February 23, 2005 - LOVELAND, CO – The Colorado Eagles clinched the first playoff spot in the Central Hockey League Wednesday night in a 6-1 rout over the Topeka Tarantulas. Six different Eagles scored goals in the lopsided affair, and the team was just 3:56 away from securing their 11th shutout of the season. The CHL-leading Eagles (36-7-6, 78 points) will continue their quest for home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs when they battle a team fighting for a playoff spot, the Oklahoma City Blazers.

The Eagles jumped out to an early lead when Mike Lephart fed Sean Robertson on a great backdoor pass just 46 seconds into the first period. Ryan Tobler added the other assist on the play. The Eagles kept up the pressure and had a handful of excellent scoring chances, but Topeka’s goaltender Dwayne Bateman made some remarkable saves to keep the Eagles from taking a big lead. It wasn’t until the final minute of the period that Colorado scored their second goal of the game, a power play goal. Ryan Tobler ripped a slap shot from the top of the point, and a camping Kevin McDonald tipped the puck from just outside the crease for his second goal of the year. The Eagles and Tarantulas were tied in shots at 14, but it was Colorado that took the 2-0 lead into the intermission.

Eagles left winger Ryan Tobler scored the only goal of the second period on a pass from Mike Lephart at the 2:48 mark. The goal was his 20th of the season. Tyler Hanchuck took the only penalty of the period for a hooking. It was one of only three minor penalties in the entire game. The six total minutes tied an Eagles franchise low for combined penalty minutes in a game. Colorado out shot the Tarantulas 12-8 in the period.

Colorado continued to poor it on in the third period getting goals from Karlis Zirnis, Riley Nelson, and Greg Pankewicz. The six goals marked the seventh time this season the Eagles have scored six or more goals at the Budweiser Events Center. Dallas Flaman of the Tarantulas scored the only goal for the Tarantulas with 3:56 remaining in the game. Had the Eagles been able to hold on to the shutout, they would have broken the CHL record for shutouts.

Colorado takes on a resurgent Oklahoma City Blazers team for two games this weekend at the Budweiser Events Center. Both Friday and Saturday night’s games will start at 7:05 p.m. and Saturday’s game is the final regular season game that will be televised on Altitude Sports & Entertainment.
