Thank God! Anyone else sleeping easier tonight? Shouldn't we be looking for REAL terrorists instead of folk-rock hippies that have embraced the teachings of Islam ???
Flight diverted after Cat Stevens found on watch list
Tuesday, September 21, 2004 Posted: 10:18 PM EDT (0218 GMT)
WASHINGTON (AP) -- A plane bound for Washington from London was diverted to Maine on Tuesday after passenger Yusuf Islam -- formerly known as pop singer Cat Stevens -- showed up on a U.S. watch list, federal officials said.
United Airlines Flight 919 had already taken off from London en route to Dulles International Airport when the match was made between the passenger and the watch list, said Nico Melendez, a spokesman for the Transportation Security Administration.
The plane was met by federal agents at Maine's Bangor International Airport around 3 p.m. ET, Melendez said.
Federal officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, identified the individual as Islam.
One official said Islam, 56, was identified by the Advanced Passenger Information System, which requires airlines to send passenger information to U.S. Customs and Border Protection's National Targeting Center.
TSA was then contacted and requested that the plane land at the nearest airport, the official said.
"He was interviewed and denied admission to the United States on national security grounds," said Homeland Security spokesman Dennis Murphy. He said the man would be put on the first available flight out of the country Wednesday.
Islam, who was born Stephen Georgiou, took Cat Stevens as a stage name and had a string of hits in the 1960s and '70s, including "Wild World" and "Morning Has Broken."
Last year he released two songs, including a re-recording of his '70s hit "Peace Train," to express his opposition to the U.S.-led war in Iraq.
He abandoned his music career in the late 1970s and changed his name after being persuaded by orthodox Muslim teachers that his lifestyle was forbidden by Islamic law. He later became a teacher and an advocate for his religion, founding a Muslim school in London in 1983.
Islam recently condemned the school seizure by militants in Beslan, Russia, earlier this month that left more than 300 dead, nearly half of them children.
In a statement on his Web site, he wrote, "Crimes against innocent bystanders taken hostage in any circumstance have no foundation whatsoever in the life of Islam and the model example of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him."

Except for Prince Bandar and the Saudis who bankrolled dubya's business ventures (while simultaneously funneling money to al Qaeda and Osama bin Laden) of course.

He wasn't shot on sight. Our security is tight, and he was on a watch list. Why, I don't really know.
I am just telling you his real name. Got a clue yet? My assumption is that he is a symathiser. I think it's odd, but hardly something that can't be dismissed, as hard as you libwits want to plant it as such.
You tell me. What do you know about "Cat Stevens" since he changed his name to Yusuf Islam. I would guess you know jack shiat just like me.

I'd certainly feel far less nervous if a dude in full Muslim attire wasn't riding the same plane I'm riding in.
They seem to be just a tad bit prone to acts of terrorism. Or hadn't you noticed?

the plane got here. I rather doubt Cat Stevens is much of a threat to the US, though he supposedly raised money for Hamas via his school in London. But, he also supported the death sentence for Rushdie over the Islamic Verses. We do have a right to deny entrance to people. Still, I'd think we'd be more informed and safe to have a free debate and let the Cat explain why he thinks the war was wrong and why he'd support killing Rushdie.
ps, that would be Satanic Verses, wouldn't it? I tried to read that and another Rushdie book, but I found it slow going.

Ten things NOT to say to Cat
How do muslim women made that ungodly sound with their tounges?
Can I buy your daughter a drink?
How about that Maggie Thatcher, huh?
Is that a pipebomb under your robe or do you think that Stew's as hot as I do?
Do you miss the groupies, or do you get as much action now?
So, are you like the Mormons?
I can see the robes, cause it's a bitch to try and fit in Levis anymore, isn't it?
First trip back in awhile?
Whatever happened to your career, dude?

Beezer is on the garage teasing the Vanilla Lab next door. Woof Woof Woof. I asked him to come down but he's having too much fun. I hope that dog never gets a taste of him.
No big deal to me...
He's supposedly done some under the table funding to fundamentatlist groups, so he's on the list -- makes sense to me he's on the watch list....
In the current state of terrorism in the world, better safe than sorry....

Hamsters have teeth. Gere's too sick. Aside from nipping my thumb occassionally, little girl dog's hamster Comet is a sweet harmless little thing. He's a "dwarf" and is in reality a dormouse.

hey, he's donated money to Hamas. He therefore is fair game. I'd deport him to Israel if it were up to me.
bendog

Well, Hamas has explicity NOT attacked outside of Isreal and the occupied territories. Maybe in Lebanon too, that that's mostly Nazralla's gig. AND, hamas was originally pushed by Israel itself as a counterweight to Arafat, who we all agree is an impediment, and hamas runs, or ran, social service type stuff in addition to its military aspect. We've supported terrorists in Afghan and Sudan because they were on "our" side. So, JR's distinction of "your with us or against us" seems overly simplistic.
But, prior to Iraq Ali was moving towards making a public statement against terror. If Cat would make one, I'd think he'd be more help than harm.

Hamas WAS a good political solution till Arafat had it dismantled when he percieved it as a threat. Araftat took it from a political organization to a terrorist organization.

Does anyone realize how stupid we look? We deny Cat Stevens entry at the same time Italy and Brit (and US) hostages are being beheaded. How's that for ineffectual? Making matters worse, most muslims would naturally feel that after Abdual Grab prison it's morally offensive for Christian soldiers to be detaining muslim women in a muslim country. So now we've allowed a frigging terrorist to make like a freedom fighter protecting the chastity of muslim women! Great Sparky

Poor choice of words, but UBL isn't anything than a mouthpiece at this point, and that mouthpiece has been effectively shut down with the exception of some pathetic audio tapes. To me, that means he is "increasingly irrelevant" and the fact of the matter is the mantle has effectively passed to Mr. Z and others.

Cat Stevens didn't donate money to hamas. Doesn't anyone ever research the story before they have an opinion?
Look, dude was a reborn muslim (along the lines of a reborn christian) he donated a bunch of money to some muslim charities, and one of them (wich ALOT of people who donated didn't know till recently) had ties to hamas. He admitted long ago he didn't know that and stopped giving them money LONG ago. The government put him on the watch list, he got detained because the US is full of parinoid freaks right about now. Dude didn't do anything wrong. He also donated a bunch of bank (at the same time) to many legit muslim charities.

Among the charities he has supported are children affected by war in Bosnia and Iraq (news - web sites) as well as victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks against America, which he condemned.
