Since there seems to be an overwhelming amount of speculation and rumors running all over the league and the board about some of the big name free agents, I thought we could create a thread to sort through some of the many rumors and signings that are now taking place across the league.

Jaguars sign DE Hayward
March 2, 2005

JACKSONVILLE, Florida (Ticker) - The Jacksonville Jaguars addressed a pressing need Wednesday, signing free agent defensive end Reggie Hayward.

Terms were not disclosed, but the team will hold a news conference Thursday morning to introduce its new pass rusher.

Hayward, 25, led Denver with 10 1/2 sacks last season, when he started 15 games - including the Broncos' AFC wild card loss at Indianapolis. He recorded 60 tackles, one interception and one fumble recovery while forcing one fumble.

A third-round pick in 2001 out of Iowa State, Hayward also had one sack and two tackles in the postseason loss to the Colts.

In 47 career games with the Broncos, Hayward registered 22 sacks and 75 tackles.

Last season, the Jaguars were led in sacks by defensive end Greg Favors and defensive tackle John Henderson, who recorded 5 1/2 apiece.

Jacksonville also signed defensive tackle Martin Chase, a seven-year veteran who missed the entire 2004 season with the New York Giants due to a knee injury. Chase appeared in 13 games with Washington in 2003, recording 12 tackles.

Plan was to be big tackle Willimams or Payne , then Havon and or Burgess, DeLoachfor DE and eat OG Andruzzi or Wahle (if released) which he was!

Seems like Warren fell out of the sky (cheaper)

Now they did plan to go with soem cheaper guys such as K Clancy, Bobby Hamilton, Okeafor or Vander Bosh and Marcus Bell. But that was if they lost Pope,Ellis, or Davis!

Gold wasn't in the plans. They thought they had Kennedy wrapped. Garcia wasn't in the original plan. They tried for Frank but got "Sticker shock"

There is no way Pat Williams gave them sticker shock with the deal he signed with the Vikes.

I think Shanny (again) has not caught on that teams are identifying who they want, and making it happen on Day 1. Players are no longer making multiple visits before deciding, teams get them to town and are not letting them leave.

The Broncos are pretty tight against the cap, so its not like they're going to be ultra aggressive in FA.

With the switch to a 3-4 defense, the Broncos need a big fat plug in the middle, and they have that with Warren. The Broncos are super deep at LB. The Broncos secondary is in good condition too.

The Broncos need to bring in another DE for the defense, and that might come in the draft. Also, the Broncos will probable draft another olineman in the second round.

If Shanny is truly set with Plummer, than he just needs a few tweeks. I personally don't think that Shanahan is right in his analysis of this team, but I guess that is why he is the HC/VP and I'm just a fan...

I don't understand you folks. I really don't.

It takes time to put together the moves the Broncos want to make.

Rolle, Surtain, people like that are pipe dreams...Denver doesn't have the money to pay those people. They probably came in because they'd heard Denver was a great place to play & wanted to see what was available.

Shanahan & Sundquist, along with others have been planning this off-season since last summer with a pretty good idea of what was going to transpire.

People forget, apparently, that there is another FA date...June 1, when still more players will become available.

I admit things look rather unsettled at the moment, but it's early...and I mean REALLY early.

I can't see any blockbuster moves coming to pass like last year & maybe that's what fans want, but Bailey/Portis deals are rare.

Denver will NOT short change it's D-Line. Quite the contrary, it will be the emphasis this off-season...key word there...off-season...it's only the beginning.

I can't remember a more impatient fan base...sheesh

Well wabbit,

Seeing other teams locking up players that we wanted is frustrating. You would think they would call some players in and talk to them, but not a word. You think they would be a little more active, but it's something we can expect. It happened last year after the Portis/Bailey Trade.. Shanahan and Co. sat around and twiddled their thumbs

...Seeing other teams locking up players that we wanted is frustrating. You would think they would call some players in and talk to them, but not a word. You think they would be a little more active...

