NFL Draft Boards Are Moving
By TFY Draft Preview
Date: Apr 21, 2005
Two big defensive names falling down boards? And what are the Redskins thinking about now with two picks in the first round? Here are some breaking stories.
Oklahoma defensive end Dan Cody has been taken off several teams draft boards. Sources have told us that a bout with depression four years ago has caused a lot of concern amongst general managers. While some view it as a phase of adolescence and feel it would be foolish to penalize Cody for something that took place a while ago, it is serious enough in nature that his stock is dropping.
Another defender falling down boards is Clemson corner Justin Miller. It is not Miller's recent arrest that has caused concern rather some recent horrible interviews has given. One team we spoke with said Miller was not out the door five minutes before his name was removed from their board after a horrendous sit down interview.
What will the Redskins do with two picks in the initial frame? Look towards Auburn as the Washington brass made a major scouting trip to watch some Tigers workout just recently. There is speculation the Skins will use the pick acquired from Denver, number 25, to choose Tiger quarterback Jason Campbell. There is also a belief Carlos Rogers has jumped up Washington's draft board and could be their pick at number 9.

If either of these guys are there at 56 what do you think? Too good to pass up at that spot?
I would think that if Miller was there at 56, the team would abandon whoever else they were looking at and Shanny would jump on it.

I still dont like the idea of a corner with our first selection but Miller at 56 is very good value, esp. because of his return value. Interesting issue.

Miller would be hard to pass up thats for sure. It really comes down to what he said and how he acted. Maybe he falls like Poole did last year.

I'd like to know two things.... first, what was he arrested for? Second, what was he saying that was so poor during his interviews. If he's going into interviews telling GM's and Coaches that his $hi! don't stink and that he will practice only on the third Tuesday of every other month then why waste time with him?
That being said, if he was arrested for some weak domestic dispute b/c his ex girlfriend wants to get rich when he gets his pay day then I wouldn't hold it against him. Same with his interviews. If he is coming accross wrong it may be b/c he is misspoken. One of the smartest coaches in the history of college sports is/was Dean Smith. He ensured that each player on the Heels team attended Speech classes so that they were prepared for such interviews..... with the media and with potential employers. You'd think these kids would learn and follow suit.

As far as value..... NO DOUBT! He is perhaps the best combo Punt Return/Kick Return/Corner Back in the draft! Yes, I know Pac Man is good, but he isn't a punt returner in the same class as Miller. Antonio Perkins is not the Kickoff returner that Miller is. If Miller is there at 56 I'd hope that we would lock him up!

No way. Draft Vincent Jackson. This guy isn't going to make it past the second round, so take him at 56.

I'd take Cody for sure. A #56 for this guy? Do it. He is a lot like Tyler Brayton.

Not good, not good at all. This guy can't even blame alcohol for his behavior. Sounds like a king sized ego and a guy that feels he's above the law. I'd still be willing to take a shot at him if available at 56, but I wouldn't be disappointed if he left the board at 55 saving us from having to make a decision on him.

I've been a Dan Cody supporter for a while now, but you have to admit that there are several more important needs to address right now. Still, a guy that was once projected to go to the Faid at #7 overall would be great value at 56. I wouldn't be upset but I'd also prefer to get a CB or WR with that pick.
Perkins, Miller, Jackson, or either of the top 3 OG's should they fall would be ideal. Cody falling in behind all of those guys.
There's also a pretty good chance that Luis Castillo is available near the end of the 3rd round. I read earlier that scouts are having a very difficult time diagnosing his Senior season b/c they don't know if he was on 'roids or not. Either way, his stock is dropping b/c of the possitive test and reports say he will automatically be on the leagues substance abuse policy list and could be tested up to 24 times a year. I'm thinking 3rd round pick for sure now!

I'd pass them up (depending who is available) If Vincent Jackson is not taken.. I say take Jackson and get Adrian McPherson, Stanfod Routt, Ronald Bartell Jr, Jovan Haye, or Bill Swancutt with out 3 3rds.

Miller would be a killer deal at 56, considering our need for a returner. What's crazy is that if he starts falling other teams will probably get spooked wondering what everyone else knows. One problem with that theory though is that I read Oakland is targeting Miller. Oakland is unlikely to be phased by any character or personality issues -- they did take Randy Moss and Warren Sapp -- so if that's true I bet he is still a #1 pick.
Either way, I have decided that Jackson is who I want at 56 is he's available. I don't think he falls to 76. The idea of a big bodied receiver is too good to pass up. Many of the receivers in this draft have MOs like Lelie -- tall and lanky -- and we need a receiver to compliment him and create redzone mismatches. The other guy I really like, although I doubt he falls, is Brodney Poole. Of course, I am still on the Baas bandwagon. So my wish list goes: Jackson, Poole, Baas. However, I think the odds that one of them falls to 56 is only about 50/50.

