The Spurs will suffocate the Nuggets in their half court offense. Their lack of a post threat will cost them in this series. The Spurs, under Tim Duncan, has NEVER lost to a team in the playoff that didn't have a dominant post player.

However, Tim Duncan did manage to get outplayed by European midgets in the Olympics, so he may be due for a playoff failure as well.
In all seriousness, if Camby's 100%, then I'll take our chances, if he's not, San Antonio wins in 5 or 6. It's really that simple. Camby's the only guy in the Western Conference tall enough and more athletic then Duncan and he will run the floor, pushing that ankle to its limit. If Camby can't go, we're F-d.

Well, Tim looked good the last couple of games. I am going to say he's around 85 to 90%. 85 to 90% is still good enough to beat the Nuggets.

First off, the Intl game is different than the NBA game and the Intl teams sagged on him playing while the perimeter guys couldnt hit a shot. It wasnt TD's fault entirely that they lost. Did you even watch the olympics last year Jake's finger And they call the game differently.
TD's the league's best power forward, and Camby is nowhere near the player. Sure he's athletic, and could present problems, but if TD is 80-90% healthy, they will double team him.
They may be best equipped to handle TD w Nene, Camby and Martin, but this is TD and he's been through the playoff battles.

Very true, sports commentators were laughing their asses off because we couldnt hit anything from beyond the arc. even our fundamentals were horrible as the European teams made us look silly.

I did watch the Olympics, and Tim Duncan was embarrassing to me, as an American, since he couldn't post up 6-4 soccer players. It was entirely his fault he got outplayed by midgets, not that they lost. And I'll always think he's a candy-arse for that. And a lot less intelligent then he's given credit for, since he couldn't adjust his game to take advantage of his massive talent edge.
But hey, he's well-spoken and a neat guy, so we'll give him a pass.
The point, about Camby, is he can make Duncan get up and down the floor, and if he's only in the 80% range, you're going to have a long two weeks. Unless Camby isn't healthy, which is definitely a possibility, in which case this isn't a real series. (Marcus did actually carry a team to a Final Four, so he did do something Duncan failed at miserably. I'm sure it was how the game was called those four days, too.)
And on behalf of Terrell Davis and Tony Dorsett, I beg you to stop calling a basketball player TD.

04-24-2005, 11:46 AM
Jake Finger, I normally do not partake in trash talking, so I wont say anything back to you on your last post.
Marcus Camby was brilliant in college (led a team w/ Donte Bright, Carmello Travieso, and others to the Final Four in 96, which was taken back by the NCAA due to Camby taking money from a agent) and has become a productive player in the NBA.
I will only converse w/ Nuggets fans that are classy. It no point to respond to your last post.

omg, you are a idiot. Duncan can work rings around Camby. how many rings does Camby have again? yea, thought so. as for Duncan cough cough failing miserably in College look again. he was the only player that got them that far and when they played Kentucky it took 3 guys to shut him down. Camby lost to one on one battles. try doing some homework before opening your piehole. ****ing idiot.

Its funny how he brings up College basketball into this, when that happened almost a decade ago.
TD was amazing in college and lost to a gamed Stanford team in the 97 West Region Second Round.
He brings up that comparision and as a college basketball junkie, that is funny.

Clearly you don't know anything about basketball, especially Tim Duncan with that statement. The Olympic or International rules allow teams to pack the lanes. This not only affects post players like Tim Duncan, but also penetrating guards who are custom to seeing the lane open in the NBA. That's just not the case in International play. But going back to Tim Duncan, he not a player that is "athletically" gifted. Meaning, he is not going to be player that can "physically" dominate opponents with "leaping" dunks and put backs. Tim needs space to be effective in the low block. Rarely, you will see Tim Duncan fade away from a double team on the low block at the drop of a dime without a couple of dribbles. Tim just doesn't have that kind of talent, period.