You don't know what they're doing...there's a lot of back room stuff that goes on this time of year you don't hear about until it happens.

I know that 8 or 9 teams wanted to talk to Hayward, yet the Jagwads locked him up in a day...how? He might've squeezed out a few more millions.

Agents & Agent Agencies have relationships with teams & coaches & management & ownership...some good, some not so good.

With a wink & a nod teams get a heads up on who's going to be out there & what it 'might' take to get him on your team...and screw the tampering rules. That's been something of a joke for a decade.

There's a hell of a lot more going on out there than you'll ever read, and a whole lot happens long before the starting gate is opened.

Broncos see Gold as silver lining?

Ex-Denver linebacker, Okeafor on their radar

By Lee Rasizer And Jeff Legwold, Rocky Mountain News
March 3, 2005

There was no immediate charge into free agency for the Denver Broncos on Wednesday, but they are working on a rusher to replace their 2004 sacks leader.

Chike Okeafor, arguably the top defensive end still available, will visit the team today. The Broncos also have all but finished an agreement with linebacker Ian Gold, a standout with the Broncos from 2000 to 2003 on special teams and defense before leaving in free agency last off-season.

Reached Wednesday night, Gold, who spent much of the day at the Broncos' Dove Valley complex, refused to confirm his Denver visit, much less his contract status.

"I have not signed on the dotted line with any team," he said.

But earlier, Gold, released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a salary-cap move Tuesday, maintained that he had offers from at least four teams and expected a quick resolution.

His only caveat was that he wants to play weak-side linebacker (away from an offense's tight end) not the strong side, where he toiled last season with the Buccaneers.

Denver has one of the league's up-and-coming stars on the weak side in D.J. Williams, so it is unclear how Gold would fit into the Broncos' scheme.

Free agency formally opened at 12:01 a.m. EST on Wednesday as the frenzy began leaguewide to secure the biggest names available.

But Broncos general manager Ted Sundquist, with only moderate salary-cap room, had promised a more reasoned, patient approach than some of his peers and Denver followed through as it sought to fill specific needs.

The biggest of those needs is replacing defensive end Reggie Hayward, who agreed to a five-year, $25 million contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars that included a $10 million signing bonus.

Okeafor, 28, could be a lower-cost alternative, but he is being pursued by the Arizona Cardinals, Kansas City Chiefs and his former team, the Seattle Seahawks. All of those teams have far more flexibility against the salary cap than the Broncos.

Okeafor led the Seahawks in sacks in each of the past two seasons with eight and 81/2.

It is the second time the Broncos seriously have pursued Okeafor. He visited Denver during the 2003 off-season but was snapped up by the Seahawks with a two-year $4 million deal.

Scouts consider the 265-pound Okeafor a high-effort player.

"It looks like Chike is pretty much their target," Okeafor's agent, Andy Simms, said. "We'll see how things play out. The trip's planned for a reason."

Hayward's deal likely has set the market for top free-agent defensive ends. He leaves Denver having played in 47 games with 75 tackles, 22 assists, 22 sacks, seven passes defensed and one interception.

He led the team last season with 101/2 sacks.

"The one thing Jacksonville's been missing is a pass rush, and they had probably identified Reggie as the top pass-rushing defensive end out there since John Abraham (New York Jets) and Darren Howard (New Orleans Saints) were franchised," Hayward's agent, Fletcher Smith, said. "So with that said, I'm not surprised that they felt that he was deserving of the contract comparable to what we were looking for when we set out into free agency."

The Broncos also continue to negotiate with safety Kenoy Kennedy, who is slated to visit the Detroit Lions on Sunday. But the cap-constrained Broncos are not in a position to bid against the Lions, Jets and Miami Dolphins, so early indications are Kennedy has played his last game with Denver.

After making one-year tender offers to their restricted free agents, restructuring eight contracts and cutting guard Dan Neil, the Broncos are about $3.9 million under the $85.5 million salary cap.

