THE TOP 20
1. Bull Durham
(206 points) The dialogue is sharp and funny, the baseball sequences are accurate and the prevailing sexual tension triumphs throughout.
2. Rocky
(204 points) Rocky Balboa remains the lovable lughead of an underdog who will register with the everyman inside all of us.
3. Raging Bull
(172 points) A definitive movie about any sport has yet to be made, but this one comes closest. There's nothing formulaic or feel-good.
4. Hoosiers
(167 points) While "Rocky" shows what one individual can do in the face of overwhelming odds, "Hoosiers" is the ultimate parable for the underdog "team."
5. Slap Shot
(166 points) Paul Newman demonstrates how goofball sports movies ought to be done (this should be required viewing for Adam Sandler).
6. The Natural
(150 points) Authentic in the nostalgia that's in every adult heart -- the career, game, love, girl that got away; then turns up again, backlit.
7. Field of Dreams
(122 points) Just an odd and wonderful premise with baseball acting as a metaphor for so much more about life, and love, and passions.
8. Caddyshack
(121 points) Perhaps the funniest sports movie ever made, and 22 years later, it still ranks as definitely the most "quotable" sports film.
9. The Hustler
(113 points) Unbelievable acting, especially by Newman. The scene at the beginning, when he plays Gleason for the first time, is one of the best.
10. The Longest Yard
(109 points) One of the best things about sports is the sometimes obvious, sometimes subtle bird they flip at the establishment.
11. North Dallas Forty
(93 points) From the opening scene, when Nick Nolte struggles to get out of bed, we get an up-close look at the brutal world of pro football.
12. Jerry Maguire
(88 points) Somehow they managed to turn a movie about an agent into a statement against the greed and selfishness that has overrun professional sports.
13. Hoop Dreams
(82 points) The viewer develops more of an emotional attachment to the lead characters than in any other movie -- because you know they're real.
14. Breaking Away
(76 points) The scene where Dave rides to keep up with the truck is one of the two most inspiring training scenes in movie history.
15. White Men Can't Jump
(74 points) "The sun even shines on a dog's ass some days." The constant yammering of trash talk shines throughout this playground hoops saga.
16. The Bad News Bears
(70 points) The kids are ruthless, funny, honest and vulnerable. Which is to say, they're just like real kids.
17. Chariots of Fire
(70 points) Behold an intelligent dissection of what makes a championship athlete tick when it really isn't about the money.
18. Brian's Song
(67 points) A tearjerker that captures the ideal interracial relationship, even in a competitive situation, so rarely achieved.
19. Eight Men Out
(55 points) One of the great period-piece movies ... it brought 1919 alive. Like most of John Sayles' movies, it features tremendous ensemble acting.
20. When We Were Kings
(53 points) It has a wonderful beat and rhythm that sweeps you up into the film. And when Ali is the central figure, you can't possibly look away.

Those first two Bad News Bears movies are classics.....goes to show you how different the social mindset was back then and just how much we've regressed in that dept. as well....these movies would never fly today. You can pass on the Japanese one....the concept had run out of gas by then.

1 - The Pride of the Yankees
2 - Slap Shot
3 - Rocky
4 - The Longest Yard
5 - North Dallas Forty
6 - The Bad News Bears
7 - Eight Men Out
8 - Raging Bull
9 - Brian's Song
10 - White Men Can't Jump
The Pride of the Yankees was a great movie even though Gary Cooper couldn't swing a bat lefthanded (like Lou Gehrig), and could barely even swing one righthanded. They shot all the hitting scenes with Cooper wearing a backwards 4 and after every hit he would take off running towards third base. Afterwards they flipped the film so it all looked normal.

I guess its a matter of personal taste, Atlas.
I didn't care for Field of Dreams. Everything with Kevin Costner except Bull Durham and The Untouchables is **** and his wooden presence prevented those movies from being really good, too.
I thought Hoosiers flat out sucked. I didn't know high school kids were playing above the rim like Elgin Baylor back in the 50s.
The Natural was so bad I was embarrassed for everybody involved. I wish someone would have skulled Roy Hobbs with a fastball in the opening reel and spared me two hours of disgusted boredom.
I wouldn't watch Jerry ****ing Maguire if you paid me $1000. A feel good movie about a sports agent. Tom Cruise can suck my dick.

