DJ dropped 3 possible interceptions during the year while Vilma was returning his for TD's - not a difficult decision. He does at least deserve the #2 spot.

I couldn't more pleased with DJ - man this guy is exciting! Who cursed our LB's with hands of stone??? Orangemane UNITE we have to find the source of the curse, release it, and damn those who did this to us!!!

DENVER -- When identifying the Denver Broncos' superlative defenders, the spotlight always seems to burn brightest on free safety John Lynch, cornerback Champ Bailey or linebacker Al Wilson. But an argument could be made that the unit's finest player is rookie weak-side linebacker D.J. Williams.

The 17th overall selection in last year's draft led the Broncos with 114 total tackles, five more than Wilson, a three-time Pro Bowl selection and defensive co-captain with Lynch.

But Williams is just looking to do his part when the Broncos play the Colts in Sunday's AFC wild-card playoff game at the RCA Dome.

"They picked me as a first-round pick and I'm just coming out here trying to contribute," said Williams, named the AFC Defensive Rookie of the Month on Wednesday.

Williams is a finalist for NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year along with New York Jets linebacker Jonathan Vilma, who played with Williams at Miami (Fla.). Vilma, drafted five spots ahead of Williams, had 107 total tackles.

"He's a guy who I hang around a lot and it would just mean he has bragging rights and he can throw it out there and there's nothing I can really say back," Williams said of the rookie honor, to be announced today.

"I've done pretty well this year and tied into the system and gradually progressed as the season went along."

"He's got speed and size," Broncos defensive coordinator Larry Coyer said. "This guy has got it all. . . . He's got all the God-given talent. He can think. There's nothing he doesn't have."

Smith a key to offense

Rod Smith has played 10 seasons and holds nearly every major Broncos record for receiving, including 712 receptions and 59 touchdown catches.

Smith has the respect of his teammates for not just being about the statistics. The two-time Pro Bowl player takes pride in his blocking and being a complete player.

"I don't try to pub(licize) myself up. I try to pub my team," said Smith, who was undrafted out of Missouri Southern State. "I'm about winning championships. That's what I want to be remembered for."

Smith won Super Bowl rings in 1999 and 1998.

"Some guys are going to have better numbers, and I respect that," he said. "I know my numbers can compare to a lot of people. I can feel proud in what I've done. And I know I'm nowhere close to be finished with what I'm going to accomplish."

Bailey gets All-Pro nod

Bailey was proud to learn Wednesday that he made The Associated Press All-Pro first team for the first time, as voted on by a nationwide panel of media.

"You compare yourself to the whole league and then they choose you among the top two or three corners, that's a good honor," said Bailey, who had three interceptions this season and was selected to his fifth consecutive Pro Bowl.

Dunta Robinson gets lit up like a pinball machine all year and run over flat as a pancake when he tries to go head up with Kyle Johnson. However, he gets six interceptions as a first round pick, so he gets a bunch of votes for ROY. Hell, Nathan Vasher of the Bears had a virtually identical season, but since he was a third rounder, most of the voters wouldn't even consider him.

If D.J. Williams played for the Jets and Vilma played for Denver and they had the same seasons they had this year, Williams would have won rookie of the year for the Jets.

Like I said yesterday Socal. I now hope this lights a fire in D.J. to play his best game of the year on national TV against the best offense in the league.

Many of these votes have been done for weeks. Much like the Heisman award. It's what you do early, not what you do late.

Still the Broncos have bigger things in mind.

Vilma top choice for defensive rookie

By ANDREA ADELSON, AP Sports Writer
January 7, 2005
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) -- Jonathan Vilma finished working out at the University of Miami one day last spring when he spotted fellow Hurricane alum Santana Moss.

Vilma rushed up to Moss and told him how much he wanted to play for the New York Jets. Little did Vilma know, the Jets wanted him, too. So they made him the No. 12 overall pick in the draft. Look at Vilma now.

A sensational debut season made him The Associated Press 2004 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. Vilma capped the regular season with a bang, returning an interception for a touchdown in a 32-29 overtime loss to the Rams.

