View Full Version : 2006 Draft: A Look Ahead
I'm sure after the trade everyone now wants to know who'll be there in '06. So just to help maintain order, figured we could have one thread to contain it all.
The two most notable '06 draftee posabilities both come from USC, Matt Leinart, who'll be a senior and therefore will definately be in the draft, and Reggie Bush, who's going into his junior season and will be eligable for the draft for his first time in '06. They finished 1st and 4th respectively in Heisman voting last year.
Its also a widely held belief among most scouts that the '06 draft will be significantly better than the '05 draft, maybe one of the better classes in recent history.

Here's a list of some of the guys available next year and Scott Wright's ranking of them. Mind you this doesn't include underclassmen who will declare.
http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/rankings/future/06.html
Rodrique Wright, Mathias Kiwanuka & Orien Harris are all D-linemen in next years class. Wright & Kiwanuka would have been top 10 picks in this years draft.
There's also a nice pair of left tackles next year, D'Brickashaw Ferguson and Eric Winston.
I love the idea of 2 1st rounders next year, especially when the Skins pick will almost certainly be a top 10-15.

the best would be if we had the #1 and the #32 overall picks. we'd be the super bowl champs, and we could get anyone we wanted. we'll actually have a high pick next year. it's been so long since we had a top ten pick. my mouth is watering already.

HELL NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this man should be inducted to canton. i know it's early, but we could get a frachise player next year, and even one this year. 0-16 for the skins, i pray. we can actually help our own draft picks twice by slaughtering them in week 5.
Anyone think Shanahan's going to be leaving Denver any time soon? I think he'd sooner loose to the Raiders, and we all know how much he hates that. He's a man who's always loved to pick and develope his own young talent.
I really think we're in position to build a future champion here. This draft, with 4 picks between the late 2nd and end of the 3rd, will give us a handful of guys who can be vital role players. Next year we'll go looking for that franchise guy or guys who'll take us to that next level. Between these two drafts we'll have 10 picks (not counting next year's compensation, which could be as good as this years) in the first four rounds.

Short of a move like the one they pulled off today, this was my last year on the Shanny bandwagon. He finally showed the ability to look at more than just the upcoming season. This was a fantastic move by Denver.

i think that our comp picks will be just as good, if not better than this years. heyward and Herndon and kennedy will start, and i think that heyward will be as good as berry this year. our team is looking beter and better.

ohh ohhh guys MARIO WILLIAMS aka SUPER FREAK
This move is a steal... I wish I knew the depth of this upcoming draft though. Needless to say, we are in a prime position to do some damage.
These two picks aren't the end of what we will receive either.
I imagine we have two compensatory picks coming our way from Hayward and Kennedy both were 2nd and 3rd round pickups for us. I imagine if we get a 3rd each for Gold and Berry, we should easily get two thirds for those two. No doubt Kennedy will be starting the whole year and Hayward really has a good chance to get double digit sacks on that line.
So far...
2 first round picks...
1 second round pick...
*3 third round picks?
2 fourth round picks...
1 fifth, sixth, and seventh round pick.
We will busy next year. A lot of ability to move up and down in the draft and get quality football players.
More extensive listing for prospects next April 06'
QB: Leinart, Brian Brohm, Chris Leak, Bruce Gradkowski, Jared Zombransky, Charlie Whitehurst, with the possibility of Brent Schaefer also being available. I think this is going to be a very good class of QB's coming out.
I'd post more but i'm tired. Here's the link... ;)

Holy smokes, I forgot all about our possible comp picks.
If Hayward & Kennedy play well enough we could be looking at an extra 3rd & 4th rounder next year as well.
Add that to the cap space we should have (if Herc's calculations are correct) and we can really load up.

Depends. Do you want Courtney Brown and Ian Gold to suck? Because if they play well (as you all hope they will) it'll pretty much cancel Heyward and Kennedy out.