But that total does not include Gerard Warren's contract - the defensive tackle's trade to Denver for a fourth-round pick in the draft next month was finalized with paperwork having been filed with the NFL - or the first-year salary of guard Ben Hamilton, who has agreed to terms on a five-year contract that has not yet been filed with the league.

The Broncos also have targeted a potential replacement should they lose Kennedy. Green Bay Packers safety Bhawoh Jue also has drawn interest from the St. Louis Rams and the Broncos, but the fifth-year veteran has received a recommendation from Denver secondary coach Bob Slowik.

Slowik was Jue's position coach for three years with the Packers (2001-03) as well as Green Bay's defensive coordinator last season. Jue, who at 200 pounds played cornerback, free safety and strong safety for the Packers, was a regular on special teams as well.

Also Wednesday:

• Warren spent part of the day at Dove Valley getting acquainted with his new team as well as meeting with coaches. As part of the deal with the Browns, the Broncos will be responsible for dealing with a $1.3 million roster bonus Warren is scheduled to receive today.

• Free-agent guard Rick DeMulling, who filled in at center for the Indianapolis Colts last season, has expressed interest in talking with the Broncos. DeMulling's representative, Ken Staninger, said he contacted the Broncos earlier this week but has not heard back from the team.

"Yes, they are on our radar," Staninger said. "Rick is a Northwest guy and would like to get back in that part of the country if things work out."

DeMulling played at Idaho and is a native of Cheney, Wash. • Broncos running back Santonio Beard, who had been allocated to NFL Europe, failed his physical at the league's training camp at Tampa, Fla., this week. It means the Broncos lose a roster exemption to bring an extra player to their training camp in July because Beard will not play in Europe.

Sign Okeafor and Draft Merriman.

And I'm not for signing Bhawoh Jue, He's a SS. We need a True FS and Move Lynch back to SS.

I still have hope for Ken Lucas for the CB. I dont see Lenny Walls as the starter.

ok guys (for you fans that are getting peeved),

Sundquist has contacted me about playing for Denver. I'm 5'8, weight 165, and can run the 40 in 5-flat: that is 5 hours.

I think I will be a Glynn Milburn type of player: a little bit of everything. I can return kicks, punts, and fetch the Water.

The only way that number is correct is if Denver was over the cap going into this offseason, which flies in the face of every single report from any media source in the past month.

Rasizer's cap reporting was a joke last offseason. He was somehow able to change how much Denver was under the cap on a daily basis without Denver making any actual signings.

Updating an earlier story, Len Pasquarelli, of ESPN.com, reports the Dallas Cowboys will pay CB Anthony Henry a signing bonus of $10 million, as he recently agreed to terms with the club. Complete financial details were undisclosed.

Fontaine wrote yesterday:
I don't think we'll be able to afford him. He (Henry) could command around $10million or more just to sign, since smooty won't settle for anything less than $15 and will probably get it.

I'm not right that often, but when it happens I luv it!

I think Denver is doing OK.

Teams with cap space and losing records will obviously do much more to secure top flight talent early on.

Let them.

Denver is probably three/four players away from getting the job done. Why overpay when we don't have the cap space.

The most crucial thing in my opinion is getting Pryce restructured. If the Broncos can somehow convince him to do that given any team that trades for him will do likewise then what's the harm in having our best DL back and paying him his due?

With Pryce/Warren/Ellis Johnson/Pope/Fatguy/Palepoi/Coleman we'll have a decent DL.

Another thing, I know I said earlier we should resign Gold and move him to S because Kennedy is as good as gone.

But f**k this assclown. He only wants to sign as a weakside LB to make plays. He probably wants to sign a one year deal to make big plays at WLB instead of working hard to cover TEs at the strong side.

Well screw it. If he doesn't want coverage responsibilities then how's he going to move to S where the pay is much less. Piss off Gold.

