FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Patriots released veteran nose tackle Keith Traylor today.

Traylor, 35, signed with the Patriots on March 31, 2004 and started 10 of 16 games for the team last season. The 6-foot-2-inch, 340-pound nose tackle was credited with 33 total tackles during the season.

He was originally drafted by the Denver Broncos in the third round (61st overall) of the 1991 NFL draft as a linebacker and earned all-rookie honors that season. He made the transition to defensive line in 1994 and became a starter in the trenches in 1997.

In 13 NFL seasons, he played for six teams and started 127 of 187 games. He has amassed 459 career tackles (316 solo), including 13 sacks. He has two career interceptions, which he returned for 129 yards (64.5 yard average). He returned the first career interception 62 yards for a touchdown in 1997. Four years later, he picked off his second pass and returned it 67 yards.

Wilfork has a big oppurtunity now to be the man. They recently signed Santonio Thomas, if he can stay healthy he will also be a good run stuffer.

Be na interesting match-up if Santonio Thomas sees some playing time in their season opener against the Oakland Raiders, he'd likely be lining up on Jake Grove.

I remember Traylor's Mom died 4 days before the '97 playoff game against the Chefs. He went to the funeral and then came back and played a great game.

whatever chef fan ever says all we have to say is "14-10"

He was our answer for Ted Washington's departure. Wilfork will be the man now.

If Traylor does hang 'em up and retire he's had a good career, huh? Am I right in saying he has 3 rings? (2 Denver, 1 NE)

I'm still trying to figure out how we drafted a LB that wound up at 340.

When he was drafted I believe he weighed 256lbs. I think it took him 3 years to get to DT weight. I remember his rookie year Reeves lined Traylor up as a FB in goaline situations.
