Let's say it's true that Jerry Rice signs with Denver and is reunited with Mike Shanahan. If the decision to employ Rice is partially based on molding former first-round pick Ashley Lelie into a top receiver – and I think it is – my first thought is: Why does Lelie need Rice to accomplish this?
Of course, any receiver would do well taking tips from the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time), but Lelie has had the most underrated receiver of the past 10 years – Rod Smith – to learn from. Since 1997, only Marvin Harrison has more receptions than Smith's 690 – not bad for an undrafted free-agent quarterback.
And, as Chris Mortensen said on SportsCenter, Rice would be a fourth receiver and might have to play special teams, an apparent sticking point. Again, look to Rod: Last year, at age 32, he returned punts.

I don't want the Broncos to get Rice. I see him is more of a distraction for the team than a leader.

Rod is my favorite player, what a great guy to have on your team. Say what you will about Owens, Moss, or anyone else - I'd rather have a guy who's a great teammate.

I agree. The Jerry Rice Watch will be never ending: is he catching balls? is he sore? is Jake getting him involved in the offense? How long will he be out?

Did he catch too many of Rod's balls? Could Rod start feeling like a jilted lover? Would/could this Rice move ultimately piss off R. Smith? Very possibly, IMO.

Of all the possibilities, I don't see this as one.
As long as the wins come, I think Rod will be plenty happy.

Jerry Rice will be about as useful to this team as Namath was to the Rams, OJ was for the 49ers, E. Smith was for the Cards, etc. etc. etc.
Or in other words, he won't be worth much......The mentor factor doesn't apply, the team doesn't need him for gate.......he'll be a semi- decoy @ 4th or 5th wide out and that's pretty much it.
What I really wanna see is Rice gunning it on special teams Ha!

Did anyone see that Rocky Mountain Sports Report at the end of last season where a group of fans, players, and journalists were gathered in a salon. One fan accused the Broncos of not having enough heart last year. Rod looked like he wanted to b-slap the crap out of him. I don't blame Rod for that at all. What a stupid thing to say to someone whose twice the size of you, especially Rod.

Rod has a history of bitch-slapping too.

You know what else? Shanny sold us a bill of goods. He pulls the whole "there isn't a receiver in the draft (at #56) that could make our roster" and then he flirts with this geriatric? He is talking out of both sides of my mouth. It just goes to show you that putting a roster together is more about personal preference than science.
I just don't understand what Rice adds? Rice is not good enough to be one of our top 3 and it is well documented that he doesn't want to be a teacher of young receivers. So maybe he gets on the field for 10 or 15 percent of the plays during the season, wouldn't that be time better spent on a guy like BJ Johnson or Nate Jackson?
As much as I loath the guy, I'd rather see Freddie Mitchell simply because he is young enough to have some upside. There is simply no upside in signing Rice. He is going to be a distraction.

Don't forget Tony Dorsett to the Broncos.

I'd still rather see them sign Troy Brown.

I must disagree, Shanny has already said he has to come in and earn a spot, or he'll have to "do the most difficult thing I've ever done and let him go." So again, low risk, high reward. That's different than drafting a WR (passing up another position) who has to learn the offense (Rice pretty much knows it already), learn the pro game (any questions about Rice in that regard?), and then beat out guys that have been here.
If a 42 year old man beats out everyone to be #3, then so be it. A draft pick wasn't going to come in here and be #3 or #4.