Shanahan & Sundquist, along with others have been planning this off-season since last summer with a pretty good idea of what was going to transpire.

Sorry Wabbit, but I have to disagree.

This is not a plan at all. This is sloppy, fly by the seat of their pants, planning. Warren was never in teh original plan. Reggie was the plan has of two weeks ago. The 3-4 idea was to get Pat Williams and a solid big DE. Also Pyrce was to be traded by now (they said not me). They thought Pryce would re-work his deal, he didn't.

When your division rival brings in Moss and a decent RB in Jordan and all you do is trade a pick (which leaves you with 4 total) for a DT with 1 year on his contract and attempt to resign a weakside LB (when you have a young stud there already) that is small. At the same time lose a 10 sack DE, while every other DE/DT is being signed in front of your face. That's bad planning.

As a fan I'm angry. As a person that had some info a few weeks ago on the original plan I'm sick. This team got blind sided by the rest of the league. This team has failed in the early part of the offseason. Failing to tag any compensation to Hayward. Falling to move the big contract of Pryce, failing to see the real market value of Trevor and basically put themselve in a corner to have to move him!

This team had a plan. It was not to go like it did. With a weak draft teams decided to make the free agent signign period priority #1. Denver, with less picks in a weak draft, assumed two weeks ago that they could resign Hayward, and get a big man at DT and an decent OG. All they got was a big man at DT and it cost them a pick.

This isn't plan "A" right now the Broncos are looking at plan "B" and "C". Any signing in June are leftovers and castoffs. Yes they are important, but this team needed to make a move with long term (future) results. Warren while big man will be a UFA in 06. If he has a big year his price will be huge and Denver will be in the same position and next year as it is this year.

This is a bad plan.

I admire most your takes HEAV but most of us have no friggin' idea how, when, where, what happens in free agency. Denver has very little money under the cap. They should have done more to get relief with Pryce's cap charge because they knew about it since the start of free agency last year.

Getting Pat Williams etc and all may have been a decent plan but that counts for sh*t when other teams like the Vikings have $20 or so million under the cap.

This is a make or break season for coach. If he doesn't get it done he's in trouble.

Just the bumbling way they have gone threw this, so far, scares me.

But, since the superbowls, the plan is a new plan every year to free up max cap space for the coming season to add crappy ass attitude assholes to fit in holes with no regard to the following seasons. However, shanny isn't to blame for sonic wanting a new deal - and I think we'll be just as happy with tacobell - or Pryce catching a bad back.

Sorry Wabbit I like most of your takes and know you come up with good info most of the time but Heavy is correct. What we are seeing so far could not possibly have been the "master Plan" no way no how. And if it was then someone needs to go. The biggest "rumored" bidder for Pryce was the cowgirls they have made alot of moves and spent some serious cash already that deal is over (I would think). So far 1)we have a worse Dline then last year 2) Pryce's value has obviouly gone to crap 3) Most of the Dlineman that were out there that could have helped are gone 4) The draft is weak at best and even if we get one of the better dlineman in the draft how many rookie dlman are great or even good their first couple of years?

Now we start hearing that the tard Gold may get 8 mil signing bonus while Hayward slips out the back door that will piss me off more then any Bronco move in history. That just cant be correct but if it is I may join the "fire everyone bandwagon".

Never said there was any Master Plan folks...just saying the Bronco staff have been planning what they're going to do for some time now...if things pan out perfectly, great, but they never do, and a great deal of latitude must always be built into any strategy.

It is confusing, but when I read that we should sign Trotter, Rolle & Smoot & how about Doublas, and Pryce for Taylor...I have to wonder where the knowledge stops among some fans & delusion sets in.

Denver can't do everything, even if the cap room WERE there.

Shanahan/Sundquist knew there would be pleasant & unpleasant surprises. They know the market is limited for a 10-million-dollar DE, but fans expect a BIG payback because of his skill level.

