Whether or not you care or not, I have been told from a source close to the broncos organization who the 2 offensive and 2 defensive players the broncos had their eyes on in round 1. The Denver papers and Shanny wouldn't name them at his press conference. You'll recall Shanny said they felt much better about trading pick 25 after seeing these guys go before their pick.
Antrell Rolle #8
Carlos Rogers #9
Matt Jones #21 (reports that we liked this kid a lot before the draft were accurate)
Mark Clayton #22
Makes that trade with Washington even better than we all thought it was already!

No way were they going to get Rolle or Rogers at #25.

Like OD said, they were smoking crack on the 2 corners, but I could see them wanting Jones and Clayton.
Which makes me wonder, if this is true, why no WRs drafted?

Rogers could've slipped that far. A lot of "experts" had him going round 2. I really think he only cracked top ten because there's such a premium for corners these days.

I'll let Shanahan answer that ...
"There's a few guys out there that we felt could help our football team, but our priority was the cornerback position," Shanahan said. "Our priority was our punt return and our kickoff return. If a wide receiver would have been there at our pick that we thought could really come in and compete with the guys we got, then we would have taken that wide receiver.
"But the wide receivers that were available couldn't beat anybody out on our roster, they wouldn't have made our team."

I guess they thought Matt Jones (with 5 career catches) would make a greater immediate impact than someone like Vincent Jackson who has the size, speed and experience. I think they thought Jackson would fall further than he did and then at 97 didn't see anyone they particularly liked.

Dude, I don't know. I'm guessing Shanny wanted a kick/punt returner. After that, it's a game of who is there.

You are right……they were looking for a dude to return punts with their first pick…….and yeah Vincent doesn’t fit that bill

It's pretty obvious now that they went into this draft looking mainly for ST contributers.
Pick #1: Punt Returner
Pick #2: Gunner
Pick #3: Gunner
Pick #4: Media Diversion
Pick #5: Long Snapper
Pick #6: Punter/kickoff guy.

Kinda makes ya wonder what had happened had Roscoe not been taken right before us...

The Reverend, Rogers was a first round pick from midway through this past football season and there was no way in HELL he was going to be there at number 25.
He was the nation's best corner this past year (he won the Jim Thorpe Award) and teams only threw to his side 25% of the time in AU's games this past year.
He also shut down Reggie Brown of UGA this year and did a admirable job in run defense this year.
He was a second round pick as of April of 2004, but he climbed the charts this past year.

Shany had williams for the first pick, maybe he would have picked him with the next pick

Fabian Washington. He got burners at CB later in the draft. Why wouldn't he get the fastest guy in the draft in the first round. I think shany has a list of the fastest guys from the combine and bases his picks off that. then he defers the RB selection to Turner

Shanny said that he did not feel there was a WR at the point they drafted that would beat out what they already had...I agree.
Wonder if BJ may make an impact this year?

I think BJ can make an impact, but knowing how Denver under utilizes the 3rd, 4th & 5th receivers I really don't ever see the 3rd, 4th or 5th guy ever making too much of an impact under this system, granted there really hasn't been a standout 3rd receiver here since the 3 amigos... how many times have you seen the Broncos line up 3 or 4 wide w/ 1 back in the backfield and if the 1 & 2 guys are covered they ALWAYS dump it off to the rb.. way too often.. IMO they don't give the 3rd, 4th, or 5th guy much of a chance.. case in point Triandos Luke, great hands, I don't ever recall him dropping a pass last year (punts are another story) but yet he barely even saw the field last year, now Watts dropped some crucial balls, but its like they completely give up going to the 4th guy..

Wow. I knew he couldn't pass on Clayton at that spot. Clayton is a Bronco WR plus. Man...

I think the problem is that Jackson didn't have a great senior bowl week against better competition. His routes were sloppy, he couldn't get seperation and he dropped some passes.
Jones on the other hand just switched to WR that week, caught the ball well and excelled against veteran college CB's.
Denver puts a huge ammount of their draft stock in the senior bowl.

Well, this does clear up a bit more why we traded out of round one - clearly Shanahan thought (rightly so) that none of those players would be available at the 25 spot, and wasn't prepared to move up.

Maybe they look to June 1st for a WR. Anyone have anything on possible cuts?

Your source was correct. Denver had been talking trade with the Redskins trying to move up to 9. But things broke down, more like Pryce came to his sense's, and Denver was then going to stay. Anyway the Skins still had interest in the 25. They made the offer and Dever felt it was a solid deal and pulled the trigger.
I had hoped a trade with Pryce could have been worked out, but things change fast in Dove valley lately. I really like Rogers he's going to be good.

I could see them trying to trade up to number 9, but I'm happy w/ the way things turned out.

My source also tells me the corner Fox has the inside track on the nickel job. Very high on him. They couldn't believe he as still there so they took a 3rd corner. The nickel position going into things is between Fox and Williams in several guys opinion.

Foxworth is a very intelligent guy too. Graduated from HS in three years with honors and from college in 3-1/2 years. At least he can run and learn the playbook.
