View Full Version : Ferguson @ Strong Safety?
Jeff Legwold, of the Rocky Mountain News, reports Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan said S Nick Ferguson is projected as the team's starting strong safety after former S Kenoy Kennedy (Lions) departed via free agency.

Ok I just can't figure this. Why have a younger/faster player @ Strong side and an older/slower player @ free safety?
To me this is just dumb.........

i think legwold has it mixed up heav. Kenoy played FS last year even though he is a natural SS, and Fergy will replace him at FS.

Safety is still a missing part of the puzzle.

I think we'll draft a Safety with a 3rd round pick, maybe a 2nd
DL, S, G definitely the biggest needs in this draft. I think we'll take three of those with our top three picks. Our 2nd 3rd round pick is going to be Jackson from UNC.

Jackson will not last till the 101st pick.
Well... pick him higher... :) I don't know, I'd be happy with Jackson in the 2nd round. We have other needs but wouldn't mind bringing in somebody to challenge Watts. I think our offense is going to be just sick next year. Simply sick. As long as Jake doesn't get hurt, we are going to see a very efficient group. I would like to add some more depth to the guard position but we did just fine with Cooper in there. Our line tends to run like a smoothly oiled machine no matter who is playing.

actually it was KK that stayed at SS and John Lynch made the move to FS.

I understood that last year. But why not move Lynch back to his former position at SS and have Fergy play his Free safety. Wouldn't it be better to have his ball skills (supposed) at the free spot.
Would you rather see Lynch in coverage with Moss out there or Fergy? I know Lynch can bring the wood. But still wouldn't that be better at SS and near the line of scrimmage?

FS is just a title. Lynch's title was FS but he played in the box alot last year like a SS.
Jackson will not last till the 101st pick. I don't know, he hasn't gotten a whole lot of press and before the combine he was a question to even be drafted. Most scouts think his impressive combine was needed to move him into the 3rd or 4th round, but that with his sporadic performance against Div. II competition he'll have no chance of making the first two rounds.
He could very well go before us in the 3rd though. We'll see, I get the gut feeling that Shanahan likes this kid and will take him in the 2nd if he gets the least bit ansy that someone is going to beat him to it. Just like he did with Watts.

Traditionally the FS responsibility is pass coverage while the SS would come up in run support. What Denver had was two traditional SS and no true FS. Kennedy was SS and Lynch was FS. Ferguson is a better option at FS than Lynch or Kennedy.
A lot of teams have converted CBs who can cover and hit into FS. The Patriots converted Eugene Wilson from CB to FS. The Ravens converted Rod Woodson from CB to FS. I believe the Rams converted Aeneas Williams from CB to FS. Dwight Smith was a ballhawk as a FS in Tampa Bay.
I just worry about Lynch in coverage. I still can see the Colts wideouts running past him.

Honestly, in todays pass happy NFL i think the free saftey should just be replaced with the nickle back... but from what i can see of our defensive schemes we flip them between coverage and run support almost 50/50

Also Corey Chavious, Troy Vincent, Ray Buchanan, and the most known CB to FS move Ronnie Lott.
FS as always been more of a coverage safety with ball skills.

They'll run past Fergy as well.
By game three, all the blown coverages will be Fergy's fault for not providing safety help........just wait and see.

The bottom line is that they need to get the right person at FS (the coverage safety position). Fergy isn't the greatest for it but he is better than Lynch or KK at FS and he is the best option at this point in time for the FS position unless one of the CBs get converted over (Walls, Leseur). No disrespect to anyone's boy. KK and Lynch are very good SS not FS.
As Coyer stated today, LeSeur was drafted to be a cover safety.
