Money reportedly available to staff, Barnett
Associated Press

DENVER -- A grand jury investigating the University of Colorado recruiting scandal uncovered a "slush fund" financed by coach Gary Barnett's Football Technique School, according to a report obtained Monday by The Denver Post and KUSA-TV.

Money was kept in "16 or 17" cash boxes, with each managed by a different person with little oversight, the Post reported.

CU director of football operations David Hansburg "told the grand jury that up to $2,500 could be missing, but not missed," the report says. "All funds were available to employees of the football program" and "all funds were available to coach Barnett to use in his discretion."

Barnett told the grand jury that "the school received only income from the registration fees of [football camp] participants," the report says.

The grand jury, which finished meeting Aug. 19, handed up just one indictment accusing former football recruiting aide Nathan Maxcey of soliciting for a prostitute for himself. Former call girl Pasha Cowan has said Maxcey paid her $2,500 for three call girls to visit "very young, very athletic men" at Boulder-area hotels, though Maxcey has said any solicitation was for him.

The report concurred with an independent commission's finding last year that players used sex, alcohol and marijuana as recruiting tools without the football staff encouraging or sanctioning it.

But the report said, officials' denial of knowledge about the practices "demonstrates either conscious disregard of these circumstances or a lack of oversight of recruiting practices."

In a statement provided by the CU athletic department, Barnett said: "I am sure there are things I'd like to refute, but since this has to do directly with the grand jury investigation, I am bound by law that I would not discuss my testimony or anything that was discussed by or included in the grand jury report."

Hansburg also declined comment, citing state grand jury secrecy rules.

The report said Barnett and Hansburg gave conflicting explanations of the team's finances.

this thread should be entertaining. Can you imagine if this happened in Gainesville? It would be swept under the rug quicker than you can say Crowder.

Well, I haven't seen a camera crew on campus for a week or so. We were overdue.

This'll be fun. Barnett's gone if his foundation has a slush fund, maybe Bitsy can go too. All this **** goes down on her watch and she looks like a deer in the headlights with no idea how to stop anything.

It was pretty ironic that 200 profs came out yesterday to support Ward Churchill's right to free speech, when these same professors were surprisingly absent last year and wanted Barnett thrown under a bus.

I thought it was only Ohio State that cheated?

Damn you copy-cats!

Our favorite c***, (that is a term of endearment) Betsy must go. If she had any leadship skills, this issue, the Churchhill situation and the financial problems would have been resolved long ago.

I got my grad degree from CU and have attended games up there for the last 30 years, but at this point, I feel I should encourage my kids to go elsewhere and go back to attending AFA games.

Even this thread title is a copy-cat!

Besides cheating like Ohio State, now you're taking a line from Tennessee's fight song to use in the title.

Biting my Univerisites style I see ;)

A Nebraska fan started the thread.

Funny as hell seeing a NU fan criticize someone else for running a corrupt program though.

Care to show me where NU has ever had the NCAA come investigate how NU pays coaches, recruits players, or any other rule that CU has been busted for? Or are you just stuck on some bad players NU has had over the last 20 years? In fact of the two who has the NCAA put on probation?

I'm a UofA fan and don't really pay attention to CU. Or I should say I try not to pay attention to CU. It seems as if everytime I turn on my TV these days there is another CU scandal. It's not only taking over my local coverage but I'm seeing CU BS on Cnn more and more.

Nuggets4 WTF is going on in your town? I'm waiting for the day that A special report comes on my TV while I'm watching a Nuggets game and there will be an emergency buzzer sound and a message that says "The people's republic of Boulder/CU have declared war on the rest of Colorado and they have declared themselves an independent nation"

I'm fine with that. :D

It's a mess here. Part of me actually wouldn't mind us getting the death penalty just so we could get rid of this crap. Put all the money in the mens and women's basketball teams. Or even, gasp, academics. That said, I love CU football too much to deal with that possibility.

Hopefully, we move on without Barnett & Hoffman though.

Well there is plenty of scandal in my city of Aurora also. We just had our Chief of Police resign over some rape scandal. I don't know all the details but I guess they had every indication about some rapists and didn't follow up on the guy and he assaulted more women. Needless to say the Chief took the fall and more heads are supposed to roll.

Must be a CU alum.

Oh wait, you said he'll have repercussions he'll have to pay. Nevermind.
