i just saw on ESPNews that the Broncos traded Jason Baker & 06 7th for Todd Sauberbrun.

what's everyone's thoughts about this? i like Ernster but we needed a proven Punter now so i'm happy Shanny is bringing in that big 44.4 ypp leg

No, we just traded Baker and our 7th next year. No big deal, we still have 9 picks next year, two firsts.

I guess this ends the Jano Jokes.

Screw it, if he steps out of line they will have Ernster on the Practice Squad and can call him up if need be.

The Jano jokes won't end because the Broncos didn't use a 1st round pick on this guy. They used a 7th round pick and a guy that sucks.

Okay, We have a very accurate FG kicker, A good punter, maybe a KO specialist in Ernster, and our Second Rounder is the next coming of Dante Hall, we hope.

Now someone wake up the damn coverage unit. I know Gold busted his ACL in coverage, but I still send him.

With all these cornerbacks on the roster, we now need to concentrate on return coverage.

Special teams took a leap forward this year.

I hope this Myers kid can really long snap and likes to tackle.

Good news everybody. This is like one or two defensive stands each game, depending on how many times the offense gives it back. Sauerbaun is gonna add five yards a kick to his average easily by kicking in Denver and the delta between his "new" average and Bakers' is like 9-10 yards a punt. Unfortunately for Carolina, Bakers' average is going to drop 5 more yards, giving them a net 29 punt average. :yep:

Man, news gets around fast.

I just had a half dozen people call & tell me this had finally come down & logged in to create a thread.

You folks are better than a news ticker...good job

Well, everyone I talked to said it had to happen right away if it was going to get done, so I guess the Broncos got the character clauses they wanted.

One thing above all else can be said about this off-season...our Special Teams are going to rock!...oh...and we have more CBs than Uzbekastan has people, but that's a competition thing

I think its a great move. It only makes our D better, plus now Hall won't be so much of a threat when we play them. Heres to teams having to drive 80 to 90 yards on us after a punt instead of 25!!!!!!

Elam and Sauerbrun.

You gotta believe Denver is going to have the advantage in the kicking game each week.

SoCalBronco
05-19-2005, 11:34 AM
Ernster will go on the PS. He will be insurance in case Sauerbrun starts going flava. So the Broncos, in addition to the contractual provisions, have a bargaining chip to ensure the lack of flavor clownism. If Sauerbrun starts making problems, we can cut him with minimal financial loss and we have a guy already on our PS who is ready to go. Ernster is still a valuable part of this whole situation in that regard.

Yeah but I don't want to carry 3 kickers with all of our depth elsewhere (LB, CB, DL, RB). I'd rather have that roster spot elsewhere. Of course, keeping 3 kickers beats having Elam kick it to the 15.

GREAT move. Punters are relatively cheap....why not get the best one you can find? Why go cheaper to find a bunch of guys that can't punt? Denver's gone that route already.

Anybody remember when Rouen was fired? THAT was long overdue. Too bad it's taken a few years to sign a good punter, but the end result is worth waiting for, IMO.

Going in a slightly different direction... Here is NFL.com's analysis of Darrent Williams

Pat Kirwan's Analysis This is an explosive, 5-8 1/2 cornerback who will get the duty as the slot CB. His 4.3-flat 40 and his toughness tell me he'll be a blitzer in Larry Coyer's defense. As Gil Brandt said, if he were 5-11, he'd be a first-round pick.

But the real reason I posted his bio was to talk about his punt returns
2003: 13 returns, 17.9 avg, 2 TDs
2004: 9 returns, 27.7 avg, 1 TD

He also gained 25 yds per interception, returning 5 of his 11 for TDs! Man this guy is explosive.... But he only returned 22 punts in the past two seasons. He will have to return that many in 1/4 of the season.

Looks our ST should be much, much better.

1 or 2 players my arse!

