A South Dakota couple makes and markets candles they say smell like Jesus.
You can find candles with just about every fragrance imaginable, from blueberry to ocean mist to hot apple pie.

Now there's a candle that lets you experience the scent of Jesus, and they've been selling out by the case.

"We see it as a ministry, " says Bob Tosterud, who together with his wife came up with the idea for the candle.

Light up the candle called "His Essence" and its makers say you'll experience the fragrance of Christ.

Bob Tosterud and wife Karen say the formula is all spelled out in Psalm 45.

"It's a Messianic Psalm referring to when Christ returns and his garments will have the scent of myrrh, aloe and cassia," says Karen Tosterud.

Wondering what that must smell like, Karen Tosterud ordered those oils, a combination that produces sort of a flowery, cinnamon aroma. Then she called on a friend who just happened to be a candle-maker.

"And in October, we got our first batch of 768 candles. We had no idea how it would go," Karen Tosterud says.

But once word got out they went through 10,000 candles.

"It's the only one on the market and everyone tells us it's very unique and nothing like it," says Karen Tosterud.

"We wanted people to be able to experience Christ in new ways and to be able to read a bible and have that scent and that candle as a reminder that he is with us all the time."

"You can't see him and you can't touch him," says Bob Tosterud. "This is a situation where you may be able to sense him by smelling. And it provides a really new dimension to one's experience with Jesus."

The candles never stay on the shelves for long. The Tosteruds say each one that goes out is like a ministry in itself.

The candles sell for about $18. They are sold in about 150 stores around the country. Or you can order them online at www.hisessence.com.

You'll start shopping at WalMart, watching NASCAR, and feeling a strange urge to donate to Tom DeLay's legal defense fund. ;)

I could have sworn there were a lot more than 10,000 religious hypocrites out there. Oh well, give it time, I suppose.

for $18 a candle it is a ministry in a candle.

For $18 a candle it's highway robbery, exploitation, and sin.

Well, if some right-wing radio DJ can raise $5 million to buy Terri Schiavo, then these nutjobs selling Jesus-scented candles shouldn't surprise anyone, I suppose.

So is it free will, or is it praying and having God do favors for you in "times of need"...I'm trying to figure this all out here, because God seems to have a codescending slap-happy way of sorting his blessing out here.

I'm beginning to think that whole "religious gene" is true. It's got to be. It only takes about 5 minutes of study time on the internet or in a public library to see the sham, stolen and spinful lies and deciet of organized religion. No, seriously! The purpose of Organized Religion is to surpress information, because when the facts come out, the cult is debunked. But then again, these people never relied on facts anyhow so what am I talking about.

I must say though, wiggling on the ground for a woman you've never met to forefill your political and "moral" gains is truely admirable.

(P.S.: That one chick next to the "preach" is kinda hot and has a good tan goin on too. I wouldn't mind seein' her in 6 inch platform heels and low-cut "boyshorts".)

Evidence that you are correct on all counts:

Milking a new cash cow: Conservatives invoke Schiavo in fund-raising campaigns

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/03/25/politics/25fund.html

Videotape of Terri Schiavo blinking at her parents has inspired donations from people around the country to the foundation set up to help pay for the family's legal battle. But many other groups are soliciting donations in her name as well, some for a much broader agenda.

"Help Save Terri Schiavo's Life!" says the Web site of the Traditional Values Coalition, a Christian conservative group best known for its campaigns against gay rights. Next to a link to the Web site of her parents' foundation is a pitch to "become an active supporter of the Traditional Values Coalition by pledging a monthly gift."

"What this issue has done is it has galvanized people the way nothing could have done in an off-election year," said Rev. Lou Sheldon, the founder of the group, acknowledging that the case of Ms. Schiavo, a severely brain-damaged Florida woman, had moved many to open up their checkbooks. "That is what I see as the blessing that dear Terri's life is offering to the conservative Christian movement in America."

Isn't this amusing.

You take candles and turn them into the Shiavo situation.

I will give you a few facts you dimwits.

These candles don't use middle east oil at all, they are make from Soy Oil. I have an interest in the company not 5 miles from me, that is expanding it's candle making industry.

Honestly, I think that they would make black satan candles made of arsenic if you really emailed them and requested some. Might fit your style.

Again, your totally clueless, and take a post into the absurd. Now your attacking a company that makes Holy Candles? You are, right? Then you bring in religious zealotry like it's the norm. The fact is, your not the "norm" either.
