KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A bullet fired at the team bus hit Cleveland Indians pitcher Kyle Denney in the right calf as the team was traveling to Kansas City International Airport late Wednesday.

Denney was not seriously injured. The bullet did not go very deep and was immediately removed by Indians trainers. The right-hander was taken to a hospital, where he was expected to spend the night, club spokesman Bart Swain said.

The rest of the team was unharmed. The Indians arrived safely at the airport and boarded a plane bound for Minneapolis early Thursday morning.

"Unfortunately, the situation is what it is, but Kyle is doing very well," Swain told The Associated Press as the plane took off.

Swain told The Kansas City Star that the shot was fired into the passenger side of one of the Indians' two buses while it was on a ramp between Interstate 435 and I-70, grazing outfielder Ryan Ludwick.

"It went through his pants and then hit Denney," Swain told the newspaper. "At first, there was a little bit of panic. Once we realized Kyle was OK, fears were subsided."

Police spokesman Darin Snapp said the team arrived at the airport before calling police. Swain said the Indians waited because trainer Lonnie Soloff was able to dislodge the bullet.

Denney, who started Wednesday night's 5-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium, was expected to rejoin the Indians on Thursday in Minnesota, where Cleveland begins its final series of the season Friday.

Snapp said police had no suspects and did not know if the Indians players were the intended targets.

Telephone messages left for the Royals were not immediately returned.

Man, Baseball fans are going insane.

Do you think the shooter may have thought it was the Chiefs team bus? :~ohyah!:

We are going to see some unreal things in our lifetime.

It's only a matter of time before a player in killed on the field, by a Deniro type in "The Fan".

I pray it won't happen but I am not optimistic.

Okay, I might be able to understand this better if the Royals were in the midst of a run for the pennant, and the Indians just ruined the Royals chances are achieving that feat. But no, the Royals season was over about 2 weeks into the season. This game didn't matter, and the Royals are just throwing games by now so they can get a good draft pick next year, which the Chiefs might have to think about doing before too much longer. If the Chiefs play their cards right, maybe Rolle from Miami would be on the wishlist.

The ironic part of the whole deal is the guy that happened to get hit is somone that was called up on the 19th of sept and has 2 wins...both against the Royals.

My first response after reading the article was, "why did they wait to get to the airport before calling the police?" and then thinking it may have been one of the players own gun that went off accidently.

Who knows. I'll stick with my Chiefs theory. :~ohyah!:

Not that getting shot is funny, but what saved any serious damage was cheerleading boots!

I got this from the local news when they were taking about it, but apparently, as part of rookie hazing, the Indians vets had Denney dress in a USC cheerleaders uniform(where he went to school I believe), and it was those knee-high cheerleading go-go boots that helped deflect any serious bullet penetration.

A damn cheerleading outfit worn by a major league baseball player was the svior, unreal.

Be a shame to wait that long.

Just kidding.

I guess.

I would much prefer to see him exposed as a cheat and live out his life in what passes for disgrace these days.

Actually, Barry will probably live a shorter than normal span, but that will likely be as a result of his dabbling in pharmaceuticals. Alcoholism shortened his father's life.

We already saw an athlete suffer a life threatening assault when that creep in Germany knifed an 18 year old Monica Seles in the back.

Was only about a year or two ago that the Royals were involved in an onfield attack. A drunk and his son in Chicago attacked the Royals first base coach. They were later discovered to have had a pocket knife. I still remember them body slamming the old coach until the Royals all ran over and beat the sh*t out of him. By the end of the incident the attacker was the one the police has to save.
They say that security is better now, but the streaker at the Super Bowl proved it is far from perfect. KC is a bit of a joke now because of this shooting incident. If you can't beat 'em, shoot 'em! Team record 101 losses and counting!