I saw it because it was filmed partially at the Highschool my sister went to in Ault, Colorado. Then when the highschool hotshot makes the bigtime the shots were done inside Moby Gym in Ft. Collins. Outside of wanting to see some local scenary there wasn't much purpose.

This is my list of favorite movies that I enjoy maybe not how they stand as far as how important they are to the movie industry.
1)For love of the Game - Greatest Sports movie and way better than the other 2 Costner movies though I will say there all good.
2)Jerry Magurie- Say what you will I never get tired of this movie.
3)Any Givin Sunday - So much in one movie ...you need to watch this more than twice to get all of it ....I was disappointed at the movies when I saw it live but I was wrong
4)Program- Love this movie
5)Varisty Blues - Fun movie with hot women .....what more can u ask for.
6)61 - I hate the yankees but respect the players and this movie is so good.
7)The Rookie - A movie that was based on a true story that didnt suck.
8)Field of Dreams- classic
9)Replacements - You can turn this on at any time and it will put me in a good mood.
10) Love and Basketball- Im not much for basket ball but this movie has enough story line to get away from the crap they call a sport.
11)Sandlot -
12)Happy Gilmore
13)Major league
14) Rocky - would be higher on the list but ive seen it way to may times .
15) Hoosiers
16)Wildcats
17)Junction Boys
18)Beyond the Mat ---whooooo smoke on that one
19)Longest Yard

I should probably give FOD another chance. Might not have seen it in the right frame of mind the first time. I think Keven Costner needs to just relax already. He wasn't a good enough ballplayer for the bigs and as an actor, he makes a great ballplayer.

The problem that I've run into (after living a life consumed by football) is that I've come to the conclusion that hockey is the greatest game God ever created man to play.
I had to include "Mystery, Alaska" simply because "Slapshot" is outdated. The game has changed too much to make that film relevant except to older guys who can remember those days.
I have another to add to the list:
"When We Were Champions." It's a documentary of the Rumble in the Jungle — A great, great film that proves that Ali was indeed The Greatest while it shows George Foreman as a perceived villian who recreated himself in defiance of the aphorism that there are no second acts in American lives.
See it. I promise you'll love it.

I don't know that Ali got what he deserved. He could have just accepted being in the army, fought some exhibitions, kept his title, and been the Greatest. Certainly we'd have gotten to see his prime, which he never reached because of the forced layoff. Ali did what his conscience required. The irony is that he still has more good will among muslims than any other American.
He was a jerk towards Frazier though. Frazier loaned him money to train to fight for the title that Frazier held. I liked Frazier's style of fighting, but other than against Smokin' Joe, I always routed for Ali.

I recommend Thomas Hauser's book on Ali. It contains interviews from over 200 different sources on Ali, some of them friends and admirers, some of them enemies and critics. I think it gives a fairly complete picture of the man.
Its true he was hard on Joe, but Ali will insist to this day that it was promotion and not personal. At least it started out that way until a genuine feud developed. People have a way of changing, too. Look at what a bastard George Foreman was his first time around. Now I can't think of many people in the fight game that are more well liked.