Yes you have..... and not many people have argued with you. Notice the talk of guys like Williamson, Roddy White, Jerome Mathis and Courtney Roby has all but ceased. I think most of us have finally come to the conclusion that we need another Eddy Mac type to give us 8 yards on 3rd and 7.

Thats kind of why I want that Reggie Brown guy. Tall with good weight behind him too. 4.4 speed doesn't hurt either. Not sure where people have him ranked but if he falls to the Skins third round, Jackson is gone and we pick another position in the second I would love Denver to grab him.

Except Brayton is 35 pounds heavier and ran the 40 in 4.6 instead of 4.8.

Rod has taken on Eddy's role of the tough catch over the middle and the big downfield block. He has done a great job, but he is 35 and Broncs need to bring along his replacement. A skinny kid like Watts can't fill that role and Nate Jackson is not the guy. Jackson, Jones, Murphy, Gibson, Lyman, Brandon Jones and maybe JR Russell might fit the bill from this draft.

Grading System
BIO: All-Conference selection as a senior after posting 51/682/3. Led the team in receiving as a junior registering 44/762 when he originally won All-League honors.
POSITIVES: Fluid, big-play receiver with excellent size/speed numbers. Solid route runner who gets separation from opponents, displays good focus and consistent hands. Adjusts to the errant throw, lays out for the tough grab and snatches the pass away from his frame. Elusive running after the reception, has a burst of speed and works to pick up positive yardage. Positions himself against defenders to make the reception and fights to get separation. Beats opponents in a foot race, tracks the deep throw and easily adjusts running full speed. Occasionally used as a kick returner throughout college.
NEGATIVES: Marginal as a downfield blocker. Has difficulty battling stronger opponents.
ANALYSIS: A tough, hard-working prospect with top athleticism, Murphy has all the intangibles one wants in a first-round choice. That being the case, he has never been overly productive nor really stood out as the "go-to guy" in college. Offers a high upside, which will get him selected during the initial 45 choices.
PROJECTION: Mid Second Round

SCOUTING REPORT
Strengths: Has excellent speed and quickness...Has a decent size and frame...Very athletic and adjusts to the ball well...Physical player...Has good hands and uses them well...A threat to score at anytime...Does a nice job getting open...A big play threat and a playmaker.
Weaknesses: Has been mostly just a deep threat in college and may be a bit....Needs to work on his route running...Isn't a great blocker...Doesn't really create after the catch...Probably not as big as his school lists him.
Notes: A bit of a sleeper whose stock is on the rise...Has some impressive physical tools and his big play ability is exciting...Not a finished product but has been very productive and teams will love his playmaking ability.

No i wouldnt do that to you on purpose, Atlas. But i did find the report interesting just generally for the draft rumor/news so i decided to post it. I had a problem with your boy Miller at 25 but if he is somehow there at 56, i would not have a problem at all. That would be great value. Plus, if we drafted Justin Miller at 56, i think you would be so happy you would put in that special ass avatar again, so for that reason alone i would be very happy if we picked him up at 56, to say nothing of the great value involved. :)

Be like Monty Python and the Holy Grail, except they wouldn't be chanting "Bring out your dead" They would be chanting "Bring out the Ass"
I'd love for him to fall but he can't fall that far. For some Ironic reason I think the Redskins will use Denver's pick and get him(not likely) or the Faiders will get him. I originally thought the Rams would draft him but if he is dropping he'll fall to the Faiders.

I didn't even see this thread until someone posted & bumbed it up.
Interesting...perhaps Cody is the D-lineman the Broncos see slipping within reach...I don't know for certain.
Boy, that would be a tough decision, Miller or Cody if, somehow, some way, it came to that...even more so if a couple WRs the Broncos covet fell into the late second
Regardless, should be fun
I know I'll stop drinking coffee the night before & keep the tranquilizers close
Don't want to be too far out of it...the only comedy relief I'll get is when the Chiefys waste the 15th pick
I think we'll hear the scream from here

I understand why teams would be gun-shy about Cody after the Barrett Robbins incident. I think we can afford to gamble on Cody getting his head straight with Coleman coming back. His potential is probably worth a second or third round pick, if he falls that far. I hope Shanahan is at least keeping him on the radar screen. I'll pass on Miller. It might be more of a project to get him straightened out.

From what I know Miller is cocky but he is not a problem or distraction on the field. He was an academic all american so he isn't stooopid. It ain't gonna matter he won't be there at 56