Let's take a look what we fixed in the off season:

Defensive Line upgraded: Check
Defensive backs upgraded for depth: Check
Linebackers upgraded: Check
Offensive Line depth: Check
Running backs depth: Check
TE depth: Check
QB depth: Check
Punter: Check
Kicker: Re Checked
Depth at punter and kicker: Check
Punt Returner: Check
Kick Returner: Check
Special Team Captains: Check

Don't get me wrong. Because they are working on not over spending on players doesn't mean they have the Patriots formula in hand. They haven't won anything yet. I'm not sold on our coaches fully waking up to some of their own press clippings and getting rid of penalties, increasing the speed on defense, getting turnovers, and getting the pressure on the quarterback...whatever. I think there is a lot of off season to go and it's up to the team to keep focused. We haven't fixed everything.

All I am suggesting is that this team wants to win. There is nothing guaranteed but if we keep hitting out marks the odds increase to our favor. I like this off season.

remember that the Practice squad is expanded now, that is why The Broncs kept 2 QB's on it last year. There is room for a punter now, as only one QB will be on the PS, and one will be cut (Kanell probably).

Plus, there is always "injured reserve". They will find a way to keep Ernster, especially if Sauerbraun's contract has character clauses.

Damned good addition with little downside. Low picks are gold digging anyway and Baker won't make them or break us.

Punters don't get the respect they deserve. By determining starting field position they are our first defensive move.

I like having Sauerbrun as a punter more than I like Knorr, that's certain.

I'm suprised that the panthers didn't shoot down the trade when we threw Baker in on the deal. I would of just taken the pick and said no thanks to Baker. You can tell how good Baker is if Vermiel cut him and it's almost impossible to get cut by crybaby dick v.

Looking a lot better.

All 32 teams probably know what's going to happen with those named Panther players, even if the public doesn't. This trade wouldn't have happened if they were expecting a suspension.
Agreed. In fact, I think the timing of this "report" and the trade execution is curious. Perhaps that is one factor the Broncos were waiting on.

Well this is a good move IF Sourbum can keep his act together. The guy can punt, and will help our ST's, thats for sure. As long as he has his head on straight and realizes his stats should be better punting at altitude its a good move. My only question is can this guy kickoff worth a crap? I was reading the previous posts with his kickoff stats and they are not great, but not terrible either. If he can get us a TB on 25% of his kicks that would rock. All of this being said, I give Ernster a 30% of beating out Sourbum for the job.

The funniest part about this is that we actually found a team that WANTS Baker... Hilarious!

For real send that chump back to KC where he belongs. Or Carolina of course where he can get some roids.

Broncos trade for punter Sauerbrun
Team gives up Jason Baker, 7th-round pick in '06 draft
By The Associated Press

The Denver Broncos traded for punter Todd Sauerbrun today, sending their own punter, Jason Baker, and a seventh-round pick in next year's draft to the Carolina Panthers.

Sauerbrun is one of the best punters in the game - he led the NFC in gross average from 2001-03 - but he has been in trouble through much of the last few years.

Sauerbrun was identified recently in a CBS report as one of three Carolina Panthers who obtained illegal steroid prescriptions from an alternative medicine doctor in South Carolina.

Late last year, the punter was arrested and charged with drunken driving.

Last season, he refused to fill in for injured kicker John Kasay unless Carolina refunded some of the money the team fined him for being overweight.

During that episode, Sauerbrun vetoed Carolina's attempt to bring in Bill Gramatica for a tryout; the punter has

a feud with the Gramatica family.
Despite all that, and despite using a seventh-round pick in this year's draft to take punter Paul Ernster, the Broncos decided to give Sauerbrun a chance after a drawn-out contract negotiation with the punter and his agent.

Details of the contract were not released, but it had been reported that Sauerbrun was seeking a deal that would pay more of the $3.9 million owed on the last three years of his contract up front in exchange for reducing the annual salary.