They KNOW Gerard Warren was a bust in Cleveland & will be no savior here.

They KNOW Gold is chancy and maybe only a rental.

It's all that way ALL the time...everyone does it...some succeed, some don't.

It plays out & you win or you leave...it's a gamble every year, in every move you make.

Coaches come & go, and that's why...you pays the money & you takes your chances...that's all you can do.

Boy, I would be having one also if that is truly the case....That much money for a guy who busted in TB at a position of strength...That would sure seem brain dead. However, I had not seen that number anywhere else. I would be shocked if he got 1/3rd of that in a signing bonus.

signing bonus is just that. he's young, he's healthy, and we probably offered him something similar last year, before his big head and dumb new agents talked him into a big meaningless contract that he'd never see a dime from.

maybe he's learned his lesson. I tell you one thing, I won't mind having his speed on the field again. we need some meat at LB, but speed kills. and if we're running a zone-blitz, we need fast LB's that can line-up anywhere, blow around the line, and blast the QB. Gold was good for plenty of that, when used right. all of a sudden everybody thinks he's a NFL Europe player because he's not DE sized.

we got a solid DT. Gerard is right up there with Pryce on potential and talent level. if we can work him into a contract extension with incentives, he might be a HOF'er for us. but that's not good enough? that's the best spent 4th-round pick I've ever seen.

you want to overpay for a DE? do you think Hayward (a one-dimensional player that got a lot of help from our scheme, just like Berry) is worth $12-mill? or whatever he got. he found a team & situation he liked, he gets to be a part of an incredible defense in JAX, on an up-and-coming squad. maybe he left because he wanted to move to Florida instead of the mountains...

and we can't get guys if they don't want to come here.

there has been ONE DAY of free agency. we traded a 4th-rd. pick for a potential franchise DT who'll cost us 2-mill. we still have the rights to Pryce, and we'll either get a pick out of them, or get him at a fair-market-value deal in a restructure, when the big guy realizes nobody else wants him. we'll get Okafor, who'll be just as good as Hayward & Berry, another pass-rush specialist who needs help and can't do much else, and we'll get him alot cheaper than Reggie & Bert would cost.

we've got the secondary we need. we can get by with Fergie & Lynch, Kennedy helps, and our corners should stay about the same. we've got the LB's we need. funny that we're already writing off Pierce as a bust because he wasn't ready to start as a rookie over the captain of our defense.

trust me. the front office is working. they aren't playing golf or watching cartoons. they're making calls, and they're finding guys who'll make this team better, that aren't really over-valued. they have a limited amount of money to spend and a lot of areas on the team to address. and the options are numerous when you're trying to deal a guy like Pryce, anything can happen. we could get another Bailey deal, or make moves in the draft, or re-do his contract.

it's EARLY. calm the hell down. start complaining in July if you think we really are going to suck because somebody STOLE a free agent.

of all these guys we 'want' that signed elsewhere, who do you think was worth what they got and would have worked well on our team?

I'd rather have GW for $2-mill than Pat Williams for $6/per.

Hows about

DE Pollack
DT Fatty
DE Okreafer

OLB Ian overpaid whiny self serving Gold
ILB Wilson
ILB Pierce
OLB DJ

in today's NFL the broncos need 290 plus DE in one of the many articles on hayward he said the broncos wanted to use him in coverage more. He barked at it saying he is a pass rusher didn't want to be used in coverage more or less.

I tried to talk with Pat Saunders this morning, but can't get through.

I have no idea how legit that is, and i have work to do this afternoon UN football related, so you folks will learn more about it before I get anything.

