Maybe after '06.
Ashley will go over 75 this year, Rod will drop to 60 or so and Darius will up his total to around 50.

I never cared much for WR stats except for TDs. If Lelie and Watts can show up as red zone targets then that'll be good enough for me. If the defense thinks they're good enough to haul in TD passes if covered one on one then it'll change our options and give our red zone offense a huge boost, not to mention opening things up for the running game.

If Jake could throw to Rod every down, he would. Rod is his security blanket.
It's gonna take awhile before Jake gets that comfortable with anyone else, much less Watts.

I doubt Rod will drop off that much. Ashley has reception totals of 35, 37, and 54 in his three years. Rod had 89, 74, and 79 over that same span. Darius had 31 last year which is fewer than any of Ashley's totals. Two things will surprise me if Rod ends the year at #3. Darius and Ashley will both have to increase their receptions to 60+, something Ashley still hasn't achieved. Rod will decrease his receptions to the 50s. That is a huge drop considering the fact that Rod hasn't slipped below the 70s since his 2nd year!

Consider, on this offense you will have Smith, Lelie, Watts, Putzier, Bell, Johnson. Alot of players the ball can go to. Alot of headaches for opposing defenses. However, Rod Smith is the one player who you can count on to get open on third down, it is highly unlikely he slips to the third receiver spot, unless its by design, and you have him going over the middle against slow LB's and 3rd or 4th cb's.

I think it's a year early. Most WRs these days don't seem to really emerge until their third year ... assuming that Watts emerges at all.
And I think that Rod's longetivity will be helped by relieving him of special teams duties.

It's amusing how little some people know about football. You don't just move a #1 to a #2 or especially a three.
They all practice certain routes. That's why when we threw total crap in for SOB you wondered why he struggled after all the injuries several years ago. It was a Chinese Fire Drill. Noone ran their routes right.
Believe it or not, you might take the 3 to one, but Watts isn't ready. That's why I want a veteran #1 like Rod Gardener cheap to move to number one in case Rod Smith might go down.
You don't move your number two on his routes, you just go to him more. In many cases, the number two can produce better than the number one due to coverage.
I keep telling people we need a number one on FA day. Is Issac Bruce still out there or Ike Hilliard? We don't need a 3 to replace a 2 or whatever. You need a vet #1 that can at least pretend to get open on the primary.
You don't move Lelie to #1 if Rod Smith gets injured. Not this year at least.

Denver has never handled these moves well from a political standpoint either (see Lelie and Eddie). Shanny would have a tough time telling Rod that he is #3 even if (huge if) Watts is out performing him. Rod would almost have to ask for it.

Mock,
Ike Hilliard a #1? The guy hasn't caught a TD in like 20 games....

Not one of these threads. Isn't it a little early for this. I don't think we got into this until training camp last year. I remember people saying that Watts was going to be #1, and Smith #2. There has been no signs of Watts taking Smith's spot. Lets at least wait until the season to make these type of predictions. Chances are Watts needs one more year of learning. Good thing he's not needed to become an impact player yet.

You dare challenge the great Mock why did you not know Shanny himself calls Mock for advice on occasion.

Are you predicting that Rod goes down with an injury??? That's the only plausible scenario to actually result in that happening.

I just don't see a discussion here. There have been no signs that indicates this. If Watts looks great when the season starts (not the preseason), and Smith looks old, then we can talk about this. But at this point there are no signs that point to Watts being ready, and Smith losing that last step.

I JUST THINK THIS KID Watts IS GOING TO BE ONE HELL OF AN nfl RECEIVER THAT' S ALL

what a trouble maker.....first baja wants to burry Rod Smith, now he wishes injury on Rod Smith.... Nnyah!
I think Rod will have a fine season I just think Watts will be hard to keep off the field this season especially late in the season

With all due respect, the only way Rod slips to #2 (much less #3) is if he's injured.
Hopefully you're right about Watts having that much potential, though.

Smith to third receiver eh? No chance in hell.
Put me with the others on this one who say injury is the only way Rod loses the #1 spot

BS - Niether of those guys can take the beating going over the middle. Lelie has proved he belongs. Watts has plenty left to prove.

That's the dumbest thing I've heard this off-season. How would this even be possible. The consistent 3rd option? Not possible

Craziest damn thing I've read in a long while...
Barring injuries - Rod will lead the team in catches. Should top 1,000 yards. Who knows how the TDs will be spread out.

Darrius Watts is a wannabe. I think he'd have to prove himself as deserving a roster spot before we're putting him in front of the most prolific receiver in Broncos history.
I don't see it. I'm hoping Watts can prove to be a worthy third option, before I'm ready to move him up on the depth chart.
Now this is what I call a Rod Smith appreciation thread!
Beware the changing of the guard in the wide receiver ranks

I will wager you will be singing another tune by mid season andJake will prove you silly too.

The only way Jake can prove me silly is by raising his game for more than one year at a time. Jake could have a great year, win it all this year, and go back to being Jake the Fake the next season.

Coaching is the changing factor with Jake and he will not regress, he will be good this year and the driving force next year and into the foreseeable future

Usually your posts are more thought out than this one. No way Rod will have this big of a drop off after just one season.
At the end of the season Rod will have more catches and more Yards than Watts. He will have more catches than Lelie but Lelie will have more yards.
This is the kind of statement that make me ask others to just say NO. Rod is the best over all player on the team, #3 wr, put down the crack pipe and step closer to the window :)

Fine, bad example. What I am saying is that certain players are coached to play in certain situations and master certain routes. You don't take your great #2 and push him into a #1 midseason. You keep your #2 where he was and replace the #1 with what might be, the subpar player, but you don't want a WR to move midseason.
That was the point. For example. If Rod goes down, do you move Lelie from 2 just because he's your second best reciever? No. I would move Watts to the spot and bring in another reciever that has been practicing the 3.
Yeah, it's draconian, but it let's lelie run his routes and really be the main reciever as a 2. All the other recievers are learning 3 routes, so that's no problem. You just don't take an x reciever into a y. Ike Hilliard was just an example.