Why are the Olympics being brought up in this?
Team USA got beat because we couldn't break the 2-3 zone. How do you break a 2-3 zone, you ask? By hitting outside jump shots consistently! We couldn't do it. That wasn't Tim Duncan's fault.
Timmy D is the best player in the NBA, period. Even at 85% he'll be the best player on the floor. The Spurs will win this series, in 5 or maybe 6 games. The Nuggets, IMO, don't have a real legitimate shot at beating them, unless somehow we get red hot and stay that way for 4 games.
However, we're playing good basketball, so it least should be interesting. I don't think any of the games will be blowouts.

The Spurs are gonna be PISSED. We just went in their arena, where they have the best home record in the NBA, and punched them in the mouth. They're bloodied, but not down. Every game is gonna go down ot the last minute in this series. Plain and simple, we caught Duncan on a bad night. That won't happen many more times, if any other time, in this series. We took advantage. We HAD to.

I would love to see Jake get the same advantage .. if these Browncos work out like i hope , Jake could have a rock solid D , and play with a lead

Sorry I couldnt post during the game, I was working the desk shift tonite at Kalamazoo Gazette.
I did manage to see most of the game. I dont make excuses w/ injuries or anything like that. TD was 75-80% out there and he had some good looks at the basket. BTW, every team is not healthy when the playoffs begin after the grind of the 82 game season.
I was impressed by how Denver close the second quarter. That won them the game. They were down by eight and scored eight points in 20 seconds to tie the game. They won the game on that Andre Miller's three-point heave at the buzzer.
In the second half, I didnt understand by GRob did not play more. I know he chunked up some shots early in the fourth, but no one on the team was hitting their shots. That meltdown was gut-wrenching to watch. Give a lot of credit to the Nuggs D. and their clutch offensive rebounding. They got a lot of them in the second half and that wore down the Spurs D late in the game and Melo got those big offensive rebounds.
I was impressed by how the Nuggs closed out the penetration lanes off the pick and roll when Manu tried to go to the basket in the second half. Spurs didnt adjust.
I was SCARED AS HELL COMING INTO THIS SERIES and now I'm terrified. Game 2 is a must win. I hate to use cliches, but it is. They cant go down 0-2 into Denver. This series will be over if Spurs lose the next game.
They have now lost five straight playoff games, four dating back to last year's meltdown to the Lakers.
The Spurs need Barry, GRob, or someone to step up in scoring. I was shocked Pop did not use GRob down the stretch.

that's odd. when they were barely escaping in the regular season you kept telling me "SoCal, Burress is injured".
Burress? I hate that flava clown. I have WAY MORE respect for Lelie than that "Leon" the clown.

I am not surprised, ro_50. The Spurs have a bad habit of losing the 1st game in the opening series of the playoffs. I am not worry about the Nuggets, but the health of Duncan. How many minutes did Duncan play tonight?

I don't have ANY respect for a guy who talks about how many catches and dollars he wants directly after a BIG playoff loss. :kiddingme

TD did play 35 minutes. He was prob 80% but missed a lot of shots he normally makes.
It was frustrating.
I've seen this before in 99 when they lost to the TWolves in the second game and in 03 when they dropped that game to the Suns on that Marbury running three-point shot at the buzzer.
They been here before and know what it takes to get out of it. But they have also lost five games in a row in the playoffs.

Yeah, I mean, they're 6-2 in playoff openers with Duncan according to the ESPN recap.

They are really 5-2 now w/ TD when he plays in the first game of the playoffs.
They won in 98 over the Suns in game 1, in 99 won over the Twolves, 00 lost to the Suns (TD did not play in that series w/ a injury), 01 won over Twolves, 02 won over Sonics, 03 lost to Suns, 04 won over Grizzs, and today lost.

Miller was nails tonight, I've got the game on tivo since I just came home from work, all I could do was watch the nba.com gamecast. Melo seemed to have had a rough night, 4 points and 3 fouls at the half. To think the Nuggets went into San Antonio and won without any help from their superstar is absolutely amazing. People can say Duncan wasn't much of a factor well neither was Melo.

Melo needs to get used to defense getting tougher on him, and calls coming less frequently. If he thought he didn't get calls during the season, it only gets worse now. The refs simply don't call fouls they might in the regular season in the playoffs.
Plus Bowen is a flat out stud on D.

