Wilson predicting great things for LB corps
By Patrick Saunders
Denver Post Broncos beat reporter
An assortment of NFL notes and quotes for a Sunday morning:
Just two years ago, the Broncos' linebacker trio of Al Wilson, John Mobley and Ian Gold seemed on the verge of being the league's best.
Then Mobley suffered a devastating neck injury and Gold tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and moved on to Tampa Bay.
Now Gold is back and healthy, Wilson remains a rock in the middle and D.J. Williams, a rookie of the year candidate last season, is a star in the making. No wonder Wilson predicts great things.
"We can be very good," Wilson said. "We can be just as good as when Ian and John were here. With D.J. still being a young guy, we still have to jell a little more. John was a veteran guy that understood the game, understood offenses and understood the scheme we were trying to do.
"Once D.J. gets that down to a science, there's no question we'll definitely be the best corps in the league."
"The NFL is big business." Fans hear it more often than they would like, but it's an inescapable truth.
Consider running back Ricky Williams.
He abruptly quit on the Dolphins on the eve of last year's training camp, saying he no longer had an interest in playing football.
But now there are reports out of South Florida that Williams wants to return to the Dolphins.
You don't suppose money has anything to do with it, do you? Of course you do.
Williams owes the Dolphins $8.6 million for breaching his contract by unexpectedly retiring.
He also entered into a settlement last month with a woman, agreeing to pay $4,000 a month in support and contribute $300,000 to a trust fund account for a child he fathered.
Here's something to ponder. If Jerry Rice signs with the Broncos, he truly would be an old man among boys. When Rice entered the NFL with San Francisco in 1985, Broncos rookie cornerback Domonique Foxworth was 3 years old.
If Rice becomes a Bronco, Foxworth will be covering him in training camp.
Speaking of Rice, don't expect him to keep No. 80 if he comes to Denver.
That number belongs to a guy named Rod Smith, the Broncos' leading receiver and a lock for the Broncos' Ring of Fame.
When asked last week if Smith should give up his number for Rice, Wilson laughed, then said: "For a small fee."
Then Wilson got serious: "No, I wouldn't give it to Rice. Rod has truly earned that number. That number is going into the Broncos' Hall of
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
fame. That is Rod Smith's number. I would assume that Jerry Rice would respect that and get the closest thing to it."
The Dark Side continues to spin its web.
NFLshop.com reported last week that Randy Moss' No. 18 Oakland Raiders jersey is the hottest jersey on the market.
My theory is there are two factors at work.
One, Moss' renegade image captivates fans - especially those Oakland fans who turn Sunday tailgate parties into a Hell's Angels convention.
Two, the silver-and-black really makes for a cool jersey.
The Raiders have consistently dominated NFL clothing, with a jersey in the top 10 the past five years.
Defensive lineman Warren Sapp was a bust on the field last season, but his jersey was fifth in sales. Rice's Raiders jersey was in the top 10 from 2001-03. Cornerback Charles Woodson finished in the top 10 in 2001.
For the record, the only Broncos shirt currently in the top 20 is quarterback Jake Plummer's No. 16, which ranks 17th, just behind Packers legend Brett Favre.
And what about Peyton Manning's classic blue-and-white No. 18 Colts jersey? It came in at No. 21.
In case you missed it, new Broncos punter Todd Sauerbrun is boycotting the media.
"Todd has an embargo on the media for the rest of his NFL career," his agent, David Canter, said shortly after the punter was traded to Denver from Carolina on Thursday. "He has been beat up by the media for the past 10 years and he doesn't need that anymore."
Hmm, a punter, who is due to make $3.895 million over the next three seasons, has been implicated in a steroids scandal and now doesn't want to talk to the media. The NFL is indeed a weird and wacky world.

What bothers me is that Wilson basically said "It's D.J.'s fault" if they don't make it. What? Wilson is now perfect? I'm glad they are playing loose. It's offseason. I guess they have high expectation for D.J. and it sounds like Wilson is happy to see Gold.

I haven't noticed Wilson in two years. For being one of our best players why is he so invisable? The last 5 yrs Denver has no reason to talk after all our 2nd half of season meltdowns shut up and prove it that we are good. Bad Ass players step up in big games haven't noticed much of that lately.