Reuters, London
The action was set for 0400, two or three hours before the African dawn.
That did not stop over 60,000 people crowding the Stade du 20 Mai for one of the landmark sporting occasions of the century.
When the Rumble in the Jungle was done, the battle lost and won, there was a torrential thunderstorm which flooded the stadium and cut TV communications.
But the outside world knew by then that Muhammad Ali had produced one of the most astonishing feats in boxing history to knock out the fearsome George Foreman and regain the world heavyweight title.
The venue was Kinshasa, in Zaire, now known as the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The date was October 30, 1974. The Thriller in Manila between Ali and Joe Frazier was another 11 months down the line.
The bizarre Kinshasa start-time was, of course, to cater for closed-circuit TV in the United States.
Thirty years on the victor, now 62, battles the ravages of Parkinson's Disease; the loser, at the age of 56, is, remarkably, contemplating fighting again.
All those years ago, titleholder Foreman was considered unbeatable with a 40-0 record including 37 knock-outs.
His eight previous bouts had ended in the first or second rounds and he was widely viewed as the heaviest puncher the sport had known.
Ali was Ali -- a PR dream, a walking quotes-bag, poet, and showman supreme. But last and not least he was a highly skilled fighter and tactician. A man who could take a punch although in later years his health was to pay a melancholy penalty.
The fight was largely put together by Don King, then a fledgling in the sport.
The purse was $10 million, split 50/50, with most of it coming from the Zaire government of President Mobutu, keen to raise the profile of his country.
Ali flew in with his costly 35-strong entourage a month in advance of the original scheduled date of September 25. A week before the big day Foreman cut an eye in training and the bout had to be put back.
More time for the wit and wisdom of Ali, caught and recalled in Thomas Hauser's book Muhammad Ali, His Life and Times.
"I got a punch for George. It's called the ghetto-whopper and the reason it's called that is because it's thrown in the ghetto at three in morning which is when me and George are gonna fight."
And the poetry:
"Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee
His hands can't hit what his eyes can't see
Now you see me, now you don't
George thinks he will, but I know he won't."
In fact, Foreman saw plenty of Ali, catching him hard and often but it was part of the strategy hit on by the challenger after the first round.
Apart from dancing on his feet, Ali was thinking on his feet.
The ring surface proved slow and Ali quickly concluded not even he could dance all night (or morning, as it was).
He decided instead to entrench by the ropes, duck and take the blows and tire his opponent out.
The blows came in, some so fierce even the battle-hardened at the ringside shuddered. But gradually they became slower and less punishing.
Ali taunted: "Hit harder. Show me something, George. That don't hurt. I thought you were supposed to be bad."
By round eight, Ali felt ready to emerge from the ropes where much of the fight has been conducted.
A fierce right-hander to the head and the "rope-a-dope" champion was down.
Had it been in the first round he would have got up. Mid-fight, like the pro he was, Foreman lay looking at his corner who signalled him to wait, regroup, clear his head -- and then rise.
But when the get-up call came and with the referee counting apace Foreman failed to make it.
The Rumble was over.
Foreman had been knocked down in other fights but got up to win. He now accepts Ali was too smart and even if he had risen he would have lost.
Ali had his title back. He was $5 million richer. He was more feted and famed than ever. People lined the soggy jungle roads as he returned to the compound in N'Sele where he had been for two months.
Then what?
Newsweek writer Pete Bonventre caught up in N'Sele with Ali about three hours after the fight and has told in Hauser's book how he found the champion sitting on a doorstep showing a magic trick to some children.
He wrote: "And it was hard to tell who was having a better time, Ali or the children. "I don't care what anyone says, there'll never be anyone like him again."

What about the Little Giants, all the Mighty Duck movies, or Angels in the Outfield? What were you thinking to leave those off the list.
Ok, I'll admit it, I love the Mighty Ducks movies. I'm a sucker for pretty much any movie that has to do with hockey.
Someone mentioned 61. I am not so much a baseball fan and don't know a whole lot about it, but I thought that was a great movie. Matter of fact, it even spiked my interest in the sport. Made me pretty partial to Barry Pepper as an actor too. I liked him in it, and I am anticipating him doing well in 3 too.

Ali's greatest poetic effort, recited before his stunning upset of Sonny Liston:
"Clay comes out to meet Liston
And Liston starts to retreat
If he goes back any further
He'll be in a ringside seat
Clay swings with a left
And Clay swings with a right
Look at young Cassius
As he carries the fight
Liston keeps backing
But there's not enough room
It's a matter of time
Till Clay lowers the boom
Now Clay swings with a right
What a beautiful swing
And the punch knocks the Bear
Clear out of the ring
Liston's still rising
The ref wears a frown
For he can't start counting
Till Sonny comes down
Now Liston disappears from view
The crowd is getting frantic
But our radar stations pick him up
He's over the Atlantic
Who would have thought
When they came to the fight
That they'd witness the launch
Of a human satellite?
Yes, the crowd did not dream
When they laid down their money
That they would see
A total eclipse of the Sonny!
I AM THE GREATEST!"