Brown and Gold's performance is irrelevant so far as the calculation of 2006 compensatories go. They are not true free agents within the definition of the rule because they were both cut last year, they were not actual FAs. This is why John Lynch for example was not even factored into the compensatory +/- analysis last year. Brown and Gold dont count. A FA must be a "true" FA not a player signed throughout the year in question but cut before the year begins.

I went to the spring game a couple weeks ago. He passed the ball very well.. However, it is a lot different when you have guys actually coming at you. The guy has a cannon for an arm but his decision making is usually really bad. He is an athletic freak of nature. He had a TD reception this year that was definately mossesque.
I think he might end up staying 2 more years. Most players here at UT do.
I'm from Texas and I've been watching Vince & Reggie McNeal since they were in HS.. And I'd much rather have Reggie.

The one big drawback to this trade that I see is that we will be less active in free agency next year since we will have to be concerned about getting two 1st rounders signed and stay under the salary cap. Anyone know our cap situation next year? I still like the trade, especially if the Redskins suck this year.
Anyone know our cap situation next year? Its hard to tell with all the restructuring at this point, since the cap breakdown on quite a few contracts are unknown now. Its a whole year off though, and we don't have too many big contracts left on the books after this season (Wilson, Bailey, Plummer, and Pryce), so it shouldn't be too bad.
prediction: this thread will survive 2 years of bull$hit to finally be deemed 'true material'. Um, dude, the '06 draft is just a few days over a year away. Not two years, and hell yeah, lets keep this puppy rolling throughout the whole '05 season. It'll be where we can make any comments about NCAA player prospects. :)

I like the fact that this trade and these two first round picks in 06' are somewhat the equivelent already of a young backup QB waiting in the wings incase Plummer doesn't show up and play well in 05 which might I add I think he will. Lets face it Denver doesn't have anyone on it's roster at this moment who poses any type of challenge as far as taking Jakes job and those two picks IMO possibly force Jake to do the extra it takes to become an elite QB. So now he must consider that if he stumbles Denver has the ammo to select his future replacement in next years draft.
Here is a solid preview. No links on the names though and they don't even have Leak or Vincent listed... :(

even if by some miracle the foreskins win 10 and make the playoffs, we should have a better board and about the same position as the 25 we gave up, plus the extra pick.

yeah seriously. The redskins would have to win their division or win two playoffs games as a wild card entry to have a draft position worse than 25. I just don't see that happening.

I love this trade... having said that the NFC is soooo piss poor pathetic anyone could easily make a playoff run. Heres to hoping for a complete implosion!
What happens around here if we end up with the worst case senario in terms of draft order? the 31st and 32nd pick? If thats the case we at least got to the super bowl, if not won it (if by some miracle we play the foreskins in the super bowl I'm pretty sure we'd win). I don't think anyone would complain about that and having two first rounders in a much better draft than this year in terms of overall talent.
Word out of ESPN is that Joe Gibbs was in Mobile, AL yesterday interviewing Jason Campbell... shortly there after they traded up to Denver's 25th spot. Looks like they may be looking for another QB which is great for us. We need them to waste as many bullets as they can. That will bring them closer to a bad record next year.

Leak's 6' 195, and I'm sure that's over inflated just like every other player's measurements.
Hmmm... maybe. But what is Michael Vick's and Drew Brees measurables again? They looked pretty effective last year.
Chris Leak is going to be great in this league. And I hope he will be great for Denver.
Hercules Rockefeller
04-20-2005, 11:50 AM
Vick is still all sizzle and no steak in the passing game, and Brees has had one season out of four.
Leak's nice, but I hope they go for someone a little bigger.
Size isn't a huge deal for me... if a guy can play, he can play. He is going to be a Peyton'Esqe type of player. I think we are going to see him do some amazing things this season under Meyer.
BTW, he threw for 230 yds and 4 tds in the Spring game. Nice start to the season. Still early but I think this guy is going to be great. The only problem is, he is such a heady guy, he might come out until his senior year. I'm hoping he comes out next season so we get a chance to take him.