No kidding. Heard all that before. I like Wilson's competiteveness, but yeah, shut up and do something. And then he implies maybe DJ has a long way to go. Jeez . . . Williams is already better than Wilson, Mobley, or Gold.
As many times as Wilson gets totally stuffed by RB's on blitzes - I mean TOTALLY stopped dead in his tracks - you'd think he'd be using his mental energy for visualizing better blitzes. The guy's a terrible blitzer, just awful.

Putting Warren in front of Wilson should help him. Wilson is neither big, nor particuliarly strong. He's not an all-pro by any means, and eventually, we have to replace him. That said, he's certainly servicable, and above average. Some bigger linemen in front of him should help him out. As much as Slappy loves to discuss my penis, I know it has it's limitations, I'm not John Holmes, nor am I dead. Slappy is still waiting for his Bar Mitzvah and adjusting his geek hat. If they can find anything to chop off that is.
Being an Irish Jew in Las Vegas with a limp foreskin must be rough, so I will back off only to laugh.
If he's so bent out of shape about Gold, why didn't Pierce take over the job at Sam. Don't tell me Coyer had no say about the Gold signing. Shanahan is an offensive guy. If Wilson wants to tell us we have some Pittsburg LB corp, that's his bravado. We know better, but it's all Zen. Believe it, it's real.
Wilson won't be the last chicken with no feathers to strut like a Rooster. I think we will have a pretty good DL this year to cover his weaknesses. If anything, he should be grateful for that. I think he has three years left in his sorry ass, and he's not a liability IMO. Again, I consider all players just meat on the hoof, but I don't think Wilson needs to be replaced at all. He's a team leader, and his resume is totally clean.

Rolling With the Changes
By J. Michael Moore
DenverBroncos.com
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Broncos safety John Lynch was wrapping up an interview with local media Thursday when middle linebacker Al Wilson entered the room.
BRONCOS TV: QB CAMP WEEK 1: CLARETT SETTLES IN
BRONCOS TV: COULD RICE BECOME A BRONCO?
QUARTERBACK CAMP PHOTO GALLERY
Lynch had just entered into a compliment-laced response on Wilson when the two-time Pro Bowler crept up on the podium behind him.
"I didn't know a lot about Al Wilson when I cam here but one thing I recognized right away is he's a guy that loves to play the game of football," Lynch said. "I kind of feed off his energy, I think he feeds of my energy and I think we're both driven by the same thing as football players and that's to be the best. I really enjoy playing with him."
Members of the media asked if Lynch made his comments because Wilson was in the room.
"Is he behind me?" Lynch asked.
The room erupted in laughter as the co-captains of the Broncos defense exchanged nods and Wilson took his place in front of reporters.
Compliments are nothing new for Wilson. He's been a starting linebacker for six seasons. Only defensive lineman Trevor Pryce can boast that long of a tenure in Denver, and he missed all but two games last season with a back injury.
Since Wilson was drafted out of Tennessee in 1999, the Broncos' defense has used more than 30 different starters. The team added Lynch and Pro Bowl cornerback Champ Bailey prior to last season and four defensive linemen from the Cleveland Browns this season. Linebackers Ian Gold and Keith Burns also re-signed with the team after stints with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
With the adjustments 2005 may prove to be one of the best years for the defense in terms of talent and depth, but the Broncos have always had consistency with Wilson.
The West Tennessee native had 109 tackles, 2.5 sacks and an interception returned for a touchdown last season. Denver fans also won't forget the hit he put on Raiders running back Tyrone Wheatley last Nov. 28, stopping a fourth-and-one attempt.
He has recorded more than 100 tackles in five of his six seasons, been around the proverbial NFL block and likes what he sees out of the revamped Broncos defense, particularly the defensive line and linebacker units.
Bringing Gold -- a starter for the Broncos in 2002 and 2003 -- back excites Wilson, who said the current linebacker unit, though different from years past, has a shot to be one of the best in the league.
But the overhauled defensive line also excites Wilson.
"When I look at those guys I get excited simply because we have four guys that can play up front and then we've got another four guys that can start anywhere in the league," Wilson said. "The depth that we have at the D-line position now is unbelievable.
"If we can get those guys healthy and keep them healthy throughout the season then we're going to destroy a lot of offenses just up front. It's going to allow (the linebackers) to do a lot of different things on the back end that we haven't had a chance to do in previous years."
There are some questions left when it comes to the linebacker slots. Gold played on the right side in his first run with the Broncos. D.J. Williams, the Broncos first-round pick in 2004, assumed that spot in 2004. Wilson -- the group's unquestioned leader -- said Williams has size to play on the left side and take on opposing tight ends.
Either way, having an over abundance of experienced bodies at the position isn't a bad problem to have, especially with a veteran like Wilson making the calls in the huddle.
"Anytime I look to the side it seems like sometimes it's D.J., sometimes its Ian," Wilson said. "I don't know if we're going to switch it up. I don't know how we're going to do it. As long as I have them both on the field with me, it doesn't matter."