Yes, it seems silly & excessive

Man wabbit i cant take it much longer man,
according to the DPO, it seems DJ will be moving to the strongside. I just lost alot of respect for Shanny. And to top it off, we are all hearing this 8-10 million bonus talk for ****ing gold. I have an idea, if we are so into spending money away from our weaknesses and misusing players, why dont we have DJ play only special teams and rip up Pierce's contract and give him a 15 million bonus!

bendog
03-03-2005, 10:55 AM
Forget Heyward. I don't care. I'd rather Den locked him up two years ago, but that's water under the bridge. But 8-10 mil in bonus will get a decent two gap DT, like Williams who just signed with dullass for 6 mil, to go with Big Ass who fancies himslef a one gap guy. OR, 10-12 mil might get an impact DT to go along with Big Ass's unmotivated ass.

Instead, they bring in Gold and move DJ? That better not be "the plan." Shanny can mow his own frigging lawn, and I'll spend the $200 bucks on something else.

DBroncos4life
03-03-2005, 10:57 AM
signing bonus is just that. he's young, he's healthy, and we probably offered him something similar last year, before his big head and dumb new agents talked him into a big meaningless contract that he'd never see a dime from.

maybe he's learned his lesson.

First off Hayward got 5 mill a year a far cry from 12 that you are talking about. Second we have tried this SPEED at LB spot for number of years and I'll have to tell you ITS NOT WORKING! Reggie was far from being just a pass rusher. In fact if you go look over the totals of our Dline in tackles you will see that Haywards totals will be a high for the last 3 ****ing years. He had 49 last year second along the line had 20 something! Give me a break Hayward is worth more then Gold ever will be.

Pollack only weighed in at like 265 lbs right? He'd get housed as a 3-4 end lining head up on a tackle. Lard assed Warren Sapp was having trouble holding his ground as a 2 gap end. Pollack would be a speedbump in a 3-4 as a DE.

I thought Leonardo Carson was one of the biggest bargain DTs on the free agent market and he's going back to Dallas for a dirt cheap, one year contract

FROM ESPN

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2004103

Dallas Cowboys: Unrestricted free agent defensive tackle Leonardo Carson, who started a career-high 15 games in 2004, has re-signed with the Cowboys. Carson received a one-year, $1 million contract.

A five-year veteran, Carson spent the first 3½ seasons of his career with the Chargers but was released midway through the 2003 campaign, and signed with the Cowboys. Carson is a tough inside player against the run, a player most effective in a time-sharing or backup role, and a veteran who adds depth.

He posted 43 tackles and one-half sack in 2004. For his career, Carson has 129 tackles, 8½ sacks and four fumble recoveries. He has played in 64 games with 34 starts. With the Cowboys set to switch to a 3-4 front in 2005, Carson likely will be a backup.

well, my original wish was that Pryce would be ok and renegot, and we'd add some guy like Okeafer and keep Heyward for the rotation between the two. Adding Big Ass in the middle is good, but falawful is just a two gap hold-the-guys-off-of-Wilson body.

they hybrid defense is great in concept, but you need 3 two gap DTs with a couple more jouneymen for the rotation (okeafer not) and 2 tweeners who can rush or play zone.

Gold doesn't fit that, nor will Big Ass play NT.

So, maybe they look to Jax, where the fatties collapse the middle (which is a great way to stop the 5 step, and personally the way I'd go instead of the NE model) ... but then Den would've gone for Ferguson or another DT. The ones we have just don't have the strength.

So Gold doesn't fit.

They could have two fatties hold the center of the field, two upfield rush guys at DE, and add Gold for more coverage ... hoping that the DE's could get enough pressure to keep manning or brady from picking the zone to death. But, Gold behind Okeafer..... I'd run it right at em, if I was Oak or KC or SD.

Question why are you so upset with Denver. We have been doing dumb moves waiting for garbage in FA for last several years. I honestly expected this kind of offseason by the present day Broncos. Denver blew too much money on lousy players. I am frustrated deep down too but, I figure unless Mike moves on this is the product we will get here. Unless we move or restructure Pryce we will not do much in FA.

DeMulling is #1 on my list too of all the FAs that are likely to sign with the Broncos. I thought he was the best offensive lineman on the Colts this year. He's mobile and it would be nice to put a dent in the Colts' fort up front.

