View Full Version : Damn Weeds

My front and back yard are being taken over by weeds (dandelines, and some crawling thing) and crab grass. I've tried some of the stuff at Home Depot and Ace and this stuff just seems to laugh at it and keep on coming. I'm getting sick and tired of having to mow my yard 2-3 times a week because the damn weeds keep getting so tall.
Any suggestions?

???
I don't give a damn about any bunnies in my area. Hell they shouldn't be worried about getting sprayed for weeds they should be worried about getting sprayed with shotgun pellets and becoming my dinner.

It's an option that is climbing the charts. The only problem is I'm a bit of a pyromaniac and my wife doesn't trust me starting a fire in the fireplace let alone the lawn.
Something about being a former firefighter. I smell fire and I start thinking money.

Use roundup you fool. Kill Kill Kill. You have to wait awhile to seed or sod tho. Roundup will kill weeds no problem.

I'm having the same problem in my garden...but I need something that kills grass and not the flowers! Roundup kills everything!

You're pretty much screwed as far as the crabgrass, you have to put one of those pre emergent products down very early in the spring to prevent crabgrass.
Roundup makes a product that will kill everything or one that will selectively kill the weeds but not the grass, the crabgrass will also remain unharmed.
Buy the concentrated stuff and the little plastic sprayer/tank if you're talking a fairly large area.

There is also an extended life roundup.
You can plant after roundup, but I think it's 3 weeks time, and that's about how long the growing season is for Sassy up in N.D. anyway.

Yeah, and if you put the crabgrass preventer down, you can't plant new seed.
Planting new seed is an option. Theoretically, if you plant enough seed you can choke out the weeds...or kill them with a turf builder/weed killer.

Why don't you scrape up everything, treat the soil and lay fresh sod? It will be a lot more work, but you'll be starting fresh.

it's oklahoma rascal, there is nothing you can do except spray...spray...spray...spray...spray...then in the fall put down some pre-emergent
I'll trade you your weed problem for my ant problem?

Florida was horrible. Not only was it unGODLY hot and humid in the summer, but if you ever let your pet outside, they had these damn sand fleas that must of escaped from a nuclear test site. On top of that, the damn fire ants were everywhere to boot, and the poison to kill those things smelled worse than week old roadkill. I never have smelled anything so rank as that fireant poison.
Florida is also full of an odd collection of jerks, renecks, illegal immigrants, criminals and arrogant snowbirds from New York. Man, Florida is so overrated. The water smelled like Nutria piss, there are no really fresh clean lakes, the gators and snakes rule the swamps, and on the panhandle, sharks roam the breakers. Nothing can be truer than the saying "Nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there"...unless maybe Vegas. Hell, Vegas was nicer actually.

I sprayed for ants, roches, and everything else that crawls (to bad I couldn't include the fat ass cats) on Monday.
I swear those damn cats are getting fatter every day. All they do is sleep, eat, and ****. Not to mention the occasional puking all over the carpet. Who in the hell wants these things as pets???
So from what i've heard i'm pretty much screwed on the crab grass. And what I need to do is spray for weeds and then spread some turf builder. Correct?

I guess the real thing that pissed me off was when some weed treatment company put one of their yard signs on my yard yesterday. I called their asses and said if I so much as see one of their employees step a foot onto my property again I'm suing their asses off. I asked who their biggest rival was and once they told me I told them I was contacting them and telling them to put a sign in my lawn and I was going to hire them.

You haven't lived here for awhile. Take it from me, nothing has changed for the better.

Just to horn in on Rascal's thread....since this is lawn care stuff, anyone know how to get rid of slugs? The little bastards mow down my flowers at mach 3 when I get them planted. They seem to especially love orange marigolds. I can plant them and a week later, there will be nothing but sticks sticking out of the ground.

I use this stuff from a local nursery - It is a turf builder and a weed compund. Then i have ortho for taking out grubs.
ortho makes a slug killer too

Get one of those metal pie tins and fill it with beer (a cheap beer, of course). Then put it in the garden pressed down into the soil so the rim is even with the soil level. Leave it over-night. The next morning, you'll find it filled with dead slugs. Happy. But dead.
