Notebook: Broncos Bring Back Pair
By Andrew Mason
DenverBroncos.com

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Bringing in a quartet of Browns didn't represent the extent of the Broncos' free-agent activity on the defensive line.

Friday, the team re-signed defensive tackle Luther Elliss, bringing the 11-season veteran back for 2005 after he endured a first year with the Broncos that saw flashes of brilliance mixed with injuries that kept him out of action for eight of 16 games.

Elliss' season officially ended in December when he was placed on injured reserve due to a herniated disc in his lower back. That was the third injury to befall Elliss last year; he missed four games with a strained calf muscle suffered while running windsprints at the first practice after the bye in November and sat out the season opener with a slight tear of the pectoral muscle.

Up until a frustrating run of injuries the past two years, Elliss had been durable, playing in at least 14 of 16 games every year from 1995-2002. But when he played, he was effective, posting two sacks in a reserve role in 2004.

HAPE RETURNS

Tight end Patrick Hape joined Elliss in re-signing with the Broncos, returning to the team after establishing a career high for touchdown receptions with four last fall.

All of Hape's touchdowns came from 5 yards or less, with the 5-yarder taking place during the Broncos' 16-13 win at Tampa Bay in a game that represented Hape's successful return to the place where he spent the first four seasons of his professional career.

The quartet of touchdowns last year represented half of Hape's entire reception total for the year.

Hape started six games last season -- three at tight end and three more at fullback following Kyle Johnson's season-ending ankle injury. One of Hape's starts at fullback came in the playoff loss at Indianapolis.

Those starts were Hape's first since 2001, when he opened seven games at fullback and another at tight end. The start at tight end that year came on Dec. 16 at Kansas City and was his last start until this past Sept. 19 at Jacksonville.

At this point I wonder who is going to make the final 53 man roster.

all hape does is catch td;s and a red zone threat is very important for the broncos

I don't mind Hape. He's a third sting TE and FB. I wish he'd learn to long snap and fill that black hole of a roster slot too. I wonder if he'll supplant House as the blocking TE this year.

Doesn't Ellis have the same injury as Pryce? If so, doesn't this signal that we think a player with that injury can comeback and play? And if we were to assume that is the thinking, then shouldn't we make a real push to get Pryce to restructure?

Philosophical on a friday...

I'd rather have Ellis Johnson that Luther Ellis.

Well I'd rather have 10 dollars than 1. Ellis Johnson wanted too much $$$$. At this point, our offseason hopes rest on getting the money held hostage by Trevor's contract. The ideal situation to me: trade Trevor and our #1 and move up. I'd like to get Mike Williams in a Broncos Uni!

There's a hell of a difference bro, approx $8.7 million in cap room between both. If Luther re-signed for the minimum as was the case last season then he only counts a paltry $465,000 against the cap and if he doesn't cut the mustard by final cutdown time he's gone for no cap hit. Pryce is a completely different story.

No way Mike falls to picks 15-17 and that's all Trevor's worth in trade value if even that. Plus the fact the DPO now has sources claiming he could be released shortly doesn't do his value much good at all!!

If Pryce shows up to off season workouts things might get complicated.

I like Hape. He is an insurance policy. Maybe Brewster can make the guy a better TE. How does everyone feel he played at FB? Comments?

I'll take a healthy Luther over a healthy Ellis any day of the week

I think a more reallist opption is to trade down out of the 1st round and pick up mutliple picks. Say our 1st and TP for 2 second round picks and a 3rd or 4th round pick.

We might get someone to byte on that and we get rid of the strangle hold TP has on our CAP right niw.

The games that Luther Ellis was healthy, he dominated and made a difference.

What has Hape done to get this kind of bashing? Hes only on the field for a few plays and he either gets a first down or a TD. Its not his fault he doesn't get more playing time then what he does. I would rather have him backing up then someone else that CAN'T catch in the redzone.