We needed a good punter and as long as we have the contract stipulations in place to keep this guy in line, i don't mind giving him his money up front.

The special teams should be improved and all throughout the team we've stayed pretty consistant this offseason. I think we have a chance to do well vs. a very tough schedule.

Orange:

Where did you get the stats that have 6 of Ss punts blocked? NFL.com has him with no career blocks.

I'd go with nfl.com. I just saw this and posted it without even thinking about the site it was coming off of.

If you could call him that. Those poor schmucks in Carolina. :flush:

I think this is great. Now I won't have to cover my eyes everytime our punter steps on the field.

I don't know why you guys are so worried about this Ernster kid. There still is a chance he really blows. If he doesn't they will find away to keep him. Either way its still a winning deal for Denver, but when it comes down to a 3 time pro bowler vs a rookie that has only punted ONE year his college career I think its a no brainer. From what I read anyways Denver drafted him because he has a huge leg on kickoffs. To me that means the have every intent on keeping him if he is good at it.

The question which kicker will get in trouble faster Sauerbrun or Janikowski. I'm
betting on my fellow Pole.

Jano is a nice boy.

The fact that he has a feud with the Gramatica Midget Brigade makes him okay in my book.

I had plenty to say about the punter last year....nothing that I could repeat on this board without getting reprimanded by TJ though (see "Clean It Up" thread).

Quiettiger- completely agree with your quick off-season overview except for one... "upgraded QB depth--check"? Okay, so we kept Kannel, Mauck and VP, 2 of which should be better with a year under their belt, but the only depth we added is Freihauf... personally I don't think he'll see a snap in the regular season... ever. I may eat those words some day...

On Todd the roid--Love the addition. Think I'd get in trouble if I shipped some roid cream to Dove Valley to help keep that average so high?

Just ask yourself one question, Who would you rather have Sauerbrun or Micah Knorr?

Ship it to Freihauf. He can play dumb rookie sharing his goodies. He needs some meat on those bones.

I could rant all frigging season about how sick I am about the Broncos refusing to develop rookie quarterbacks. What good is a complicated system when every year you have to find some veteran to back up the only guy on your team who knows how to run it? They need depth under center not more stop gap measures.

FYI: I'm also against some safety labels if for nothing else to clean up the gene pool. Some people should play with power lines or rob gun stores filled with cops. (Darwin awards)

Well the Bronco brass has definitely not sat on their hands this off season and have tried to make moves that would help the team. Hopefully they all pan out. Our special teams and defensive line were our weakest link the last few years and the Broncos definitely tried to fill those areas the best they could so I say Thank You for your effort Bowlen and Shanahan.

I don't see Ernster being kept on the PS and he won't be kept just to kickoff.

I'd like to see a list of salaries for the team and see how many players are paid less than sourdoughboy.

OH NO THEY REALLY DIDN'T TRADE BAKER DID THEY?

Indy drafted Dave Rsyner from Michigan State to be a kick off specialist. They said they are keeping three kickers on the roster. Rayner will kick off and back up as a place kicker and punter. I believe Rayner broke all of Morton Anderson's records at MSU.

This looks good. They decided to upgrade the worst squad on the team. Ok,

Todd, welcome to kicker heaven. If Denver can make Micah Knorr special teams player of the week, it can make you HOF worthy.

Well, your set of stats may be right after all. I notice the Bronco web site quotes the same stats as what you posted.

If so, it's something to chew on. Six blocks in the last 4 years is not good. But then, I'm just a worry wart type.

Ernster on the practice squad? How about the IR? Shanny likes to stash a couple there too.

The real Achilles heel on special teams has been the coverage unit. You really can't blame the punter for blocks either, unless this fatso is slow, which might be the case.

Sourbrat did KOs for the Panthers instead of Kasay, right?

From what I know Kasay is the KOS for the Panthers...atleast he was when he kicked the ball out of bounds against the Pats in the Super Bowl two years ago...:cuss:
