View Full Version : Jim Rome on the Clarett pick
FADERPROOF

I normally hate Jim Rome, but I knew this would be classic when I saw that he was going to talk about Clarett to the Broncos, here goes:
"Mike Shanahan has been drinking a little too much of his own running back Kool Aid, I know they have had recent success with their RB's but they're now acting like they can pick up any slug off the streets and turn him into 1200 yards of production. Maurice Clarett will not be an immediate impact, he hasnt played in 2 years, has a ton of baggage, and a glacier like 40 time.
I understand wanting to take a flyer on the guy, but not a 3rd round pick, Denver was better off taking their 4th cornerback of the day."

I accidentally listened to Rome a few days before the Super Bowl. He was saying something about how Terrell Owens would hurt the Eagles if he played. There was no way he could heal up and help his team, so TO was just being selfish.

I wish the media in whole would just throw Shanny out of this equation. This was a Turner pick and after the work he has done for us I wouldn't care if he wanted Charles Manson in the third. Turner just get Bell, Dayne and MC running like all the others and give us more players to trade away for picks and players :)

Another thing, do him and that Blind Date host Roger Lodge have something going on. He's on the damn forum everyday or everyweek. Lodge said the Broncs should have taken Darren Sproules w/ the third round pick. Does he watch college football or follow the NFL w/ comments like that.

Let us forget Rome! He is a ZERO in the equation of our concerns.
The RB picture is really going to be something else this year. Lets start with Bell. As of now, according to Shanny, he is the #1 starter at this position. Now come Q and Anderson. Both recovering from serious injuries. According to reports, both are coming along fine and should be ready by camp. Off the subject a little bit, these injuries along with others might be the reason the Broncos have moved their mini-camps to the month of July this year. Interesting.
Hold overs of Sapp and Miree will have to be accounted for. But new to the picture and a real puzzeler, is the addition of Dayne and Clarett to the preverbable equation.
My thoughts are that they will still keep six RB's, 2 FB's, choose from Johnson, Anderson and Miree. One will go. TB's Bell, then toss a coin for who makes up the next three. Anderson, Q, Dayne, Clarett, Sapp. My bet is on Q, Dayne and Clarett and Anderson takes the second spot at FB. Of course a lot will depend on pre-season. Miree may be the guy at FB and they might try and sell Anderson to someone else.
To me, it looks like Denver is loaded again this year with an "abudonza" of backs.

Yep. Say what you will, but Clarett is far more talented than the likes of Olandis Gary, Mike Anderson, and Reuben Droughns. If he can make those guys 1000 rushers, he can do it and then some with Clarett. And let's stop it with the slow 40 time, OK? TD wasn't any better, ran a 4.7 or something like that. This isn't track.

I find it funny when people get so riled up about Jim Rome, I dont like the guy but I know better than to take what he has to say to heart.
It's like Howard Stern, he is controversial and say the things that will draw the ratings, whether good or bad he knows he'll be talked about. Does Rome really think that way about Clarett? Maybe, but we dont know for sure. He is highly opinionated and takes a stand on everything because he knows he'll get listeners.
This thread might be a good case study, say if someone we dont know said the same things, would there be as much opinions and hate towardas what he had to say?

rhymesayer, mad props to you in general but i must say that rome's takes can be pretty lame. i think what bothers me is that in his world he gets to be a smack-talking wiseass but everyone else has to be a jehova's witness to get his approval. it's much like when watermock calls someone a flavor clown imo. also, his "takes", while delivered in his caustic perfectionist dialect, sometime wreak of sports media establishment views. that said, sometimes i totally agree with the man. and hell, any non-X Games athlete or celeb who makes it big from sandiego is pretty cool in my book. have you ever heard phil hendries' impersonation of rome? it's hillarious and hyperbolic in the mold of will farrell's gw bush....

How about a cast-off from Detroit, and our second string full back? That might fit the bill by many as a "slug off the streets." He made 1200 yards, missing the first six games, of course. :dummy:

That doesn't give him license. I was forced to listen to him if I wanted a sports channel, and found him semi-amusing for about 15 minutes. He's an absolute idiot.

Why don't you stay on the phone for half an hour and ask him about it. I consider Cold Pizza better quite honestly. The guy says the same thing over and over and over again, screens his calls, has been cancelled twice on ESPN the whore, and again is an idiot that offends his guests.

Actually, he's not right on the money. As usual, the prick just goes for whatever will get over with his listeners who are always looking to rip on someone for anything.
He mentions Shanahan's "recent success with RB's." Ummm, try 10 years of success with RB's actually. Terrell Davis, Olandis Gary, Mike Anderson, Clinton Portis & Reuben Droughns have all excelled in a Broncos uniform in case you hadn't noticed Jim.
Stick to Tonya Harding and OJ smack Rome, it's all you're really good for anymore.

He's already admitted that Shanahan has done well with running backs but he also said everything about Clarett that is true. Clarett hasnt done anything to prove any of that wrong so i would say his evaluation is on target. now of course, its up to Clarett to prove everyone wrong but so far he has done nothing.

I agree that Clarett has made plenty of mistakes and that he's got a great chance to be a complete and total bust on and off the field. But the fact of the matter is that Bobby Turner, the member of the Broncos coaching staff whose work has been nearly flawless, sees something in this kid. To me, that carries some weight.
Clarett has a lot to prove and he's also been very humble and grateful since the Broncos announced his name as the last pick of day 1. It's not much, but it's a start and he's getting off on the right foot.

I think of Jim Rome as a sports version of Bill O'Reilly. He pretends he's objective and more intelligent than the average listener. Howard Stern doesn't pretend to be any of these things. He just tries to shock the listeners.

Yea, i hate Rome but he is pretty much on the money here. No, he is not. He acts like Shanny and the Broncos have hit on 1 or 2 backs. It is ten years worth of backs. 5 different RB have had at least 1,000 and some of them with far less talent than Clarett. Droughns from last year is one and Gary is another.

Yo Genius, try to keep up ok. look at my post following that one and it explains why he is on target.

04-26-2005, 11:02 AM
I watched Rome's show on ESPN and his point was why does Shanny think he can turn any back into a 1,000 yard rushers and that he believes his own hype. Well, Genius, I hope you and Rome keep up.
When a team has rushed more times, for more yards with the best yard per carry average than any one else since 1995(When Shanny became head coach) and when you have had 5 different backs rush for at least 1,000 yards and the highest pick you spent on them was a 2nd, it's not hype. It is fact.
Sure he has to prove he has to grow up, but as far as on the field goes I don't see what he has to prove. As for his 40 time, Rome doesn't tell you but Jim Armstrong pointed it out in today's post pointed out that Clarett ran a 4.61 the next time he was
timed, which is faster than Terrell Davis.
So when it comes to actually playing football I don't think he has much to prove. All he needs is time to knock off the rust.
I wish we would have waited to take him, just because they had other needs, but it sounds like Dallas would have taken him in the 4th if the Broncos hadn't grabbed him at 101.