Not bad for a player some skeptics said was too small to play middle linebacker in the NFL. Vilma always knew he would make an impact his first year. So did Moss, coach Herman Edwards and defensive coordinator Donnie Henderson.

``When we first drafted him, we knew we had a guy that had all the characteristics we were looking for,'' Henderson said. ``Leadership, passion for the game, the way he flew around and made plays. Obviously he's stepped up and took on the responsibility, and the opportunity has been good for him.''

Vilma, who earned 21 votes from a national panel of 48 writers and broadcasters who cover pro football, came into training camp ready to win a starting job as part of a revamped Jets linebacking corps. Though Henderson penciled in veteran Sam Cowart to start, Vilma competed hard for the job.

In Week 2, Cowart sprained his left knee. Instead of struggling in the middle, one of the toughest positions on the field because the player must make all the calls, Vilma stepped in as if he had been the starter for years.

Pro Bowl defensive end John Abraham said Vilma made everything look so easy.

``After watching him play, a lot of people say he is already a vet,'' Abraham said. ``He handled himself like a vet. He was far past his years when he came in here.''

That has plenty to do with his college background. Vilma is just the latest in a line of stellar linebackers from Miami, following Dan Morgan, Ray Lewis and Nate Webster, among others. He became a starter his sophomore year, though if it was up to his father, Fritz, Vilma never would have set foot on a football field.

Fritz Vilma always feared his son would get injured. But Jonathan kept nagging until his father finally said he could play in high school. Vilma joined the junior varsity team as a linebacker. In his first game, about 60 people filled the stands.

``It was just different because it was on a Wednesday on the practice field where the varsity practices,'' Jonathan Vilma recalled. ``I just wanted to show the varsity coaches that I could play.''

He definitely did that, becoming a starter on the varsity the following year at Coral Gables High, just down the road from Miami. Vilma knew he wanted to become a Hurricane. Moss knew it, too, because he heard plenty about him from Vilma's sister, who was in one of his classes at Miami.

``Everyone talked about him,'' said Moss, who was a senior when Vilma was a true freshman. ``When he came in and made play after play you always thought when he takes over this thing and learns it, he is going to be dominant. It's shown. When he came in I had no doubt in my mind he was going to be that type of player.''

Vilma had one of his best games against Arizona in November, making 10 tackles, with an interception and fumble recovery to stop two fourth-quarter drives. He finished the season second on the team with 116 tackles, two sacks, three interceptions, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

He also was the first Jets rookie to return an interception for a touchdown since Erik McMillan in 1988.

``When I first came here I told a lot of the media that I'd prepare and play as if I'm a starter,'' Vilma said. ``When I got my opportunity, I got my chance, so it was just a matter of getting the experience. I didn't have to change any of my ways or my habits.''

Houston cornerback Dunta Robinson was second with 12 votes, followed by Denver LB D.J. Williams with seven and Washington safety Sean Taylor with 3. Both Williams and Taylor also played at Miami.

Kansas City end Jared Allen got two votes. Receiving one each were Arizona LB Karlos Dansby, Chicago tackle Tommie Harris and Seattle safety Michael Boulware.

Vilma is the third Jet to win the award, following McMillan and end Hugh Douglas (1995). Last year's winner was Baltimore linebacker Terrell Suggs.

D.J. would have won if he palyed for another AFC West team (that really hurt to say) because he would've gotten 4 or 5 INT's instead of just 1 on a count of playing Jake and the Broncos twice.

But I still have faith that Jake will play well on Sunday, as he goes the Broncos go. Despite all of my jabs at Jake, I really want him to do well. I might change my tune if he minimzes his mistakes for at least a few games in a row. GO BRONCOS!

Opponents picked on Dunta Robinson for the first half of the year - sometimes he got burned but he made more big plays and less mistakes as the year went along. By the last month, teams were picking on Aaron Glenn instead. Secondly, Robinson was used in blitz situations near the end of the season and was extremely effective. He was robbed out of a "forced fumble" against the Colts but buried the Bears with a sack and a forced fumble that led to a TD.

Regardless of who won the ROY, I'd be happier with Robinson or Williams than Vilma.
