I disagree with you. I found it to be excruciatingly slow and emminently predictable. It pissed me off, too, because I was SOOOO looking forward to that movie.

As for my list of bests, there's Outlaw Josey Wales and then there's everything else... EDIT: - Oh, and Tombstone, which is one of my top 5 movies of all time.

;D Free Grazing is a concept alot of people didnt understand , I like the realism of the whole thing , the Gunfight was awesome , when Costner does that rapid fire shooting 9 times , with 1 pistol , is so cool and if you look at the firearm close , when they show it , it is a Pattison ( Robert Duvall makes reference to it , when he says light weapon ) ......

Sacriledge! How dare not a single person mention the dawn of the spagetti western era and one of the most enjoyable pieces of work in cinema..

Il Buono, il brutto, il cattivo (http://imdb.com/title/tt0060196/combined)

The sergio leone soundtrack alone was fantastic and a great addition! And if we are bringing up classic westerns, the Magnificent Seven was alot of fun too! I know it was a remake of the Seven Samurai but it was a great flick!

one of the ironies is that the Unforgiven is the title of TWO different westerns. My all time fav is the first, 1960's with burt lancaster, audrye hepburn, lilian gish (silent screen diva) and audey murphey in his absolute best, and I believe last role, just as he exocised his wartime demons, to the extent he could do so, and really acted. Charles Bikford too. John Saxon was the "indian." LOL

http://www.wildestwesterns.com/the_unforgiven.htm

I also liked jerimiah johnson, though that's maybe not a western. Charleton Hestons mountain man movie is good too, though not really accurate in some ways.

Spider,

Lonesome Dove is also my fave. Perfectly cast starting with Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones. I was holding out hope that a few years ago they would make the book Commanche Moon into a movie with Jones and Duvall reprising their roles. It would've been a stretch having them play guys in their mid-30's for sure but, hey, life on the trail made a man age fast. :D

Duvall is a great cowboy as is Costner and that's one of the reason's I enjoyed Open Range so much. That and it's relative accuracy in portraying the period.

Lotsa folks like Tombstone, and I do too, but if you want historical accuracy then you need to watch Wyatt Earp. "Blood is all that matters. Everyone else is a stranger.". Tombstone is the "Hollywood-ized" version of the Earp story.

The Searchers is a great Wayne flick IMHOP, and Unforgiven is Eastwood's best.

The spaghetti westerns are all good fun. I watched "Two Mules for Sister Sarah" on AMC last night. I put that in the spag. western classification.

Back to Duvall and Wayne:
Gus McRae is one of the great western characters. Along with Rooster Cogburn.

I didn't like Wayne as rooster that much. Sure it was his swan song, though I really liked the shootist better.

Wayne's best western character, imo, was in the searchers. she wore a yellow ribbon was nice and sentimentle. Fort Apache was a good role, thouhd shanny's starting to remind me of Henry fonda in that one.

Speaking of FOnda,

welcome to hardtimes was definetey a neat twist, based on a doctorow novel

cheyenne social club, very funny

James Stewart
my fav, winchester 73, but hell the rifle is the star
they rode together with him and richard widmark
as an adult, the naked spur is pretty cool

funny thing about Stewart was the studio wouldn't let him do action, and left him in light comedy, until he flew B-17s over Germany. His career got better after they found he had real cajones.

nobody mentioned the magnificent 7, did they?

I dunno. I think duvall's acting was one of the best.

Gegory Peck, the stalking moon

the bravados has maybe the best alltime revenge plot

the gunfighter

duel in the sun is .... I'm not sure what that was.

aside from stalking moon, which is pretty scary and almost like a suspense film, Peck's roles were highly psychological. So, he's sort of a category of his own. IMO, the best hollywood actor of the post WWII-70's years.

Classic Clint and one of my favorites...however seeing the Skipper from Gilligan's Island always bothered me in that one.

I disagree. I think Kurt Russell did a great job. Sam Elliot was awesome as usual. Powers Boothe was great and Val Kilmer was oscar worthy.

I have a degree in history and the real Wyat Earp was no where near the way he was portrayed. Most of his fame came from the dime store novels that were made of him BUT still I think Tombstone was just great. If you want realism watch Jerimiah Johnson.

Agreed Wyatt and Doc Holiday had a good scam going ...... But on a different note , is that the Picture of J. Earp ?
a little history on the photo , in was copy writted in 1914 , by ABC Novelty company , but in a recent letter I read from them ( posted by a poster on a different BB ) Stated , that they bought the Picture in 1914 , and used it with several other nude women to put on playing cards , the ABC novelty company has no Idea where the picture came from or who was the photoghper was ..... But someone bought some sheet music from a bar in tombstone , and found a picture just like it labeled "Kaloma" and from what I understand , that was the name of a showgirl ..Wasnt Josie a showgirl before she met Wyatt ?

Loved the gunfight in Open Range.

Trivia point: Who was the fastest draw in Hollywood?

Answer: Comedian Jerry Lewis once finished as runner up in the national fast-draw competition. (back in the late 60s)

I loved most of the movies mentioned above.

Back in the late 50's & early 60's Westerns absolutely dominated TV. I think there was one year when 14 of the 20 highest rated shows were all westerns.

Sometimes on long trips, I'll play a tape (or CD) of those old western themes to make the drive go faster. Best themes: Magnificent Seven, Hang 'em High, the Virginian, Gunsmoke, Maverick.

