GOP Voter Drive Accused of Tossing Cards

In several battleground states across the country, a consulting firm funded by the Republican National Committee (news - web sites) has been accused of deceiving would-be voters and destroying Democratic voter registration cards.

Arizona-based Sproul & Associates is under investigation in Oregon and Nevada over claims that canvassers hired by the company were instructed to register only Republicans and to get rid of registration forms completed by Democrats.

"We treat these complaints very seriously," said Oregon Secretary of State Bill Bradbury. The Democratic office-holder said three complaints were filed with election officials throughout the state. He declined to provide details, citing the continuing investigation.

Substitute teacher Adam Banse wanted a summer job with flexible hours, so he signed up to knock on doors in suburban Minneapolis and register people to vote.
He quit after two hours. "They said if you bring back a bunch of Democratic cards, you'll be fired," Banse contends. "At that point, I said, `Whoa. Something's wrong here.'"

Nathan Sproul, a former head of Arizona's Republican Party and the state's Christian Coalition branch, denies any wrongdoing and accuses Democrats of making things up.

"This is all about making accusations," Sproul said Thursday. "They allege fraud where none exists and get the media to cover it."
Republican National Committee spokeswoman Heather Layman responded that her party accepts all voters, and she accused the Democratic Party of operating under this mandate: "If no sign of voter fraud exists, make it up, manipulate the media into covering baseless charges and spread fear."

Sproul declined to name the states in which his company conducted registration drives. His political consulting firm was founded last year and has received nearly $500,000 from the RNC since July, according to federal election records.

3 complaints in Oregon....about....something....suspicious no details are given by the Democratic office-holder.

One unverifiable complaint in Minnesota.

OK, so in your article in which you are clearly trying to determine fraud by the GOP, you produce two examples when you initially cited many instances. Of the two examples, one is from a Democractic governor in Oregon and the other a substitute teacher in Minneapolis who, by the way, offers up no actual proof of foul play, just a convenient accusation 11 days away from the election. Why does he wait 2 hours to quit if they told him this in the start? If they didnt tell him in the start, how did they tell him since he was going door to door? The context of the sentence "They said if you bring back a bunch of Democractic cards, you'll be fired" implies that he was at some office and went out, then decided to quit 2 hours later? And, if the GOP or anyone they hired were so insiduously doing such a very illegal act, were to actually be doing this, why would they risk exposure by hiring some guy whom they barely know (remember, he quit after 2 hours) and tell him dont bring back any democratic cards.

Former canvassers such as Banse have come forward in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Nevada and Oregon in the past two weeks alleging they were told to register only Republicans and to "walk away" from people who said they intended to vote for Democrat John Kerry (news - web sites).

Some said Democratic registration forms had been thrown out or ripped up.

It is illegal to tamper with voter registration cards, which are numbered and issued by local election officials. In some states, including Oregon, such acts are felonies.

Eric Russell of Las Vegas told The Associated Press that he watched a Sproul supervisor tear up eight to 10 registration forms completed by Democrats and managed to grab some of the shredded documents as evidence. State officials are investigating his claim.

Voters Outreach America, paid for by the Republican party, was in Nevada for the last several months registering voters. Workers for the group claim they were instructed to only sign up Republican voters or they wouldn't be paid. Two employees of VOA claim they personally witnessed managers of the company removing and destroying voter registration forms of those who signed up as Democrats.

Same old ****. They're just a lot more blatant this time around, and why not? It worked last time.

Have you ever considered the possibility that Democrats are being planted? It's not as far fetched as it might seem, actually pretty easy.

Some radical registers as a Republican, wears his suit and cuts off his pigtail, and then another insurgent proceeds to manage to recover "shreds of evidence".

It would be so easy it's literally funny.

It's almost as rich as Dan Rather and his "memos from the trash bin" that was so debunked they put Rather on the back burner.

One VOA manager, Jeannie Morgan, was given at least 4,050 registration forms by the Clark County Election Department. Of those, she returned about 2,400. No one knows what happened to the other 1,600-plus forms because there's no requirement that unused forms be returned.

Of the 2,400 registration forms that were turned in, 1,900 were from Republicans, with about 300 from Democrats. Numbers like that would be suspicious anywhere, but in a swing state like Nevada, they're completely out of whack. Larry Lomax of the Election Department agrees.

Still, who can blame the Republicans? They won the last election this way and they'll literally stop at nothing to win this one.

If democrats want to vote, maybe they should get out of their government housing, catch a city bus and get on over to the government voter registration offices and fill out a card instead of waiting for someone to show up on their doorstep to register them.

I see nothing wrong with Republicans selectively registering Republican voters. They shouldn't pretend to register democrats and then toss their registration cards, but I doubt that that is what's happening (with a few scattered exceptions perhaps).

I'd also guess that both sides are using the same tactics.

The democrats are currently engaged in a psyop campaign to cast doubt on the validity of the upcoming election. It's despicable.
