Well it's looking like he's a goner on June 1st from the Vikings... what do you think? I'd love to pick him up... I'm not that comfortable with Ferguson taking the torch for a full year. If we don't pick him up, I say Brandon Browner, trial by fire.

Opinions?

I've been wanting us to bring in Corey Chavous since his rookie season. This is such a no brainer.

Maybe he can give Shanahan some tips on how to draft for value. If so I'm all for it!

EIGHT interceptions in 2003. Touchdowns two of the last three years.

Please, Shanahan, please sign one player I like.

I know Chavous is a better draft evaluator than Mel Kiper is. Didnt his dad play for the Broncos?

i dont think we have the dough, unfortuneatly. Sauerbrun just took up another million in space and Rice will take up, what 750k, not to mention our rookie pool. I dont think we have more than a few dimes left after these two besides the rookie pool allocation.

You have to figure we'll have a few June 1st cuts ourselves, saving some more room.

Any ideas on who they might be?

thats right i didnt even think of June 1st. Im not sure who we may release. Havent heard any names. How much would it take to sign this guy? I think we'd have to release several people. I do remember Wabbit saying Middlebrooks recovery is not going well and he might be a surprise cut, but i dont think he was referring to June 1st. But if they want Chavous they might do it, if the recovery is going that poorly. That might save us, what, half a million in base salary? I dunno, it doesnt seem there are too many high priced guys we can afford to cut. Id be in favor of getting Corey though, he can ball. We're just going to have to creatively finance it.

Yep, his dad Barney played for the Broncos. He was a coach with the Broncos when Corey got drafted. I believe he's still coaching with Denver.

I thought Raylee was a free agent that hadn't been signed by anyone.

I've been longing for a ballhawk Safety since I saw Brodney Poole drop off the board in April. Either give me this, or give me Browner... just no Nick Ferguson till Lynch gets hurt.

Corey is Barney's nephew, not son. Corey was drafted by Arizona early in the second round in 1998. I was pulling for Denver to draft him that year. Instead, they selected a perennial pro bowler Marcus Nash about 3 slots ahead of where Chavous went. ahhhhhhhhhhhh... what could have been! :cuss:

I know the Hornheads signed Sharper, but I hadn't heard that Chavous was in bad favor. I might have to wander over to KFFL and see which way the wind is blowing. I know Chavous had a great year in 03, but struggled last, but I had no idea that they were considering releasing him. I don't understand it. They are still way under the cap, even after all the signings. I'm not aware of any injury issues with him. Maybe they are thinking of moving Brian Williams there, but he's on his last year of his rookie contract as well, and Sharper isn't exactly a spring chicken.

I'll wander over to the Beer Hall and find out the deal.

Yep, me too......

1998 NFL Draft

29 Miami John Avery RB Mississippi
30 Denver Marcus Nash WR Tennessee

Round 2
Sel# Team Player Pos. School
31 Oakland Leon Bender DT Washington State
32 Indianapolis Jerome Pathon WR Washington
33 Arizona Corey Chavous SS Vanderbilt
34 Tampa Bay Jacquez Green WR Floridaa

Of course I was pulling for Ahman Green in the second round that year instead of Eric Brown too......... :pity:

Over there, it sounds more like Chavous is a candidate to hold out for a new contract.

If Rice signs he'll only get the vet min which then only counts $500k against the cap or thereabouts minus $350k salary of the 53rd highest paid player only leaves the Broncos cap down $150k if they sign him. Todd deducts the cap by a further 850k. Baker's trade saved the Broncos approx $200k.

We have a zillion warriors lined up.

Time to get to work. I don't see many more moves. Chavous is just having a salary spat. For a guy with "toast" written on his skull, it's pretty amusing.

At the time of the draft, there was debate whether he would be CB or S. Thought was that he was too slow to be CB and too small to play S.

Right now I would grab him in a heartbeat. He is a vast improvement over Ferguson

Either Chavous or Lance Shulters.

I've been asking us to sign Schulters since the offseason because I have a strong feeling he'll get cut due to his high base salary.

Either one of these guys will be an upgrade over the two SS we have in Lynch and Fergy.
