too low for the crew to build one that Raimi didn't find laughable... so they went instead with the "monster's eye" zooming shots across the forest floor. Great idea, and the pacing and atmosphere of the film worked for me. It was one of the very few films I've ever seen that made me turn the lights back on.
With the second one, Raimi decided to mine a vein of "unintentional" humor that snuck into the first one, while taking the effects over the top as much as he could. "Good Ash, bad Ash, I'm the one with the gun." Still one of my favorite lines.
And the third was pure splatstick comedy. :-) Loved it anyhow... actually loved all three of 'em. And any other project that has Bruce Campbell in it. Bubba Ho-Tep, anyone?
Come to think of it, I seem to recall Bruce making a cameo appearance in Spiderman. It's a trademark of Sam Raimi's work that his brother Ivan Raimi and Bruce make at least a cameo appearance in every one of Sam's projects. And Uncle Ben's car, in the first Spiderman, was the same make and model as the car that drove Bruce and his annoying college friends to their doom in the first Evil Dead. Just gotta love the threads of continuity that hold a director's career together... :-)

I can't wait. The traditional slow and shambling zombies are back, but they're getting smarter.

I would guess less than 10 out of the 100s of movies discussed on this thread have believable plots...
One of my other favorites, The Ghost and the Darkness (great with surround sound), is supposedly based on true events, yet even in the introduction the narrator says it's unbelievable.

One of my favorite all-time films is "Fargo." There are a lot of people out there who think that was a true story. A few years ago, some woman from Japan was found dead in the snow. Supposedly, she was looking for the suitcase full of money. The sheriff in the town said he still gets inquiries about the "lost money" and has had to bust people in the past for trespassing onto local ranchers' properties with shovels in their hands.

Nah, you kind of missed my point. i dont want to give too much away but my point was when your trying to guess who is the culprit you WOULDNT have thought of the one who it ends up being especially after the car explosion. i know the story itself is unbelievable but none the less it was a good movie.