Bendog made a great point though. Denver rarely invests a lot in an offensive lineman aside from the Tony Jones for a 2nd round pick trade and the 1st round selection of George Foster.

They have never put much investment into an interior lineman.

and how do you plan on addressing the d-line then since everybody else is gone?

Until I have some type of idea what they are trying to accomplish, i don't have a clue who we should target. Broncos Officially Acquire Warren
Fourth-Rounder Sent to Browns for Former No. 3 Pick
By Andrew Mason
DenverBroncos.com

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Gerard Warren is officially a Bronco.

Thursday, the Broncos and Browns confirmed the deal which had been the subject of much public speculation in recent days.

The Broncos sent a fourth-round draft pick in April's NFL Draft to Cleveland in exchange for Warren, whom the Browns drafted with the No. 3 overall pick in 2001.

The trade reunites Warren with his position coach of the past two seasons, Andre Patterson, who joined the Broncos' staff in February to work with the defensive front.

"He has matured in a bunch of ways over the two years that I was coaching him," Patterson said. "Hopefully here it can go all the way. I think with the veteran leadership we have in the locker room down here, with Coach Shanahan as the head coach and me and Jacob Burney being here, I think that's a good support system for him."

Warren started 59 of 60 games in which he played for the Browns over the past four seasons, including 13 contests last year. He missed three games last fall with a strained pectoral muscle; those were the first injury-caused absences of his professional career.

He notched 16.5 sacks, amassed 247 total tackles and 114 quarterback pressures for the Browns. Nine and a half of his sacks came during the last two years, and he also set a career high last autumn with three forced fumbles after causing two fumbles in the first three seasons of his career.

"He's excited about the possibility of being able to be here," Patterson said. "He knows what this organization is all about."

Gerrard Warren traded from Browns to Broncos
John Clayton's analysis: for Broncos; for Browns.
The move: DT Gerard Warren traded from the Cleveland Browns to the Denver Broncos for a fourth-round pick.

The upside
Broncos: The Broncos acquired an aggressive, nasty defensive tackle who was the No. 3 overall pickin the 2001 draft. Warren has underachieved in the past couple of years, but he is a talent. At 325 pounds, he has the size to be a nose tackle. He has the athletic ability to dominated. Mike Shanahan is hoping to rekindle his career in the Mile High City as the Broncos shift to a 3-4.
Browns: They tired of Warren, who had more bark than bite. With Romeo Crennel now in charge, the Browns are looking for overachievers. This isn't to say Warren can't do well in Denver. He has the talent. To not get a pick in the first day of the draft for a player taken that high is an admission that Warren was a bust with the Browns. Phil Savage is trying to stock pile picks in the draft and that's a good thing.

The downside
Broncos: They have been burned before by making bold moves on players who haven't worked out on other teams or have had some difficulties. Dale Carter and Daryl Gardener are just a couple of the examples. In some ways, you wonder what's going on along the Broncos' defensive line. The Broncos cry for pass-rushers, but they let ends Bertrand Berry and Reggie Hayward go. They are trying to trade their best defensive lineman, Trevor Pryce. Puzzling.
Browns: This isn't a great fourth-round selection, not being toward the top of the round. All the Browns can hope is to get a project for the offensive line or maybe a player who can help out on special teams.

Clayton's take: The Browns probably needed to move Warren because Courtney Brown is untradable because of his high cap number and history of injuries. Call this one a wash. The Broncos have the better chance of succeeding because they are getting a quality talent who is still young

Say what you want about Clayton, but he hits the nail on the head. What the hell are the Broncos thinking letting Pryce and Hayward go? Berry was let go because the Broncos couldn't match the Card's up front money, ok, fine, I'll buy that.

But letting Pryce go when his trade value is at its all time lowest is stupid. Letting Hayward walk without trying to at least LOOK like they are trying to keep him is assinine.