You know, as a personal note to this series, I'm a big fan of Dermarr Johnson. I have followed his career since a highly touted kid coming out of high school and then he went to Cincy.
He was drafted by the Hawks and I use to go get autographs earlier this decade (mostly for my little cousins who are age 6) and I ran into him a couple times and we ended up talking for about 10 mins. A great kid and a nice guy.
My heart dropped when he got into that nasty car accident and his recovery is amazing. He almost lost his life. I'm so happy that the Nuggs gave him a chance after his turn w the Knicks last year. This kid a survivor.

If Tim Duncan is not at least 90%, the Spurs are in trouble.
The Boy Wonder :super:
Told you man if Duncan isnt at full strength the Nuggs could take advantage of that. the commentators kept saying that the Spurs will get better as the series progresses but so does the Nuggets motivation. plus, Karl is no slouch as a coach so they arent going to fold up the tent anytime soon.

Something that was very noticeable after the game was the overall change in attitude, maturity and leadership on this team from a year ago.
Last year they were just happy to be in the playoffs and it showed. After they won game 3 against Minnesota they were brash & cocky (as were the T-Mutts). This year is a different story.
After the game there was no arrogance, no bragging, no verbal barbs.....hell, there wasn't really any smiling in the postgame interviews. It was pretty much the standard company line during the playoffs. "It's just one game." "This series is a long way from being over." "We need to play even better in game 2."
But that's indicative of a team that has matured, has a smart, strong coach and a team that expects to win. They may not win this series, but the way they carried themselves on and off the court tonight shows just how far this team has come from a year ago.

You will win the series.
Denver at home is very strong.
Waffle will then claim he was a Heat fan all along and had "only a passing interest in San Antonio".
Waffle will then get bitchslapped across the whole board....again.
Go Nuggets, you guys are the hottest team in the league right now. Keep it up. This could be a special run.
Hilarious! SoCal and Spider, you better join the wagon. Next stop, Seattle.

Honestly, short of Duncan never getting his game on the Nugs had no real chance in this series. Even without Duncan I'd bet that Ginobili and Parker could have pushed it to a game seven. However, that being said, I think Denver will be a top two or three team in the West within the next two seasons. They'd be there already if they had signed Arenas instead of Miller like they'd wanted, but now they still need to add more offense. Anthony is ok, but his poor FG% hurts. Martin is a good secondary scorer, but he can't be counted on as a featured threat. If they can add one elite offensive weapon they'll be a lot better team. If I recall Micheal Redd is an FA this year, if they could add him they'd be one of the elite teams in the league.
The Suns will surprise people as well I think, despite already being so highly rated, because people think they can't keep it up. Everyone is used to defense winning in the playoffs, but thats because we've only seen these fast breaking teams that can't manage any half court offense, like the Nets the last few years. The Suns don't fall victim to that and are actually a very deadly half court team. They might not play a ton of defense, but its REAL hard to slow the game down on them because then they just roll out the shooters and start lighting you up that way. They're a throwback to the Bird/McHale Celtics and Showtime Lakers. Not as good as those all time teams but good enough to beat any team in this league.

I'm forutnate the Spurs got out of the first round against Denver. The Nuggs are just one good 2G away from making the leap. I think if Voshon returns next year, the team holds the option on his contract and they keep D Johnson, they can make a decent two guard system.
I'm still high on DJ's abilities and he just needs more PT cuz he can stick the three and take it to the hoop.
As for the Sonics, they pose a team the opposite of the Nuggs: a great shooting team, but I think the Spurs can take them in 6 or 7, but they have to do a good job Rashard Lewis, his size and ability to hit the j poses problems for the Spurs.

I thought the Suns were very impressive. That Vermacelli guy was lights out. They didn't miss a 3 the whole series, we had Boinky throwing up hopers on one leg.
Getting the early lead was an illusion. Melo doesn't match up as well inside and shouldn't even been used there, he is much better in space. Boinky isn't a point guard, tell me the last time a 5-5 point guard made a real impact.