My favorite sports movie is Rocky.
Here are some of my favorite quotes from all 5 movies
"I want you" Apollo Creed
"I must break you" Ivan Drago
"If he dies, he dies." Ivan Drago
"You're gonna eat lightning and crap thunder." Mickey Goldmill
"I'm gonna beat ya like a dog, Balboa." Clubber Lang
"Yo Adriannnn, I did it." Rocky Balboa

Drago had the best lines. Clubber in a tv interview was asked for his prediction in the fight. He looked at the camera and said "P A I N"

The Super Bowl has been used as a backdrop in a few disaster type films. Two Minute Warning. Black Sunday. The Sum of All Fears.
I think it's funny when you look up sports movies they include stuff like In Search of Bobby Fischer. Guess The Big Lebowski can be thrown in as a bowling movie. How about Sea Biscuit? (I mean if Secretariat is an athlete, shouldn't animal movies count?)

So "Sudden death" is or isn't considered a sports movie? :)

If bowling is a sport, then I want to add a movie that has not been mentioned yet, at least I think not...

I had to include "Mystery, Alaska" simply because "Slapshot" is outdated. The game has changed too much to make that film relevant except to older guys who can remember those days.
Where's that BS smilie??....oh yeah, here it is :bs:

Wheres the love for 'For Love of the Game" a Sam Raimi classic. Sappy love scenes but the baseball stuff was pure magic.
and another Costner/Ron Shelton classic: Tin Cup, one of the best golf movies ever.
Rep for Tin Cup..
every person who has every played golf knows exactly what he's feeling like when he keeps trying to the perfect shot over the water. No one ever wants to lay up, its like saying, "you've beaten me."

Slapshot outdated? Please. That one's classic and always will be.
"Trade me right ****ing now!"
"Hey Hanrahan! She's a dyke! I know! I know!"
"Bleed all over 'em, let 'em know you're there."
"I'm listening to the ****ing song!!"
"Don't ever play Lady Of Spain again!"
"They brought their ****in' toys with 'em!" "Better playing with their toys than playing with themselves." "They're too dumb to play with themselves."
"I'm ****faced and that son of a bitch keeps playing me. If someone checks me into the boards I'm gonna piss all over myself."
Of course Slapshot 2 is easily one of the worst sports movies of all time, but I don't think it detracts from the original one bit.

I guess Happy Gilmore is a golf movie.
Where are all the Neckcar fans?? Days of thunder and Driven?? I think I liked Driven a little better but they were both horrible..IMO

I didn't even know there was a Slap Shot 2.
Unfortunately there is.
It came out within the last couple of years. The Hansons are in it and it seems as though they basically tried to recycle everything that was funny and good about the original and sell it again. Godawful.
Here's what would have to happen to get me to watch it again.

I'd probably have the same look on my face too. Same goes for Cabin Fever, The Blair Witch Project and anything starring Jennifer Love Hewitt.

Driven completely sucked ass. And Driven is for the open wheelers, anyhoo.
Days of Thunder was ok, but very unrealistic. You have to laugh if you are a NASCAR fan and they show Cruise bashing into the walls that hard at Daytona and the kinds of moves he is making without wiping himself off the face of the earth.

I hate to admit it, but I kinda like it....there's something very Ed Woodish about that film that makes it work for me.
You wanna talk about a bad film? Try on Caddyshack 2 for size.....Jackie Mason has to be the most unfunny comic alive.....not one funny thing in the whole film....not one.

Exactly! It was a very unconventional ending, but i loved it. It was still inspirational and stayed true to the sport.

He seems like a nice enough guy, but his level of comedy strikes me as more infantile than funny. Of course, humor is completely subjective.

I agree but really Burt Reynaolds starred in Smokey and the Bandit, Cannon Ball Run and Stroker Ace!! What can be more infantile than those???
If done properly I think Sandler can do at least as good as Reynolds did. Now if they cast his character like all the other Sandler Characters he has played well,, then it will suck!!

At least the remake of yard will be different for Sandler in that it'll be one of the very few movies he's in where he isn't living with his Mom or Grandma....Jack Nicholson isn't around to save the picture this time either....my bet is that it'll be quickly swept under the rug and forgotton.