The Broncos better keep Pryce. If they let him walk for a third round pick, I'll puke...

Not so fast, #23 Travis Johnson, #25 Matt Roth, and #56 Alex Smith (TE) or Kevin Everitt. That would give you a 4-3 line of Matt Roth, Travis Johnson, Gerrard Warren, and Okeafor perhaps. That isn't a great line, but it IS an upgrade over last years. We would still have a good rotation with Fati, Pope, Davis, Johnson, Coleman, and Holland perhaps. I could certainly live with that.

As for Jeb leaving, I hope the Broncos strongly consider keeping Jeb. I have to admit though, I'm not sure he is worth matching. It just sucks to see a guy that we've pulled for, for the past couple/few years, finally he gets some playing time and then gets a good deal...... mainly b/c the Broncos nutured him and developed him into a decent TE. If he goes then I'm starting to lean more and more toward drafting a TE in the first or second round. If you could prove to me that Matt Jones or Vincent Jackson could come in and make a smooth transition to TE I'd say jump on them in the 2nd!

I guarantee Matt Jones is one of the top 50 football players in this draft. I don't think we will have a shot at him in the 2nd after his receiver workouts later this month. If he's still there in the 2nd, get him. He can excel at TE.

Gary Baxter-6 years/30 mill/ 10.5 mil signing bonus... good deal for a 6'2" 215 corner who can do it all, and do it all well. Finished 3rd on team in tackles the past two seasons and 2nd in '02. Great deal if you ask me... plus it eliminates the rumors of Ty Law comin to town.

Holliday agrees to deal with Dolphins

By Alex Marvez

The Dolphins added potential starters at defensive end and safety Friday and moved closer to a restructured contract with linebacker Junior Seau.

Ex-Kansas City defensive end Vonnie Holliday agreed to terms on a two-year contract, and safety Travares Tillman was signed to a two-year deal. Financial terms were not immediately available.

As for Seau, the Dolphins are expected to finalize an agreement next week that will lower his 2005 salary-cap number of $4.3 million. Seau is slated to earn $3 million this season with a roster bonus of $500,000, which is considered too pricy for a 36-year-old veteran who is projected to assume more of a part-time role in 2005.

Kansas City signed Holliday to a five-year, $21.3 million contract in 2002 after five seasons in Green Bay, which had made him a first-round draft choice in 1998. But Holliday, 29, never made the impact Kansas City had hoped, leading to his recent release for cap reasons.

It's unknown how the Holliday acquisition will affect the Dolphins' pursuit of defensive ends Kevin Carter, Bobby Hamilton and Tony Bryant. The Trenton Times reported Friday that Philadelphia defensive end Derrick Burgess is scheduled to meet Tuesday with the Dolphins.

The Dolphins are hoping Tillman can live up to the promise he has yet to fulfill as a 2000 second-round draft pick by Buffalo. Tillman spent a year out of football after being released by the Bills in the 2002 preseason. He returned with Houston in 2003 and made the roster before being waived and subsequently claimed by Carolina.

Tillman failed to win a starting spot with the Panthers and appeared in only six games last season before going on injured reserve with a broken forearm. Tillman will have the chance to earn a starting spot with 2004 starters Arturo Freeman and Sammy Knight not expected to return.

Knight, who started for the Dolphins the past two years at strong safety, has a free-agent visit scheduled next week to Kansas City.

Seau had double-digit tackles in five of the Dolphins' first eight games last season before landing on injured reserve with a torn pectoral muscle.

The Dolphins also visited with Atlanta free-agent linebacker Matt Stewart.

Another DE target (cheap one) bites the dust! Also a 3-4 guy older but still better than the current roster.

2 dollars because that's all the cap room we got after signing that midget linebacker to a cap breaking deal.

With them doing that and not getting anything for Pryce this could be the worst offseason ever. Shanny and Sunquist are a bunch of idiots running around scared with no plan whatsoever.