Big Al seems pumped. There are some ifs, but overall, he seems ready for battle. Having FatAss Warren in front of him can only help.
That 8.5 line in Vegas looks better and better.
Unless that line has moved, I would break the bank on Denver winning at least 9.
We have a zillion corners as well. We literally have a quadrillion players to sort thru on D, and Coyer isn't shy. He will slash and burn into a pretty good unit IMO.

WHat Wilson was saying is that everyone knows what Wilson and Gold bring to the table. Wilson and Gold are not going to get much better. DJ on the other hand is in his second year and IF he improves as much as everyone thinks he can than Denver will have one of the best LBing corps in the NFL. I agree with that 100%.

What's wrong with just "We're planning on being a strong unit this year."? These guys talk too much. Leave it to the coaching staff to make critiques. That's not the player's jobs to critique their units or other players, or make comparisons to other players. I just basically don't want to hear that from a player.

Pretty amusing you would go to the bother to post something that means nothing. Honestly, I haven't agreed with a damn thing you have ever posted. Take it for what you will, I just haven't. Doesn't mean I don't try to, I just think your on a different planet.
I'm not required to explain crap to you. I'm also not allowed to beat you down. I don't even get worked up regarding your posturing. It's totally irrelevant. Ring a Ding Ding.

Sure. This means nothing right? I wouldn't be surprised though. Most of the time your posts mean nothing.

I am not a fanatic.
My favorite team is the Denver Broncos.
My NFC team is the Vikings.
When the Vikings and the Broncos meet, I root for the Cheerleaders.

I don't posture. I just reply to the self serving and self grandizing crap you spew up on this board.
You want people to stop challenging your bs? Then stop posting bs!
Every other thread is littered with your crap about how your kittens are doing, how your nieces are doing, how your farm is doing, how you can beat down other posters who have the slightest varying opinion, and various other Nazi references you continiously try to sneak in like a rebellious 4 year old trying to find the limits of what you're parents will tolerate and what they'll respond to with a backhanded smack etc. etc etc.
If you're going to keep peddling crap on this board then people here have a right to refute that nonsense and call it like it is.
Maybe you should try to post actual, well though out football takes rather than lacing every post with I told you so's, I knew right from the start, my poor little kittens, my niece will make the olympics. This same old tired sh*t has been repeated a million times before.

DJ is a good tackler, takes good angles, solid technique, wraps up, brings the guy down fast. So that puts him way ahead of Wilson, Gold, and Mobley already.
I agree with what you say about DJ , and to some extent Gold , but I disagree about Wilson , though Wilson will bring the wood ..... The only thing i have against gold is his size , I dont like Pumped up Smurfs Playing line backer , But then according to some , gold can get to a QB faster then all of our other backers .so we will see

I agree. DJ was the best LB on the field last year. That is scarey

Lonely, pathetic, attention-starved, racist alcoholic. The good news is he's already on his way to another meltdown and banning. He's too stupid and undisciplined to prevent it from happening. That will be a happy day for the adults on this board.

Wow, questioning if another poster is a true fan? That's some pretty big talk coming from a watermock, who's a self confessed viqueen fan and can't decide between the hornheads and broncos:

Does that ring a bell?
When you decide which team to root for maybe then you can start calling out another fan's loyalty. But until then, don't talk trash if you can't back it up.
:pity:
wow.
whats up with that mock?
i mean, we all know you like the vikes also, and thats all good, but if they played against eachother you'd ride the fence?
really?

I like Wilson a lot, very competitive, no quit at all, but I find it irritating he's critiquing the unit. I think he should just keep it bland and general.
