President George W Bush
Will President Bush be waving goodbye to despondent Democrats?
Canadian immigration officials said the number of US citizens visiting their website went up six-fold the day after the US election.

Their website, which on an average day has some 20,000 hits, was visited by 115,016 on Wednesday, Reuters news agency reported.

The figure dropped on Thursday but was still higher than normal, at 65,803.

There was speculation that Democrats fed up with George W Bush's win were thinking of moving over the border.

The idea of disgruntled Americans wishing to emigrate north across the border has amused Canadians.

One commentator, Thane Burnett, wrote a tongue-in-cheek guide to possible new citizens.

"As Canadians, you'll have to learn to embrace and use all the products and cultures of Americans, while bad-mouthing their way of life," he wrote in the Ottawa Sun newspaper.

Hundreds of Canadians have also signed up to a satirical website urging them to do their bit and marry an American.

"Open your heart, and your home. Marry an American," AFP news agency quotes www.marryanamerican.ca as saying.

"Legions of Canadians have already pledged to sacrifice their singlehood to save their southern neighbours from four more years of cowboy conservatism."

New high

"When we looked at the first day after the election... our website hit a new high, almost double the previous record high," said Immigration ministry spokeswoman Maria Iadinardi.

Canada has a large-scale immigration policy, and Ms Iadinardi said Canada would welcome all new applicants - whether they be Democrats or Republicans.

Gay couple in San Francisco
Canada may prove attractive to gay couples in the US
"Let's face it, we have a population of little over 32 million and we definitely need permanent residents to come to Canada," she was quoted by Reuters as saying.

But she said it would take about six months to find out if there had been an increase in applications.

"There is no unusual activity occurring at our visa missions (in the US). Having someone who intends to come to Canada is not the same as someone actually putting in an application," she said.

Canada could find itself attracting more gay couples from the US after a Saskatchewan court ruled in favour of homosexual marriages on Friday.

The prairie province joins five other provinces and one territory in Canada by declaring existing marriage laws discriminate against gay couples and are unconstitutional.

Earlier this week, 11 US states voted to ban gay marriage in referendums held on the same night as the election.

To anyone whom wishes to leave the US for another nation because Bush won...I say good riddance and to quote their canidate John Kerry " Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out"

I'm sure some have given it serious thought, but ya know what? They won't leave because their misery will follow them there and they'll never be happy because all they know is doom and gloom. these types of people are never satisfied.

Soon they'll be bitching about Canadian health care despite their singing it's virtues here in the US. And they'll lament the higher taxes they have to pay, forgetting that they want to raise everyone's taxes in the US vto pay for their social programs that NEVER work.

Nope, I think we're just going to have to listen to them bitch and moan even louder now.................

You get what you pay for. If its free, dont expect much ;)

Seriously, why would you leave because you disagree with who was elected fairly in our judicial system? Are you that far out of touch with the majority of America?

This saddens me. I dont want anyone to leave. The fact that these people who are entertaining thoughts seriously about it are wacko left wing nutjobs can only leave me hope that perhaps, LABF is one of them and on a less likely probability, canadian IPs cant access the Orangemane.

:sigh: One can dream right?

This is how good health care is in Canada. I have friends in the Detroit area. Their doctors have had an influx of canadians visiting their doctors. Yet it's 'free' in canada, yet theze people come across the border to get health care here. And Canadian doctors come to the states so they can actually earn a living.

Hmm...getting kinda frosty here.... gets damn cold here...even Beezlebub comes in and crashes on a electric blanket I have for him. He's starting to frost up...after his nightly catfight...he's got issues in the neighborhood...I thought I would like florida but the panhandle was so humid it was rediculous. It's literally unbearable 6 months of the year. It was more humid than Orlando.

One theory would be that all the rich folk were stashing their money abroad where Kerry could not get to it.

More likely, since Americans can now actually really own property in Mexico, it can be a damn good investment

Was it out of love that you had his retractable claws ripped out?

I had his nuts torn out so he could be a house cat. The claws I debated but they like to rip things up. He's been holding his own outside. This is a pretty wild cat, even if he likes to snooze next to a heating blanket, he likes to play outside. Last time I saw him outside, he was chasing some cat. I don't need the damn thing spraying around my house, or tearing up the furniture. If he wants to take his chances outside, I let him. I have a whole cat farm with about 30 cats on the practice squad. I don't want to get the checkbook out to get another after this one has been trained to be a badass tho. I take good care of my cat, he likes to run outside. In fact he's pretty spoiled but I let him have his little adventures. Why is this so important? DeClawing a cat is pretty normal. Takes awhile for their paws to heal, but it's not too traumatic. If he runs into a full Tom with full swords he might get in trouble, but he's in a safe hood. They are all Boxers not slashers. He's got his back claws to roll over and head out if he finds a real Tom.

He's faster than Darrius Watts....it's amazing actually. He's the wind. Getting cold tho, he will have to stay inside unless he hits the Mexican Riviera.

I don't know if they adjusted the property rules. I always thought you could own only 49 percent. Maybe Fox has that fixed.

Nope, it's a 100% ownership through the vehicle of a Bank Trust which is a Trust agreement that effectively gives the owner of the trust all the same rights of fee simple title such as we have in the US

You got that right! I was playing in a softball league and busted up my ankle. Went to the local hospital to get it checked out. Place was empty but it still took me over 2 hours to get it looked at. Health system sucks up here and it's only getting worse and costing us more tax dollars as time goes on.

I think it's awesome that people want to leave the country.....sometimes....you have to thin the roster.

Ironic thing here is that Canadians are leaving to go to the States to work in the health industry. Trained nurses and doctors get their education up here and then leave for the States cause they get better pay.

I was mostly concerned with how our exports to the US was facing more protectionist objections under the current free trade agreement. Lumber in BC, our beef is still banned(although there was one isolated case of mad cow, checks have been tightened and no other cases have appeared) and most other agriculture products, are being blocked from export into the US for one reason or another.

Most say that Kerry would have been worse in that matter but things haven't been clear sailing under the Bush regime either so far. I just hope that when our minority government falls apart, that we to will get a right winged party in power to help patch up relations between these two great countries.

I was in the wrong , but Igot into a shouting match with a Canadian over the canadian anthem here in Casper during a Rodeo ....... it was Petty , but I was pretty upset they played the Canadian national anthem first ....... Not that it meant much , but it was shortly after some Canadians booed the American flag during a Hockey game .......

Yeah that was during a Montreal/Boston series a couple years ago I think. I cheer for Montreal but I was so ashamed over what happened. But a few years before that, the very same fans were booing the Canadian anthem back when the Quebec seperation referendum was in full swing.

The American media keeps jawing about the States being a nation divided. You guys got nothing on us up here. Quebec keeps threatening and now Alberta and B.C. are making rumblings of seperation. We're the True North Strong and F'd up!