Oh yeah, and Paladin.

That absolutely rocked.

Paladin

I do have to introject a couple of comments here. While I agree that most of the movies mentioned here were pretty good, even great in some instances, I have to put in a plug for some real classics. There were three movies that really brought the Western genre to the forefront: Stagecoach, Shane, and High Noon.

Stagecoach was made in 1937, I believe, and was the movie that brought John Wayne out of the "B" category and into the "star" category of entertainers. It was his work in the WWII movies - Iwo Jima among others - that endeared him to the action-adventure crowd, but Stagecoach started it for him, and is considered to be one of the all time classic westerns.

Shane was the consumate western character study. Who will ever forget the fight scene which, at the time, was dubbed as the best bar room fight scene ever filmed. And, "Shane. Come Back Shane. My mother loves you." That movie had all the emotions of an adult western that made the genre appealing and meaningful on many levels. The darker, brooding gunfighter who had seen it all, running smack dab against the innocence of the hopes for better things, things and relationships of value..... Watching that dog chasing after that kid was stirring..... Brandon DeWilde was killed in an automobile accident in Denver on I-25, I forget the year, but it was a very sad day for many people who had that movie in mind. Ladd and Jean Auther gave the performances of their lives.

High Noon brought Cooper back from a sagging career. Grace Kelly's first movie was an absolute stunner. That movie was shot in 28 days. Cooper had a bleeding ulcer and that was credited to helping him maintain that stoic composure during the shooting of the movie. The song was simple and haunting. That was probably Tex Ritter's only real hit, although I can remember his version of "Rye Whiskey" and a couple of others. When he sang that song at the academy awards, it just brought the goosebumps back remembering the tension, the slow, plodding, meaningful build up, etc. That movie's time line matched real time. Again, it was a winner because it had all the other emotions that made the "American Frontier" - real or imagined - so appealing to the public, including the Europeans. Lee Van Cleef became a prototypical "bad guy" in that movie. I never liked Thomas Mitchell again after that movie.

IMHO, those three movies "made" the Western Movie.

I participate in SAS (Single Action Shooters) There is a certain rush shooting black powder. I do some re-enacting. I like to cowboy up. It is basically a bunch of grown men playing with pop guns whooping and hollering.

I've been in a Wild West show, marched and rode in military formation, lead a skirmish line, and even participated in a mock battle or two. I've done it so long that I've actually turned down a couple of TNT movies. It seems everyone is a movie star if you ride long enough. I was in a PBS special where I ended up getting interviewed after on performance and it comes on every year. I can always tell when it's getting aired. I think it's funny how wide people eyes get when they see it's you. It's like they never knew you.

If any of you guys want to test your riding skills the Crow reservation has something every year. Those guys ride like they have nothing to lose. If you see Custer Memorial battlefield it's very chilling effect imagining what those guys were going through.

I collect old west guns. I like the gun rig that Clint Eastwood used in Pale Rider and want to get that custom made. I like the "Quigley Down Under" .45-120. I haven't brought myself to buying that. I'll stick with the standard .45-70 as the load is a lot cheaper. I have a .54 breech thats goes boom.

One of these days I'm going to take a trail drive up through Rabbit Ears pass into the Rockies and just ride for a month. It's a great ride if you get the chance. I think that is what heaven would look like.

You cannot begin to imagine how much I miss being a cowboy.

Jeremiah Johnson is the best mountain man movie ever made. That is one of my favorite movies of all time.
Tom Selleck is the real deal. He doesn't get recognized like he should.
Dustin Hoffman was fun to watch in Little Big Man (Inaccurate)
Val Kilmer was hilarious in Tombstone (More inaccuracies)
Unforgiven proved Westerns can remain it's own genre.
Silverado proved Westerns will never die.

I like Open Range a lot because it told a story. I enjoyed the "slow" parts because that is what cowboying is mostly. It's enjoying the things around you and not being worried about time passing. The openess of the scenes was refreshing and in the end it was a good story.

Gunsmoke and all the black and white stuff remains the good stuff.
I loved Paladin.

John Wayne's Red River was great stuff.

Henry Fonda played a great cowboy. I always liked Glen Ford too.

I think Clint Eastwood has done more for Westerns than anyone living or dead.

I think the horse whisperer is full of crap but he makes a valid point.

Besides in Colorado if a horse is that messed up I can always call Charlie Brown to break him.

I also thought that Jimmy Stewart had a number of interesting roles and stories. Broken Arrow was a movie that over-idealized Cochise, but it was a good yarn. I think "Bend of the River" was a foo flick. And I think that Sam Elliot tried to show what LaMoure's characters were about.

Lord, there have been so many movies with the Western motiff that shaped the entertainment field over a number of years. Even Star Wars had the same basic plot/story line/charateristics of a western, ans had been called a Space Opera based on the Horse Opera. But when I am getting over a cold, and sitting in my lounge, I watch an old western- probably for the umteenth time - and I feel better.

I thought Wayne's stagecoach character was one dimensonal. I much prefered him in the Searchers. And in both the stagecoaches, they killed more native americans than I thought existed.

I just never liked Cooper.

Shane is the one western I can think of where the movie and the book are both top notch.

Wow, no one's mentioned any Sam Peckinpah movies. The Wild Bunch. Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Garcia (Warren Oates is a revelation in this movie). Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. Peckinpah was probably the best director of all-time when it came to delving into the true nature of violence.
