I thought I'd start a non-gloating thread. I can talk about this now that the election is over.
During the '02 election cycle, I was a delegate to the Colorado Republican Convention in Colorado Springs. They had a person from the Elections division of the RNC come talk to us about why it was so close in 2000. He said that Democrats were able to keep it close in 2000 because they had better get out the vote efforts. Then they explained the 72-hour task force which would help in this manner.
The system was tried in three states: Missouri, Minnesota, and Colorado. I had the honor of working on the campaign. I walked precincts and others drove people to the polls. At each polling station we had sheets of paper that had all the registered Republicans names on them and we were highlighting them as they came in. In the last two hours of the election, we called all who had not come in. You'll recall that we won Senate Seats in all three of those states and thus control of the Senate as a whole. In most of those elections the polls were close, but the turnout resulted in 3-5% margins of victory in our favor (sound familiar).
There were some errors that we had polish up for this cycle, but this time they nationalized the system and the strong turnout you're seeing is a result of Republican efforts more than Democrat's. The 72-hour task force has done its job and made the Republican party a real force to be reckoned on election day.
