And I took pictures.
Dont have a big memory card so couldnt take very many but Im gonna post them because the ones I kept were good and of cool animals (though I couldnt find the poison arrow frog or whatever...it was bright blue in the manual).
Some sad stories though :( The Gorilla the zoo had died last year and because it is such an endangered animal the zoo is having trouble finding another already captive one to replace her. The jaguar died as well, but that was only two weeks ago. Old age, so thats at least something.
Also, the damn albino tiger wasn't out today. The zookeeper I asked said he was having his monthly checkup today so we didnt get to see him which is too bad because the white tigers are so rare that its always a treat to see them.
Anyway, here are the pics I thought I would share.

This grotesque thing was really quite stunning. The colors on it were remarkable though they do not show up well in the shrunken down version here.

I love zoos. We took our kids to the Denver Zoo when we were there last summer. I thought it was a pretty neat zoo.
They had a monkey there that was going nuts because there was a guy with a dog standing next to us. We were treated to the monkey peeing and pooping all over the glass in front of us. Of course, that's the only thing my kids could talk about.
Nice pics, Alec.

These lazy bastards were in the back of their habitat so the only picture I could take of them was through the plexiglass (which, had you been able to see it, you would have noticed many a scratch mark from them pawing at it).

Hmm, so where's the kid that went with the binky?
Lunch?

I wasnt quick enough on the camera, but he came through those bushes and he had that look of a hunter in his eyes and it would have been such a cool picture.

So have you ever done that Butterfly thing? My aunt had told me there is someplace where you can go in and there are like thousands of butterflies everywhere. I guess you can go in there and they land on you and stuff?

Funny thing about those oragutans. Right when we got there (and, of course, my camera was in my pocket) the smallest one was taking a leak right there where he sat. Then he sticks his hand out to catch his urine and the crowd gathered laughed and he looked at the crowd and then he proceeded to drink his own urine and looked at the crowd again as they all went "eeeewww", then he smiled and threw his head back. The one next to him, seeing all the attention he was getting, pissed straight down onto the big one (not pictured) laying underneath them.
Orangutan's are the coolest of the great apes. Siamang's the coolest of the lesser apes (and the only true brachiators) and emporer tamarins the coolest of the monkeys.

I go once a year too. The zoo is downtown by Rice University and Hermann Memorial Park and the museum district. You have to go there several times a year to see everything because you only got time to do pretty much one, maybe two things when you go.
Houston may not be the greatest city on Earth, but that part of Houston is fantastic.

The last zoo I attended was the San Diego zoo a couple of years ago. Two tortoises were engaging in "extracurricular activities" and a few kids around me thought it was the funniest thing. It was pretty funny, considering how slow it took for the tortoise to mount the other. I guess you just had to be there... :)

That's the Houston zoo, isn't it? I took my son there about two years ago... back before my evil wife decided that we were too happy in Texas and forced us to move...;)
The tigers there are ALWAYS in the freakin' water. Very entertaining.
Almost as soon as I moved to Omaha, I bought a year pass for the zoo here. It's a nice freakin' zoo (blows Houston away, IMO). We live about 15 minutes away (as opposed to the hour or so that we lived away from Houston) so we go all the time now. It's nice when you have a kid to be able to (a) go often and (b) not having to worry about cramming everything in and making a whole day of it because, hell, you can just come back next weekend.

Its kind of funny. When you first get there, everyone there at the gate is in a good mood. And you see those people throughout the day as you traverse the zoo. As the day wears on and the kids get wild, parents get cranky. We had a great time though, the one kid that was with us was well behaved and had his fun at the same time. Nice day too. Ive been to many a fine zoo and all are unique and special so I dont really consider any one to be "better" than another. San Diego was the largest and most comprehensive but to me it didnt seem as inviting as Houston's Zoo or even Oakland's zoo (they have the best primate exhibits Ive ever seen).

Been there a couple of times. They also have a room with bugs and spiders. Kids can hold a creepy crawly. - Okay, so I held the tarantula, too... Be sure to take a camera. Some of the butterflies are just stunning.
In addition to the Denver Zoo a trip to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs isn't bad either.

I've been to the Hermann Park Zoo many times. Used to be free admission but I'm not sure it is anymore. Great place for a cheap date.
The last time I went was with an uncle and aunt (around 20 years ago). They had just finished an indoor large monkey exhibit. The monkeys inside were loud and boisterous, apparently drawing boundaries for themselves within the new territory. As we left my uncle remarked, "Now that was worth the price of admission."
Been to the Denver Zoo and the St. Louis Zoo more recently as well as smaller private zoos in Austin and Gulf Shores, AL (remember the escaped alligator after Hurricane Ivan? That's the zoo that got leveled). Zoos are always more fun when you have children along.
