View Full Version : Server should speed up soon... (thread about server issues)

I just got off the phone with technical support... Apparently it's a server-wide issue that they are addressing... They've got like 800 different sites crammed onto the same server, apparently, and are starting to get calls. They say they are working on the issue and it should be resolved soon...

I'm pretty sure that we're in the top 5% in activity on the shared server we are on right now... So with the rush of people during the trade news, things went haywire... I've spoken with them about draft day coming up, so hopefully they'll help prepare the server for it...

TJ,
Make up some story about how it's the survivor thread that's making the server lag behind, so you're forced to delete it.

Heh... That thread has already given me a headache tonight, but people seem to be into it. I think it's kind of cool, but it sounds like this season might have gotten a little personal for some...

Fund Raiser: What do you need to create a server dedicated just to keeping the Orange Mane rocking and rolling? Mile High Shack hit on a great idea. Now is a good time to do that. How much ballpark? Right now your server is so slow I feel like I'm time travelling. I think I typed this Wednesday but it's just Tuesday night! How the heck did that happen?!?!
Survivor: I had no idea how much people liked crapping in their own pants. It's too bad some of the side bars aren't coming out. There should be an after Survivor thread so these murderous souls can take a breather. It could catch up some of the spectators and maybe set up a SURVIVOR SLAUGHTERHOUSE: The haunted house theme or something. Whatever...

Seems to run pretty slow at other times also though (off peak usage).
I think the company you're using must have some kind of capacity issues that
effect the Mane at any given time.

Agreed Quiettiger. No reason Taco should have to take the hit on his own. We have alot more members since the last metion of a donation drive came around. We've also had a pretty good influx of members since Taco was given the award for "best fan site of the month" by the Broncos. Anyhow this is the perfect time to kick in a little scratch to update the engine under the hood. If you newer members haven't a chance to donate to the site there is a pay pal link around here somewhere.
My pay pal has been sent.

Hey Taco, If you need any help, I do that kind of stuff (server management, not webmaster). I can help find and manage a new server as long as someone else does the actual website.
If so, send me a message offline.
Fund raiser is a great idea.

I just got off the phone with tech support... AGAIN... They say we should speed back up soon...
This is it... The last straw. The site has simply grown too large for a shared hosting solution. We need our own server... I can't be calling these guys every day to have them get their act together...
I have some money on the side that I'm going to use to act on this ASAP and get us moving in the right direction... Problem is, we also have some liscences that I need to renew... IE. the chat room and the board software... If anyone wants to kick in to help offset the costs that I'm incurring, please visit this thread (http://www.orangemane.com/BB/showthread.php?t=9094). I've always been leery of asking for money. I don't like sending the wrong signals, and additionally, I don't want this place mistaken as a business by the IRS. It's my hobby, and I'm not interested right now in mixing too much business in... Maybe down the road when I get a war chest built up. But it's not even a thought right now.
And I know the enevitable "how much does it cost to run this place" questions will come up. I've been advised before that it's not a good idea to share that information for a variety of reasons. I think I agree with the advice. Let's just say it's not free, and it's going to be even more expensive now. Most server packages I've seen run about $50/month, so do the math and that's a good starting point if you're interested in that aspect.
In any case, I appreciate any donations that come in to help offset costs.
I'm on the case...

Just to sweeten the pot and help pimp out your Broncos rides I'm donating 5 sets like this towards the donation drive. The set will include an old school Broncos license frame, a plastic old school license plate insert, and an old school key chain. I bought a bunch of this stuff in bulk and have 5 sets left.
A set like this will be shipped to the first 5 people who donate $15.00 or more. I didn't mention this to Taco as I just came up with the idea but I'd imagine he could look at his pay pal records and figure out who the first 5 omaners were who got their money in after 12:30pm mountain time on Wed.

This may be awhile away since it's not football season, but the fund raiser at the OSU Buckeyes message board I go to are selling Buckeyeplanet.com T-shirts to raise money for the site.
OSU has their spring game this saturday and everyone who is going to down for it will be metting and tailgating and buying up the t-shirts that will go to the website.
Just a thought, football season is awhile away, but maybe we could get an orangemane.com store and sell actual orangemane.com shirts and such to buy over the internet.

For example, here are the shirts from buckeyeplanet.com:

http://img53.exs.cx/img53/7331/tshirt22oj.jpg
Somethign as simple as just the orangemane logo with orangemane.com on the back or on the sleeves for long sleeved shirts would work. We have a lot of good photshoppers and designers here so we can get creative by holding contests and taking a vote on the best one, make it fun and get the community involved here.

Man those are some ugly shirts!!! ;)
Meck77

Say those are pretty slick. That's pretty cool you can customize the shirts with your handle on them. That would make it alot easier for people to identify one another at tailgates that's for sure. Can't tell you how many times someone would say to me...Hey is so and so around. Then I'd say yeah they are right over there or.....Um well I think they are around but not sure etc.
Personally I think hats would be cool. That way no matter what the weather is you can always wear your hat. The shirts are nice also but you can't wear your shirt proudly while the weather is 30 degrees out at a football game or whever you are. Just a thought. Both would be the best scenario.

Actually, the money I'm using right now to move us to the new server, I had earmarked for nice embroidered hats... But I hadn't found the right deal. I'm looking for a very specific quality of hat that can be embroidered. If we're going to have this kind of thing out there, I want it to be first class all the way...

Something that is cheap to make and kind of cool are beer cooley type things. Every year me and my friends have a big party and we pass them out. You can sell a ton of them because they are pretty cheap and put whatever you want on them wether it be for an event or just Orange Mane logo type stuff. And who doesn't need to keep their beer cold? I am trying to find the website ive worked with in the past.
