The Florida Gators have fired third-year football coach Ron Zook and his staff, ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit reported Monday.

Ron Zook and the Gators fell to 4-3 on Saturday.

Athletic director Jeremy Foley will meet with members of the team this afternoon and then announce that Zook and his staff will coach the team for the remainder of the season, Herbstreit reported.

The firing comes on the heels of the Gators' 38-31 loss Saturday to Mississippi State, the worst team in the SEC.

His teams haven't had the swagger of those under his predecessor Steve Spurrier, who lost only six home games in 12 years and won a national championship.

When asked about his future Sunday, Zook focused on next Saturday.

"I just have to worry about this next game right now," Zook said. "That's all I have any control over."

So...which guy by the name of Steve Spurrier do you think the Gators are gonna try to bring in after this season?

What a way to prepare for the #6 team in the country, Georgia, by none other than firing the entire coaching staff!

Losing to a team that lost to a I-AA team is definately an embarassment, and worth getting fired over.

I wonder if Shannahan is on the short list again?

Wth? do you announce this in the middle of the season? What's the pint if you aren't going to replace the guy right now?

SoCal - I am probably the only person in the world who is a fan of all three major schools in florida. I am also one of few who would love to see Spurrier back at Florida. He makes it fun because he is so unpredictable.

i agree Big Guy. I have studied football schemes for 5 years now and i have a spurrier playbook and i am very intrigued with his concepts in the sprint draw passing game. I do think he is a genius and i think the reason he failed in the league was that he relies alot of 7 step drop passes and his line couldnt protect that long all the time against league front fours. I do think he is a great coach though. The way he runs his downfield option routes reading the outside thirds of the field is really ahead of his time.

It is fun to watch. It is not the boring option football that we saw for so long in the college game. I always thought the opton, while effective, was football for simpletons. Where did you get the playbook?
